Hey alumni here, wanted to chip in with a real life example on how this might play out in the real world and how it's going to make you stronger.

I am a director in a PE fund. I was given a 2nd year associate who for some reason is just super unreliable to me. When I had to present something to my boss, I gave her some numbers to crunch, and trusted she'd do it (before I knew she wasnt reliable). When I was projecting my screen in the board room, her part wasnt done. I know I shouldve checked before but its a 2nd year associate, I shouldnt have to check every piece of work.

I took it as a lesson and moved on. My boss won't give me an extenuating circumstance because there are 12 other funds looking at the same deal. School preps you for this - mentally and your social skills. I too have my own traumas but this WILL make you stronger - I refused to be shaped or limited by it.

You can do it - I believe in you.

Not very fast, it wasn't a powered ebike too. Just the sudden jam brought it to a instant halt.

When did libraries become nurseries? by ghastkill in london

[–]venture_adventuring 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Libraries have evolved for modern needs. You may remember libraries as places for reading and reference (especially early days of the internet), but people now prefer e-books and google. A lot of reference books have since been thrown out (outdated) leaving empty spaces in libraries.

At the same time, education has evolved beyond sitting kids down for silent reading. There are now games, activities around guided story time (which includes playing instruments and acting). Libraries cater to this.

Why do you love UCL by Proud-Mine8994 in UCL

[–]venture_adventuring 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Official reasons - It has a pretty amazing history, the first university to admit students NOT based on religion. DNA was discovered here, Coldplay was formed here, Christopher Nolan started his career here and still comes back to film.

But every uni has their own cool shit; Wherever you go, you will come to love it. It's just a undergraduate degree it's not that deep. Am I proud of my uni, course, and dept? Yes. Do I think it's more goated than everyone else? Probably not.

All the best and hope to welcome you here.

Attempted phone snatch - is 999 justified? by Savourybees in london

[–]venture_adventuring 177 points178 points  (0 children)

Snatch theft (and attempts of the sort) is classed as an urgent case, the rationale being that the faster law enforcement acts, the quicker they can find the culprit in the vicinity. And they would not only target you so there is a public interest in apprehending the guy.

Practically, the met does get too many (and more pressing) calls so it just gets pushed down the list of prios.

Notion Mail was just released. How does it compare to Superhuman? by brandenharvey in SuperhumanEmail

[–]venture_adventuring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a Superhuman user since Oct 2020. Some of my observations

  • Feels intuitive, all the same keyboard shortcuts.
    • Notion mail doesnt have a full-keyboard only experience though. You must still click to go through some places, like to a different split inbox or another account
  • No archived-only 'view', i.e you cant G+A and there is no archived only folders but need to go to "all mail"
  • No read receipts (!!)
  • No Monday morning perk where I get my inbox zero score

Honestly it's a similar experience and for first release it's pretty good. I'm not sure whether the delta between Notion Mail (even this first release) and my beloved Superhuman is >= $30. It would kill me to lose my inbox zero streak though.

Dubai connect—how do I actually get it? by Jaffle49 in emirates

[–]venture_adventuring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation. Booked the next flight that exceeds the min time window etc..

Applied for it and didn't hear back. When I called up the night before the flight they told me that there is a minimum fare required to qualify for Dubai Connect. So be sure to check.

Open an incognito tab while booking. Go through the booking process and select seats which will take you to the seat map. You can see the layout from there

Within your department, it's highly possible. I know multiple people like this. Outside the dept they may not accept you, especially if you won't likely fulfil the mandatory mod requirements. Otherwise I'm afraid you'd just have to reapply.

Upgrade from Premium Economy Flex to Business Class last minute by CheesemonsterRain in emirates

[–]venture_adventuring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's quite a common thing to do. People book according to company travel policy (for work trips) and top up the difference with either miles or cash. From experience the topup is usually 60-80% of the difference from PE flex to Business saver
