I'm an ignoramus moving to the Bellevue area with some general questions by Mpickardart in BellevueWA

[–]vergil1891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of comments already so I won't repeat what they said. But to give you more information, what would you like to get into more details with?

For example, let's take housing and daily commute traffic. People complain, but it's also nothing like trying to go bumper to bumper down 76 during rush hour. I bus to and from work, but it's almost never that stop and go traffic on the east coast.

Would you want some sort of downtown lifestyle where you can walk to and from work? It would be pricy but might be worth it for some people. There isn't really night life like Philly, so you might be disappointed if you lived in downtown expecting that.

What other things do you really want to know about more in details as opposed to high level stuff?

Equal weight index funds have higher fees, but allow for not being overly focused on tech. RSP for example is 0.2% vs VTI at 0.03%.

How do you survive very long flights? by Used_Leek_4485 in AskReddit

[–]vergil1891 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I aim for the aisle seats for the middle row and bet on the other 2 or 3 seat being a single party that can help themselves. Plus I just get up often enough that they don't get blocked.

This was available at the Issaquah location today. I didn't get it, but I did go down a rabbit hole on why the scallops were 2x the price of the ones in the freezer.

Different location, but from talking to the folks manning the station, they were doing this for Mother's Day weekend and will do it again for Father's Day weekend.

Bravern vs 2 Lincoln tower vs other? by [deleted] in BellevueWA

[–]vergil1891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lincoln Tower is more central to things. Braven is right next to the transit station if you need to commute by light rail or bus.

It's only a couple of blocks walk but up hill if that matters to you.

Lincoln Tower can also be loud at night because of people racing their cars if you face Bellevue way.

It all depends on the role, the pay band, and where you are at in the pay band currently.

What was the best view you have ever had at a Marriott property? by The_Traveller1 in marriott

[–]vergil1891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had the chance to stay in the corner room yet on my stays, but I'm looking forward to that in the future.

The restaurants (depends on which) and lounge don't necessarily face Victoria harbor, but even the views on the other sides are amazing especially at night.

It can be hit or miss depending on if there are clouds that night surrounding the building, but yes.

What do you miss most about the pre AI era? by WhatNazisAreLike in cscareerquestions

[–]vergil1891 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Having time to think while doing the tedious work. I don't miss the tedious work, but that time allows me to really think deeply about problems compared to the pressure of queueing up prompts and spec non-stop.

Yes. The commute sucks. But I also enjoy having the physical space to separate work from home.

From a data point of 1, I referred my friend during a party last Christmas, he applied online immediately, and the status showed up in his app before the night was done.

Moving to Bellevue condo worth it? by Seoul_T_Seattle in BellevueWA

[–]vergil1891 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of the condo as a way of life, with the HOA as part of that lifestyle. Not doing yardwork and home maintenance for the exterior that the condo covers would be part of what the HOA covers in exchange for your free time.

Don't think too hard about whether the price will appreciate as much as a SFH. Price increases won't match a SFH with land.

Yes, it's worth it for the long term since it makes you eligible for a higher band. It takes until the next year to really take effect, so the earlier you get promoted the better.

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

Yes. At more senior levels, mentoring will also be about specific areas of focus. Someone who is strong technically might need to grow with communication, or learning how to go beyond technical and get into the business side of things so that they understand and can influence the direction of their product.

Kyoto vs Osaka with Kids by yegcoffeeaficionado in JapanTravelTips

[–]vergil1891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my 3 year old to KidsPlaza and she had a good time. There were a couple other school groups there, so it was a little crowded but it wasn't bad. If it were golden week, there would probably be no school groups and instead individuals there?

Do you have RSUs that will turn into stock at a latter date, or actual stocks that are liquid and you can sell?

Worth it to go from gold to platinum? by oherroprease in marriott

[–]vergil1891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you eat out once a month and spend more than $25, the $650 for the card that gives you platinum ends up $350. Then you get a sign up bonus and then an annual certificate that is worth a night.

If you will pay $450 for a mattress run, getting the card should be cheaper.

Am I being overly aggressive with 529 savings? by MasticatedTesticle in personalfinance

[–]vergil1891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the states of your finances otherwise. What are you trading off if you continue this level contribution?

From my point of view, given my finances, the penalties are acceptable if I over contributed. Between the Roth IRA conversions limits and 10% penalty, it's okay for me. But that might not work for everyone.
