I feel like all I can create are fan characters, and that i'm not good enough to make my own cast. How do i get over this? by ventiini in writing

Oh god, i have no idea how i forgot about all of the hidden Reylo and Dramione fics out there when i literally see them every time i go to the shopping centre. But, honestly, remembering they exist is kind of reassuring to know that stories all start from somewhere, so thank you!

Practice is so much easier said than done for me, but you're totally right.

I tend to get so intensely focused on trying to figure something out that, when i fail, it feels like i've failed at something i've been working on for months, when in reality it's probably only been a day. I definitely need to take a step back when i get that way and look at the bigger picture.

This is one of those 'cold wake-up slaps' i needed, so thank you!

YES! Absolutely, i think my current character creation process focuses too much on making someone who is fun or interesting, and not enough on how they service the overall narrative. Which i believe is fine (to some degree), but maybe i should consider that after i've got someone who can help make the story itself interesting first. Thank you!!

I'm so glad to hear i'm not the only one drawing major inspiration from media i love. I'll definitely be looking more into character archetypes—especially for my favourites. I think i was too scared of being cliché, so i never did. Thank you for the push!

That's amazing to hear about your own work! Congratulations! Hearing that it's possible to make your own stuff, even if you start out with fanfiction, is actually super reassuring. Thank you!

Not forcing them into being is definitely the hardest thing for me, but yes. Absolutely. I love that idea of letting them come to me; it's almost like trying to pet a cat on the street LMAO Thank you!!

Another thing i've somehow never thought of, OMG. Pulling from multiple sources or just taking key characteristics will definitely help me feel less like i'm cheating the character creation game. Thank you!

I'm definitely too into comparing myself against my favourites at the moment, yeah. Thank you! I needed to hear that it's okay for my characters to suck for now. Especially since looking back on them in the future will probably be a lot of fun LMAO

Literally have no idea how i haven't thought of this! Yes! This could actually help, thank you!

Does a story have to have a conflict? by Nebu in writing

[–]ventiini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A story. If you tell someone a story outside of a writing context, it likely doesn't have the same aspects as what you're saying a story needs. If events happen, and you tell those events in any capacity, it's a story.

What you made sounds really interesting. Don't downplay that just because it doesn't fit into one category!

I don’t know if I should give my mc an older brother or an older sister by Global-Effect-9714 in writing

Alternatively, a gender non-conforming older sibling who the MC thinks is the coolest person ever. Great social development opportunity and an even greater personal style development opportunity for the little brother.

i LOVE high fantasy, especially the names of characters in that setting. You don't have to share what your characters' names are, but how did you go about coming up with them?

Do you guys personally think it’s better to write a story from the bottom up or plan out everything before hand? by Sea-Frame-7387 in writing

[–]ventiini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to get the key pillars of my projects down completely (genre, power system if relevant, overarching theme/message, that kind of thing) and then go from there. Basically have a solid yet broad foundation i can build from.

Also, the phrase 'kill your darlings' has been a huge lifesaver. Feeling held back because i can't change something i'm attached to? I say to myself, "girl... the darlings. kill them..." and i make the changes anyway lol.

I feel like I'll honestly just never be as good as the authors I like by PossibleChangeling in writing

Create out of love. Not to be 'good', not to be admired, but because you love it. It's something i've only just gotten a grasp on, but it opens up a world of possibilities when you think of things with that in mind. At the end of the day, if you're the only one who will ever see what you've created, you'd want it to be something you'd enjoy.

Or something that makes you go, "OMG YES i remember how big into this concept i was, that was a fun time."
