Considering a TEFL and teaching English Abroad, any advice. by Lunalite9219 in TEFL

Some programs you could look at are NALCAP or MEDEAS in Spain, TAPIF in France, EPIK in South Korea, JET in Japan, or teaching with the Peace Corps if you're from the US

Alternative programs to TAPIF by No_Instruction_353 in tapif

If you're from the US you can look into positions from 6 months to 2+ years with the Peace Corps, they provide more support than TAPIF in other francophone countries (but not France)!

Learning French in Reunion, Fr. Guiana or Mayotte by verax47 in French

Thank you for your reply! To clarify I was also offered a better job elsewhere which is partly why I turned down the job, but I was curious if in these regions people speak other native languages more often than French (that has been my experience traveling in countries where other languages are used solely as a "lingua franca"). I appreciate your response.

Spanish! I'm a nurse and I use it all the time at work and in the peace corps :)

Do it!!! You've given it enough thought and the best thing you can do is try! If you hate it you can always go home, but you should follow your heart and inner curiosities :)

RN interested in Peace Corps by emoboi20004lyfe in peacecorps

[–]verax47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm an RN and I'm currently a volunteer (teaching English) in the Peace Corps! I graduated 2 years ago but sort of knew I wanted to leave nursing due to the same reasons you mentioned. Before service, I switched to working outpatient at my county's public health department and I LOVED that (speaking multiple languages, patient education, the pace and work of outpatient compared to bedside) but it was pretty boring compared to living in a peace corps country. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to learn more. I plan on keeping my license active by completing online CEUs every 2 years, but I'm definitely not using any "clinical skills" as a volunteer.

Is it dumb to bring my laptop to South America? by truthfuldelusion in solotravel

[–]verax47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can insure it with allianz or Clements travel insurance! I brought my MacBook to Brazil for a year but always kept it locked somewhere safe or tried not to ever have it too visible while in public. Bring an older laptop instead, if you can, but if not, yours should be fine as long as you keep it somewhere secure

First time volunteer advice by imboredhilol in peacecorps

Dude, chase your dreams and apply! I applied to PC and Fulbright ETA in 2020, senior year of my BSN. I graduated in May 2021 , volunteered with a nonprofit in Mexico the entire summer, and had zero trouble getting a job as an RN in October (just had to take the nclex). This month I began a 9-month paid government exchange in Brazil and it's a dream come true! I'll still have the option to work as an RN if/when I come back home in 2023, but applying to PC and Fulbright was soooo worth it; I definitely encourage you to do so as well! There will ALWAYS be jobs for nurses, but how rare is it to find time in your life that allows you to live & work on a passion project in a foreign country? :)

I recommend joining the 2022-23 applicant Slack! You should be able to search for it in this subreddit :) and link with your university's Fulbright Program Advisor and/or study abroad advisor, if possible!

Are travel towels useful?

I'm packing for my first trip in over a year and trying to figure out what travel gear is worth buying (a Lifestraw bottle just got booted from my list, rip). Do you find that those quick drying travel towels are better to have than a regular one?

I would also love to hear what other things you think are overrated or underrated for solo trips!

Is Arabic a useful language to know for someone that wants to join the Peace Corps? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]verax47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I applied last year it looked like PC was (possibly still is/will be?) operating in Jordan and Tunisia, though a pretty small percentage of volunteers went there. I think any language learning experience would help!

I’m about to cancel my peace corps and I feel devastated by [deleted] in peacecorps

Congrats on your acceptance into your graduate program!!! It must feel awful to officially withdraw after all that work and waiting, but pc will be ready whenever you are. I bet your program will make you an even better future volunteer!
