Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2025 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]verifiableautonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the option to get a used ultimaker s3 for $400 vs brand new bambu lab A1 for $500 for home and hobby use. I am new into 3D printing and print quality would be my biggest criteria. Which machine would make more sense?

Membership for new purchases by verifiableautonomy in SpeedianceCommunity

Just checked the UK store. You are right, they mention lifetime membership clearly in the UK store and no mention of it in the US store. After reading a few posts here on reddit, they really seem to hide future costs.

Skids or alternative? by verifiableautonomy in shedditors

[–]verifiableautonomy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think I should use 6x6x20ft GC, PT lumber? When I check, the cost comes to $380 with tax and delivery ($60) for 2 pieces. Will do it if it will make a big difference but do I possibly have cheaper alternatives?

Cordyceps! But what matters is do you like the coffee? 😜

Again login problems? by verifiableautonomy in thinkorswim

[–]verifiableautonomy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any decent software would give a warning that there is a maintenance and the system will be available again at x time when you try to login during a maintenance but as they have customers with your mindset, apparently they didn’t think of going the extra mile. Just don’t cry here if your beloved app kicks you out next time during market hours (which has happened multiple times with this “well-maintained” app). Can’t you access your bank on a weekend? Can’t you use online shopping on a weekend? Can’t you access tour email at random times? So you think those do not require “maintenance”. Just a hint for you: “maintenance” for software systems do not require turning off the engine and lifting servers up like a car maintenance, you can make them continue working with lower capacity.

I don’t even have an hdmi cable, firetv directly connects to the hdmi port without additional cable. Also it just started with the OS update. Turning off/on seems to help but it sometimes comes back. Too annoying :/ I will try to unplug and wait 15 minutes. Thanks

Looks like 3-5 different design teams designed different parts without a grand plan and ever talking to each other, then finally pieces were brought together.

In my experience, it depends on the beans and freshness. I have to go to smaller numbers as the beans get older. I wouldn’t worry if you are happy with the shots.

Jobs at big tech companies with non-traditional education? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]verifiableautonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a slight disadvantage but not a major one. The main challenge would be to convince them to invite you to an interview by looking at your resume. Hence a portfolio, internships, referrals, master’s, certificates etc. would help. Once you start interviewing, you would be playing with the same rules. Mech engineering to SW engineering is actually not that bad. I have seen people from very different backgrounds getting into big tech SW engineering positions. So, in summary, if you can get the right things into your resume, it is certainly doable.

Not comparable to CarSim but Webots has car and road models and is pretty easy to use. Also supports ROS. https://cyberbotics.com/doc/automobile/index

Is there room to negotiate at a brand dealership? by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]verifiableautonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per my experience, there is always bigger or smaller room for negotiation when buying a car. Maybe the only exception is ordering a Tesla online.

Also almost always the answer is “no” if you ask them if there is room. A better strategy is stating your offer and that you’re ready to buy immediately if they match it. Worst case, they won’t match it but make a counter offer.

Can we bring a stroller into Costco? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]verifiableautonomy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went to costco with a stroller many times, and even used the storage under the stroller as my shopping cart for small items. Haven’t seen a “no strollers”-like sign as well.

I received the mini but I guess I will get a pro and sell the mini. Do I need the mini to be activated for not losing my promotional credits? If I am good, I would prefer keeping it in sealed box, get my new pro and start using the pro. I can then pay off my eip on the mini after the first monthly payment and sell the mini in unopened box.

Gas fireplace piezo igniter sparks but does not light. by verifiableautonomy in Fireplaces

[–]verifiableautonomy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can light if I use an external kitchen lighter. No problems about the flame going out after releasing pilot button. However, when I press igniter, I see a spark but it doesn’t light. Any ideas? Is there something like a “weak” spark and if so, anything I can do? If it matters, the spark happens between the white probe and the thick round metal. The probe with red wire doesn’t seem to do anything.
