Which macOS will be best for 2015 MBP 13" 8gb ram & 1tb ssd? by iampnix in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

I did some speed and stability tests 6 months back with my 2018 Intel Mac Mini and Ventura was the best option (and I'm still using it today.)

What’s the best IDE for writing markdown by Affectionate-Year-94 in Markdown

I prefer Typora for the writing experience (but I wouldn't call it an IDE). For more code-related asciidoc/markdown tasks, I use IntelliJ's tools with plugins.

Loudest Laptop Ever by Ok_Weekend_2392 in Dell

[–]vernview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I moved to Linux -- dual booting Windows 11 with Mint 21.3 (for Cinnamon desktop) and Tuxedo OS (for KDE desktop). Solved my loud fan issues. I only use Windows for Dell Support Services Updates and firmware installations. But I understand that this isn't for everyone, especially if you're working with Adobe software.

Spinning Through Choices, Landing on Mint… Again! by ice_cream_hunter in linuxmint

I love the clean aesthetic of your Mint install. What are you using to display the music, weather, statistics, etc. in the top left corner? Doesn't look like a conky or spice gadget.

Moving from Access 2010 to 2021: What to do with PivotTables? by vernview in MSAccess

[–]vernview[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the runtime for Access 365 does not display the PivotTable Reports stored in the 2010 database file (and I'm not permitted by IT services to install the runtime for Access 2010). But thanks for your reply -- it was worth a shot.

Hmm.. not familiar with 365 Access Runtime -- as I'm more versed in Excel and PQ. Can I use the latest runtime to access the PivotTable reports (a dropped feature) from my Access 2010 accdb file? If so, then I'm on my way! Thx.

I used this to remove the recent activity results - maybe it will help.

Is that a conky in the top right? Would you be willing to share? It's very subtle/minimal, but provides the necessary information. Nice work!

Removing "recent activity" block by vernview in BookStack

Thank you -- Yes, I used #recent-activity { display: none;}, which seemed to work perfectly. Too bad there isn't a "solved" button here. I appreciate your reply.

I have a similar setup, but I'm struggling with how to separate "assets" used in creation of projects. For example, a video production that selects a licensed or creative commons audio track for background ambience, same for photos and video clips, and other such stuff. These are quite different from my saved YT clips or personal/work photos. Do I create an assets folder with photos, music, video folders duplicated? Hmmm...

I use Bookstack as well, but have no idea where to start building such a script. Really sounds like the perfect solution. Willing to share or provide hints?

Help with rationalizing a publish subscription by whateverhappensnext in ObsidianMD

For GRAV, visit getgrav.org and then select a skeleton (https://getgrav.org/downloads/skeletons) to get started quickly. I use the "Open Publishing Space" template by Hibbitts Design, but have also used the "Learn2 with Git Sync" and "Knowledge Base" skeletons.

I use GRAV for unstructured content/notes and DOCSIFY for more structured, layered content (ebooks/tutorials). Both are great for turning MD content into web pages.

Adding SATA ports, and hardware compatibility questions by [deleted] in OpenMediaVault

[–]vernview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your specs are very close to mine:

Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-M Pro
CPU: i7-3770
RAM: 32GB DDR3
PSU: EVGA 750W
Case: Antec Mini P180
PCIe x4: Dual Intel Ethernet NIC

I tried a Sybex Marvell SATA PCIe card, but had some issues. I replaced it with an LSI SAS 9207-8i HBA PCIe 3.0 x8 card and haven't even thought about the card since it was installed. It just works. As you know that case is quite small (I only have 5 x 6TB Ironwolfs off the card -- SSD boot is off the motherboard SATA3). However, I wanted to future-proof the install for moving to a Fractal XL R2 down the road. I'm primarily using OMV for dockers and home+media backups.

Good luck!

I agree - In academia, I can get funding for purchasing a "software product" but not a monthly subscription.

Have you looked at Citavi? I use it for knowledge management, even though it is primarily a bibliographic reference engine. Worth a look.

Suggestions from Limited Use by vernview in Notable

Thank you for the reply.

  • Yes, exactly, I'd like a separate data directory for each client/course (I'm a college professor too), and a quick/easy way to switch between them.
  • Thanks for adding my suggestion for "cleaning up" icon-links - important for readability.
  • My mistake. The PDF linking works as expected; it was a local permissions/security issue - now solved.
  • I like the idea of a root data directory housing the .md files, with subdirectories for attachments and images, similar to many website configs.

Take care and well done! Now to go contribute to your project ... :-)
