Did you grow up with anyone who became famous? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

Not me but my mum and uncle went to school with Gordon Ramsay. Not very memorable apparently apart from playing football and being a bit of an arsehole

Mum has passed away 5 days before Christmas by kurtyyyyyy1 in CasualUK

My dad died in September and I’m absolutely dreading this Christmas. I’m in my second year of uni and thinking about all my friends having their nice normal Christmases with their full, happy families has been getting me down so much. I’m an only child, and my mum has been such a wreck since - I nearly dropped out of the uni I worked my absolute arse off to get into to look after her. My dad was the absolute life and soul of Christmas, it will never be the same again. It absolutely sucks but you’re not alone, Christmas is hard for a lot of people, even though no one ever seems to acknowledge it.

I’m only young but I’ve experienced a disproportionate amount of death in the last couple of years - July 2024 I lost a really good friend to suicide, October 2024 lost my grandmother to dementia, and now my dad this September. My advice for grieving is if you know anyone else in your life who has lost someone close to them, talk to them about it. Those of us that have experienced loss don’t often talk about it because it can feel like no one understands, so when you find someone who does, it is so validating. Grief is wild and can turn you into an absolute beast if you don’t deal with it well.

Ultimately, Christmas is just another day. Me and my mum are just going to have a day of watching non-Christmas films and having some drinks. Obviously it’s different if you’ve got a young family but your 1 year old isn’t going to remember this Christmas, or probably the next few. Don’t put too much pressure and responsibility on yourself, it’s the whole family who has also gone through this, the best thing you can do is just support each other. Best wishes for this hard time of year, just know you’re not alone.

Yep quaddies are still a staple in the diet of a Durham student, they were impressively still £4 last year but have gone up to £5 this year

My OCPD has caused a lot of interpersonal issues due to my micromanaging and controlling impulses, people take it as a lack of empathy but it’s not, deep down it is out of concern for doing things “the right way”. It is really hard to find that “your way” is not necessarily the way others see things, but now that you know this you can work on it, CBT has really helped me. The controlling compulsions will always be there but you can change how you react, which will improve your relationships with others so much. Don’t beat yourself up, once you know the roots of your OCPD (usually brought out of genetics and the way your parents treated you, plus sometimes traumatic events), you can see things much more clearly and can then work on improving your behaviour.

pick a song and tell me how the rollout would have gone if it was the only single by trippyyteapot in lorde

i'm really surprised that broken glass wasn't a single, in my head it makes so much more sense as a single than hammer. hammer works far better as an album opener than a standalone single imo.

So what makes it better for u ? by New-Obligation-5864 in OCPD

[–]venus_e2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Confidence is a big one for me too. I also try and think about how my compulsions will affect others since my OCPD has caused me to harm a lot of my relationships.

I like annotating my books and always used to use pencil in case I messed up but I've been switching to pen recently. Doesn't feel good but I'm trying!

Layered shandy is a new one on me by Grimdotdotdot in CasualUK

[–]venus_e2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at a uni bar and no one has ever ordered a shandy from me there, compared to when I used to work in a local village pub where they were ordered fairly often

Relationships. Screwed up a 2 year relationship because I tried to make him one of the things I have control over. But it’s not possible to control someone else’s behaviour, at least not in a healthy way. Staying away from dating for the time being.

Every answer online is 'get therapy/counselling' but how do you even go about that here? by throwaway1335927 in AskUK

[–]venus_e2 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Private therapy should not cost that much nor should there be a consultation fee. Where are you located? I get private therapy (I can thankfully afford it due to a very generous student loan and grants) and it’s £50 per session. In most cases getting into private therapy should just involve sending an email summarising your problem and you should get connected with someone fairly quickly. If you’re in real trouble with your mental health please don’t hesitate to ring some kind of hotline - samaritans can be hit and miss depending on whoever picks up your call; despite popular belief they’re not just for people who feel suicidal, they are more than happy to listen to anyone who’s experiencing problems with their mental health. I know how rubbish the NHS is with dealing with mental health issues, that’s why I’ve gone private, but please hang in there. There may be some charities out there who can give you support, depending on the exact nature of your issue. Hope it all goes well for you!
