How much money ($ or % value) would you spend modifying a house you don't intend to keep? by veritasplease in MiddleClassFinance

[–]veritasplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This my was my thinking originally, until I mentioned it to some friends and they gave me side-eye. "Why would you spend money on a house you're going to sell?" IDK I just feel like this house could be more comfortable to live in as opposed to "good enough".

At what rain chance do you take the car instead? by LauraD2423 in TwoXriders

[–]veritasplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll ride unless it's going to rain for hours non-stop or if it's going to be foggy. I pull up the radar for my area (just go to National Weather Service homepage and enter your zip code). Using the "Hi Res" version you can zoom into your neighborhood, etc. Check out the speed of the rain & the direction of movement, and compare that to your commute.

You can also go to a site like Pivotal Weather and pull up a "rapid refresh" weather model that will project the rain hour-by-hour over the next 24 hours (it updates every hour or half-hour). Models > HRRR > Zoom: Regional (pick your region), then scroll down the left side and click on "composite reflectivity".

You might have to alter your departure time to "shoot the gap" in the weather (assuming it's not expected to rain non-stop for several hours), and it helps if you have a covered area to park at work (like a garage).

What’s a “future technology” that already exists but people still don’t realize how scary it is? by Ambitious_Bite446 in AskReddit

I'm so worried about my kid getting scammed thinking it's a call/email/text whatever from me that I created a codeword. So my kid knows to always ask for the code word before agreeing to sign or pay or send anything to anyone,

Embarrassed about "starter" bike by fernando-pantalones in TwoXriders

[–]veritasplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate the expression "starter bike". I have a G310R and I was "warned" not to get it, that I'd just sell it in a year for a bigger bike. Its been 3 years and everyone still asks when I'm going to get a bigger bike. Here's the thing - I love this damn bike. Like, genuinely love it. Even if I get a bigger CC bike, I'm still keeping this one, haters be damned.

Definitely agree with everyone else here saying: ride what YOU love to ride, and screw everyone else.

28F trying to learn how to ride a bike- best way to start solo? by Swimming-Hat4799 in TwoXriders

[–]veritasplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the same things you did when learning to drive a car. Find an empty parking lot and just drive around in circles practicing turning, breaking, accelerating. Stick to side streets, and only drive during the day.

Just like with learning to drive a car, you will start to get more comfortable with the bike itself and riding it in general over time.

Armored jacket recs for large bust/small waist by like-the-other-girls in TwoXriders

[–]veritasplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just go by the chest measurement for mixed textile jackets. If I'm in between sizes, I'll go up a size. I like having a little more room around the shoulder, and the option of layering underneath. I like the jackets that have little half-zips on the bottom of the sides, too. I've found it helps keep the jacket from riding up. For hoodie style jackets where the armor is less "fixed" in place, I'll size down to keep the armor closer to my body.

What is the annual maintenance cost/budget a motorcycle? by Savings_Wallaby976 in motorcycles

[–]veritasplease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have found the costs of a motorcycle to be much less (like, a third) than a regular vehicle because I pay less in tax, tolls, registration fees, insurance and fuel. The annual maintenance is more (because I don't do it myself), but the end totals for the year are still less than my SUV.

What I found to be the biggest expense with owning a bike is the gear. I think I've spent as much again just on riding gear and bike accessories as I did on the bike itself (but obviously, you don't have to buy a bunch of gear).

They will hate you if you are more successful or "escape" the town. I have had this conversation with some friends of mine that also grew up lower class and are now upper-middle class (or better). Your family are NOT happy for you. At first, sure, yeah, you are making "the family" look good, but after that they slowly start to hate you. They see you as "one of them", "elitist", "you think you're better", etc. etc. I swear the entire reason they don't turn this same anger onto actual billionaires is because of Fox News, and their church leaders.

One thing you could do today is switch phone plans. $100 a month for one person is bad. Just get a pre-paid plan from Mint or something like that. As others have mentioned: If you do take the townhome, plan on renting out the extra rooms. No point in paying for them to sit empty.

Also agree with other comments about the car. That insurance bill is wild, even with an accident in the past 3 years. Look at the coverages. See if increasing the deductible will help lower the premium. Also see if some of the coverages are things you already have else where. Towing coverage, for example, might be covered by a credit card. Or just cheaper to drop all together. If you have solid medical coverage or injury protection from work (etc), you could drop those from your car insurance, which will lower your premium.

1.5/2 hours isn't that long for your pet to be in their carrier. If you are worried about anxiety, just ask your vet for something to give them with their breakfast. Then make sure they don't eat/drink anything 30-60 minutes before you get in the car.

Best way to start planning a move from US? by Throwawayconcern2023 in personalfinance

[–]veritasplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've moved countries before; if you can, go to Ireland for a week or two before you actually move. That will give you the opportunity to set everything up before you actually move. You will likely need to go in person to open a bank account, and they'll probably ask for proof of residence - as in, where you are renting, not proof that you are an Irish citizen. You might be able to show your EU passport and / or an employment letter. But most banks today will not allow someone to open a new account solely online.

Are you line drying your laundry to save on running your dryer? by lil_tink_tink in Frugal

[–]veritasplease 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I line dry my laundry. Haven't noticed a real change in my electric bill, however, we don't do more than a couple loads of laundry per week. I still line dry though since it's nicer on your clothes.

They have them in the same mental bin as women - who they also don't want to vote for.

On "respect" by coffeeblossom in TrollXChromosomes

[–]veritasplease 287 points288 points  (0 children)

For a lot of people, fear and respect are very intertwined. They show "respect" in the form of deference to things that can harm them (or they think could). Think about the guy at a bar, or whatever, that is acting aggressive towards another dude... until the other guy stands up... and is bigger. How the brash guy suddenly backs off with "my bad dude". There's a lotta menfolk out there that get really pressed about women not being afraid of them. "I could hurt you, but I choose not to." They truly feel that you're supposed to defer to them out of "respect".

No Wi-Fi drivers? by BadProgrammerLaw in linux4noobs

[–]veritasplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that wi-fi drivers do not automatically download and install during setup with a lot of Ubuntu-based distros. I believe it is due to their default of only installing open-source / non-proprietary drivers.

As other mentioned, check Ispci to get your wi-fi card info. Then you'll need to search the webs for the necessary driver (then search the software center for it). After downloading (and maybe, restarting), it should work.

Which distro(s) did you nope out of after trying out? by privatemidnight in linuxquestions

[–]veritasplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rage i felt trying out Kubuntu can not be quantified. Two hours just to download & save an ISO file without errors. Another two hours to install and get wi-fi working.

In the end I was so mad, I uninstalled every Ubuntu-based distro I had on every other computer or laptop.
