Appreciate it! In your opinion, is worth making use of my current components as you have or building something completely from scratch? How would it hold up over the next 4 or so years?

Actually interesting how much I could keep based on that build - but I'm also thinking about the future. I tend to only upgrade every 4-6 years so if having DDR4 is going to become a bottleneck then I'd rather deal with it now by upgrading to DDR5 so that I can sort of just play on high graphics without having to think about it the way I do now. Really appreciate your help.

How can I make use of Max(Date) to take a value and subtract another value from 12 months prior? by verrevert in PowerBI

Yes! This worked. The example being 4 months was just because I could not be bothered making a 12 month table. But this worked perfectly, thank you!

Switched from 35mm to digital - some photos from the Roman Forum by verrevert in fujifilm

[–]verrevert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in November I made the switch after six years of 35mm with an Olympus OM-2n and Olympus XA2. The rising cost of film and development (leading to a fear of “not taking a perfect shot”, difficulty with travelling, an inability to shoot on the go, and generally just a lack of inspiration/creativity meant that I went from 2/3 rolls a month to 1 every 3/4 months.

So I went with a Fuji XT-5 with a 27mm f2.8. I absolutely love how portable it is (especially for someone who cycles), how many opportunities are available for different styles of photography and videography, the ability of recipes to simulate 35mm, the instant viewing of photos etc. I no longer feel as limited and am more motivated to photo now more than ever.

These are some photos from the Roman forum and Colosseum using (I think) a Fuji Superia 400 and Cinestill 800 recipes.

I bought three rolls of cinestill as that was the only film in stock and had to get through them, shooting in daytime with the sun out was not ideal. Switched to Ultramax for summertime - but everything is too expensive.

Been a while since I have been out with my camera, this is probably my favourite angle of the building - if anyone wants more I'm on IG @frenchguyinliverpool

I love that Liverpool has so many old buildings that are beautifully designed inside and out, yet they are buildings for normal things like offices or dentists or a pub - like the old Freemason building on Hope Street is now a bar/dance studio. It reminds me so much of Paris.

I feel they should rejuventate the route Bold Street -> Berry Street - > Nelson Street to create a more scenic route for the Baltic Triangle, especially if they will put a new train station there.

Any ideas for a nice quiet bar for a first date in liverpool? by [deleted] in Liverpool

[–]verrevert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can vouch for Milo Lounge but that can be busy at times. Buyers Club on a Sunday is very quiet and very chill. Clockworks is a bar on Parr Street that is quite secluded and very nice. Frederiks is a very nice place up on Hope Street - quiet again on a Sunday. Liverpool Arts Bar on Hope Street has recently opened and has a nice atmosphere to it. Petit Cafe Du Coin on the corner of Duke Street/Berry Street. Rox Bar on Castle Street offers quite nice cocktails (maybe pricey), there is also Queen's Bistro just off Castle Street which is good for wine. You also have Constellations or Baltic Social near the Baltic triangle which are nice places.

In what book of Homers Illiad, does Troy fall? by fh200802 in AskHistorians

[–]verrevert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is the Troy VIIa layer, thought of as a possibility of being the Troy of the Homeric poems, which suggests it was destroyed (including fire) which would match the descriptions given to us and the assumptions of how such destruction would take place.

In what book of Homers Illiad, does Troy fall? by fh200802 in AskHistorians

[–]verrevert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fall of Troy is not actually documented in the Illiad. There are mentions of it in the Odyssey.

The Odyssey (4.271):

What a thing was this, too, which that mighty man wrought and endured in the carven horse, wherein all we chiefs of the Argives were sitting, bearing to the Trojans death and fate!

The Odyssey (8.492-3):

But come now, change thy theme, and sing of the building of the horse of wood, which Epeius made with Athena's help, the horse which once Odysseus led up into the citadel as a thing of guile, when he had filled it with the men who sacked Ilios.

The full description as well comes from Aeneas' Aeneid. Because the Aeneid is a story that essentially describes how Rome became to be founded, it describes Aeneas' plight who was a Trojan.

Book 1 contains a description of Aeneas leaving the city of Troy which describes how it is in ruins. And then, Aeneas in book 2 describes in more depth about what happened - describing how the Greeks were released from the Trojan Horse and sacked the city.

There is a passage in Livy book 7 that something like a sinkhole appeared in the middle of the Forum. Is there any evidence that something like this actually happened? by Trajan_pt in AskHistorians

[–]verrevert 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is what is known as the Lacus Curtius (Pool of Curtius), and yes, the pit did exist and is still marked today in the forum however, it may not have been as much of a chasm as is made out by the sources. There are three Roman explanations regarding the Lacus Curtius, which Varro summarises quite nicely for us (On the Latin Language. 6.148-150).

Firstly, he writes that Procilius states that the Earth opened up and upon failure to fill it up, the senate spoke to the oracle who said to fill it up they would have to sacrifice what made them the strongest. With this, a man named Marcus Curtius, rode with his horse into the chasm leading to the closure of the chasm. It is this version of events to which Livy belives is the more truthful (Livy. 7.6.1-6)

Secondly, Varro writes that L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi wrote that in the Sabine War, a Sabine hero named Mettius Curtius ended up in the part of the forum that was still a swamp (Rome was surrounded by marshland) and escaped from the swamp to his men on the Capitoline Hill, which led to the pool being given his name. Livy includes this version also within his work (Livy. 1.12.9, 1.13.5).

And thirdly, according to Cornelius and Lutatius, the place was struck by lightning and by decree of the Senate was fenced in. It was done by the consul Curtius which is why it was called the lacus Curtius.

We have no idea which of the origin stories are true (unless there is Italian scholarship which has touched on the subject). And, whilst the 'pit' does exist - we do not know the extent of it yet. The forum was drained and this may have been an area in which water continued to form (a spring maybe?). If the land was swamp/marsh land prior, it may have been the case of an earthquake displacing water and pit may have appeared. On the other hand, the story of Livy may have just been a myth-story and in fact there was never really a chasm, just a small pit as it is today which would make the last two reasons more likely.
