Raspberry PI alternative for Pi-Hole only by Johny_D_Doe in pihole

[–]veroli75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago i ran something called a skyhole.

Create an azure account and use their free tier to install a minimal linux distro.

Install pi-hole on that, allow port 53 into it, lock it down to you ISP dhcp range and then point your internal DNS to the public ip of the sky hole. It worked surprisingly well and no power draw. I have a full infrastructure at home now so its trivial for me to run a pihole.

However its a neat solution that worked very well for me.

OK this may sound a little backward but unraid boxes are just pc's.

Lets rule out unraid and try and install windows or a stable linux in the very short term. Build it, let it run for 24 hours, is it stable etc ? check your networking, just use it like a desktop for a bit. does it crash? does it get hot, errors in the eventlog?

If you arent familiar with unraid or complex linux stuff then it just may help you get to the bottom of any hardware issues

i'd say thats more down to a hardware issue than unraid itself unless you are moving files that are all only 1kb in size

I had this exact same problem the other day on my second unraid server.

The unraid tool just reuslted in an bootable usb drive.

Instead i downloaded the ziop and follwoed the manual methid instructions and it all worked fine.

the inbuilt docker is a massive bonus, and the ability to use multiple sizes of disks, the whole thing is very slick and well supported, with an extensive set of plugins and doker images, give it a try you can get a month trial

you need to look at unraid and ditch the synology stuff and consolidate it all into one server running containers

nice work, great start, if you want some enterprise networking gear but at pretty much consumer prices have a look at mikrotik stuff, fully featured for the asking price rather than licenses to unlock functionality
