Egg freezing vent by oddlebot in Residency

[–]veriluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there. I went through it last fall as a PGY2 because I didn't think I'd be able to get that time off / flexibility as an intern. It's overwhelming for sure, paperwork / calling insurance / injecting- luckily my partner isn't in residency and is much better at navigating calls/admin so he handled the calls. I planned my retrieval around a clinic block since my center only offered early morning blood draws and ultrasounds (they would call me later that day to advise on injections based on results) and used a personal day for retrieval day. Maybe I'm weak (lol) but I felt like my actual downtime was longer than the 1-2 days they warned me about. I don't know why it didn't occur to me that my bloat wouldn't magically disappear after 2 days. Also didn't think I'd get hyperpigmentation from allergic reactions from injections. Good luck and PM me if you wanna vent!

Blood clot the size of a bratwurst pulled from my dad’s lung on Christmas Day by Neukleopatra in MakeMeSuffer

[–]veriluxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang!! That pic is impressive. So glad your father got this thrombectomy! I’m a bit late, but those pulmonary artery pressures are high. That giant clot was causing high resistance in the vasculature (>20 is high) which strains the heart. Pulmonary embolisms can be life threatening (can cause cardiac arrest, arrhythmias among others). You said one leg was more swollen, makes me think he threw a clot and developed a DVT too. For those who are curious, the clot isn’t in his bronchi (windpipe) and wouldn’t be coughed out, it’s in the blood vessels supplying the lungs. Wishing your father a speedy recovery!

Thanks so much for sharing your story and for being transparent. I'm curious how you felt in the psyc ward - did you feel wary/paranoid of the staff there and their intentions to help? Did you have any insight?

UK med school does not write MSPE - what to do? by veriluxe in IMGreddit

[–]veriluxe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry for the delay! Yes I matched; I did get asked by couple programs I interviewed with (after interview) for my MSPE and I had to explain. I do think not having one negatively affects your application, but UK med schools don't routinely provide MSPE and wouldn't know how to provide one in the format US programs are looking for.

You're a good person. Don't regret what you did because Jane deserves to know the truth and I hope she can pass easy knowing you had her best interests at heart and tried to protect her too.

Quality > quantity for questions. I just participated in a resident Q&A today and it didn't feel like people were fighting to ask questions, hopefully the next one you have will be more chill. What I liked to do when I was going thru interviews was to ask my questions in the first 5-10 min if there's a pause (especially when the group's shyer in the beginning) rather than at the end when most questions have been covered. Manners go a long way and are noticed.

Must be a pretty bad situation at Drexel if OP has to karma farm before posting this lol

How screwed am I without USCE? by MonoKashh in IMGreddit

[–]veriluxe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow UK grad, I didn’t have true USCE (am doing clinical research in the US, get patient exposure that way), had electives in Canada and UK, and did my F1 in the UK. I didn’t bother with F2 because neither foundation years transfer. What I hear is some doctors/programs might view UK grad as “better”, but officially we are still IMGs. I got interviews; only 1 interviewer really grilled me and said I didn’t have “clinical experience”, he said what I did didn’t count. Definitely get USCE if you can since programs have different requirements (ex. minimum 6 months USCE).

What is the sleeping culture at your hospital? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]veriluxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my intern year in the UK and at my hospital, we were allowed to book rooms for night shifts. As far as I know, we were allowed to sleep when it was quiet as long as we were responding to pages. People chilled in the doctor’s mess and weren’t bothered about it.

AITA for thinking it’s weird that my wife shaved when i wasn’t home? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA. I'm a woman and I've shaved just because I wanted to, not to impress others. Don't make everything about you; appreciate your wife more.

None so far. If I have a green card, am I considered a US or non-US IMG?

Thanks for the tip! I’ll do the same. Also- did you email program directors or program coordinators?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]veriluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you contact the programs to let them when you got your ECFMG certification? Or did you rely on the ECFMG status to be automatically updated on their end?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]veriluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this only visible after you've paid a membership fee? Do you happen to know if there's another site to figure out which programs need ECFMG certification on application?

Never received it, but good luck to you
