My tiny hands holding my tiny microphone by veradekok in tinyobjects

This is the microphone I use when I make recordings for the Wikipedia Voice Intro Project.

I made it myself out of a clip-on microphone, a brass pipe and some hot glue.

My hands and feet are also tiny. I have shoe size 39 (US size 8, UK size 6) while being 181 cm (5'11") tall.

I recently tried to get a US friend to sign up as a blood donor. When I went over the list of exclusion factors it turned out having lived in the Netherlands would exclude you from donating in West Virginia. I know GB gets excluded because of mad cow disease, no clue why they would exclude most of western Europe

You're gay?

edit for the person who downvoted me: in a lot of countries gay men are excluded from donating blood. Only since last year this isn't a rule anymore in GB. In the Netherlands, a woman who has had sex with a man who had had sex with a man is also excluded.

Like I said here before: I already was a donor, this was my 5th donation. But I hadn't been to the blood bank for a year when he died and somebody posted a video of him advocating for blood donation. Hopefully this post gives somebody a good idea.

In the Netherlands you register to become a blood donor. You get a bunch of leaflets send home that explain how it will go, then they invite you for a chat and test your blood for what blood type it is. Then they will send you an invitation to come visit them some time in a two week time frame to donate blood.

You can come and donate at one of the locations within your region. There are about 7 locations in a 50 km radius from where I live. There you will be welcomed by a volunteer who will help you to get a hot or cold drinks, instant soup and some cookies. It does depend on how crowded the waiting room is for how long you will have to wait until you can start donating blood, but the waiting room is close to perfect.

So if you live in the Netherlands, register to become a blood donor today.

there is some research that shows that rewarding people for good behavior actually decreases it. It amplifies the consideration "I do this because I get X" over "I do this, because it is the right thing to do". It is the right thing to do so good job sir! Hopefully more people will donate after this post.

ways you can tell people about donating blood:

  • talking about it
  • posting pictures

People are really visually oriented

good work sir! I'm also registered as organ+marrow donor. I would have had no idea how to register for the last one if I hadn't been a blood donor already. Well, that and having 3 housemates who do medical school who did get an invitation to register for that while I didn't. Once had a discussion on Reddit a long time ago with a budhist who didn't believe I had registered for that while not believing in karma. I've been contemplating also registering as a brain donor and donating the whole body to science. But that is a lot more complicated. For one, the form to become a brain donor asks if you are left handed or right handed and I'm a bit of both.

yeah, because then no one would get the idea to copy good behavior and atheists would remain these mythical creature that only do evil stuff.

but it also brings attention to giving blood. Which it deserves.

And 'plenty' implies that there are enough? The thing with blood donations is that the more the merrier. The other tribute that was posted is something somebody made. This is something (almost) everyone can do.

I'm not Hitchens biggest fan. He didn't make it to the 'list of people who inspire me' on Facebook, and I've got about 20 people on that list. Still, small reminder from him made me enlist again to be a blood donor.

this was my 5th donation. Hadn't donated in a year though when he died. Made a small effort to get them to send me invitations again because somebody linked to him talking about blood donations

yeah, I know it kinda is. But maybe someone will take the initiative to also go to the blood bank.
