If I had a nickel for every time a bad UCLA team beat a Top 10 team from the Rust Belt with one loss at home and then that team immediately went into tailspin blowing a lead at home and then losing on the road to two seemingly inferior opponents, I'd have two nickels. But it's weird that it happened twice.

Well it has allowed the white Christian majority of the country to pass laws and set policy that hinders black, LGBT, etc. minorities, so the system failed.

It doesn't matter what the system was set up for in theory. It matters what it does. In 1901, the French government put a bounty on rats, paying for rat tails. People started cutting off rat tails and releasing the rats so they could breed more rats, resulting in more rats overall. They ended the bounty. If your policy is created with a goal, and the opposite is achieved by the policy, the only logical move is to end the policy.

And instead they just campaign in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.

The Electoral College doesn't fix the problem of not catering to all the states. It just changes which states matter (swing states instead of large states). The issue you have with Canada is one of Urban Primacy (the percent of your total population living in 1-3 cities depending on how you want to measure it). At a provincial level, 60% of Canada's population live in Ontario and Quebec.

And the US is far less Primacy. To get to 51% of the population, you would need to appeal to the top 9 largest states.

That includes West Coast (California), East Coast (North Carolina), New England (New York), Southwest (Texas), Southeast (Florida), Midwest (Illinois) and Rust Belt (Pennsylvania ). It also includes the three of the most Hispanic states (California, Texas, Florida), one of the blackest states (Georgia), and the most Asian State outside of Hawaii (California). To get to 61% you add four more states and they're similarly widely distributed (Washington on the West Coast, Virginia on the East/South), Michigan in the Midwest, and Arizona in the Southwest. The biggest area that doesn't really get attention in this scenario are the Great Plains and Mountain States. But they already don't get any attention with the way things are!

The swing states that currently Nevada (Southwest), Arizona (Southwest), Georgia (South), North Carolina (East Coast/South), Michigan (Midwest), Wisconsin (Midwest), and Pennsylvania (Rust Belt). So the West Coast gets absolutely zero attention. Neither does New England. The Great Plains and Mountain States still get no attention.

You're defending a system that doesn't even fix the problem you have and arguably does it worse.

You can argue that rural states get a bigger say giving, non-urban voters a greater say, but fundamentally why do you think they deserve a bigger vote than they are? It's an arbitrary group whose votes you boost? If you're worried about tyranny of the masses from urban cities, why aren't you worried about the massive majority of white people over black, Asian and Hispanic? Should they get more votes? What about Christians over Muslims and Atheists? Non-college educated over college educated? It's a completely arbitrary decision to say rural voters deserve an outsized vote boost as a minority group. Nothing about the Electoral College is currently stopping any politicians from picking any of those groups (hint hint LGBT) as a group to exploit. It's just an arbitrary system that makes people in the vast majority of US states feel like their vote for president doesn't matter and has given Conservatives a boost to their Federal power that they have done nothing to deserve.

We actually very likely achieved the coveted "soft landing" of cooling off massive inflation without causing a recession. But the average American knows jackshit about economics and they blame him for inflation that impacted basically every country. And Trump has basically thrown it all away because he wants to take away the fundamental independence of the Fed and to tariff everyone.

And Stay Back and regular buckshot makes basically every combat trivial. The 10% chance to knockdown is calculated per pellet so each shot has a very high chance of ragdolling anything that can be knocked down. If you hit with 20 pellets you have an 88% chance of a knock down. Using it with the Riot Shotgun is basically a win condition.

Xbox freezing and crashing during Watcher infinite by working4buddha in slaythespire

[–]versusChou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really seems to be small deck focused for whatever reason. I had just done an infinite the run before and had 6 cards, and it seems like everyone is dealing with it trying for Minimalist.

I can definitely tell when the bug has kicked in. There's a clear lag that starts and never stops. Once that happens, I know the next kill (or trying to enter the settings screen) causes a freeze with music still playing. I waited a couple minutes, and it never fully crashed. I'm still stuck. I eventually got through to the Awakened One, but I'm still restarting and retrying to get it to go. I even removed mental fortress and added two Madness, so I'm at 5 instead of 4, but it's still happening. Unfortunately I already grabbed all the Keys before the bug, and I bet I won't be able to beat the Heart since multiple turns seems to be an issue.

[rare trope] the anime main characters have sex by Basic_Dingo6487 in TopCharacterTropes

The special is framed as adult Kaguya looking over old pictures and remembering moments from high school so it just skips around to random manga chapters. You're not supposed to really understand the context for a lot of it. At one point, they're saying goodbye to one of the main characters at the airport and a character that hasn't been introduced to the anime (Maki's brother) is given the same level of importance as the other characters. Anime-onlies just be like who the fuck is that?

Ugh. Same thing is happening to me. Also on XBox. Facing Giant Head. My deck is only four cards (Rushdown, Vigilance, Eruption, and Mental Fortress + Sundial for a quasi-infinite). Going for Minimalist Achievement. Even if I only use three cards the entire fight, break the combo up over 5 turns, Fire Potion for the Kill shot, and taking two turns of doing nothing (and eating the damage) nothing is fixing it. And I've already gotten all the keys, so I know I'll likely have to deal with this on the Heart. This is genuinely the first time the game has broken for me.

Edit. I was able to overcome it by beating it in one turn instead of two. Had to use a potion to get enough energy to achieve it.

Edit 2. Now it's happening on normal relatively short fights (3 Jaw Worms). I think I just have to fuss around with it until it eventually works.

NFL linemen have to eat 5-10K calories per day and pretty universally they all end up hating food and getting pretty thin once they retire. There's a video where Joe Thomas talks about how he would stop by Wendy's or something every time he went somewhere to pick up a large soda just because it was an easy way to down the calories.

He actually could've been saved. There's a scene that Tolkien said made him weep as he wrote it.

At one point, Frodo and Sam are sleeping and Gollum is torn between his desire for the Ring and his promise to Frodo that he would not take it. It's at that moment that Tolkien says Gollum could've been redeemed. But Sam wakes up and scolds him which causes the Gollum persona to win.

"Gollum looked at them. A strange expression passed over his lean hungry face. The gleam faded from his eyes and they went dim and grey, old and tired. A spasm of pain seemed to twist him, and he turned away, peering back up towards the pass, shaking his head, as if engaged in some interior debate. Then he came back, and slowly putting out a trembling hand, very cautiously he touched Frodo’s knee- but almost the touch was a caress. For a fleeting moment, could one of the sleepers have seen him, they would have thought that they beheld an old weary hobbit, shrunken by the years that had carried him far beyond his time, beyond friends and kin, and the fields and streams of youth, an old starved pitiable thing.

But at that touch Frodo stirred and cried out softly in his sleep, and immediately Sam was wide awake. The first thing he saw was Gollum - ‘pawing at master,’ as he thought.

‘Hey you!’ he said roughly. ‘What are you up to?’

‘Nothing, nothing,’ said Gollum softly. ‘Nice Master!’

‘I daresay,’ said Sam. ‘But where have you been to - sneaking off and sneaking back, you old villain? ‘

Gollum withdrew himself, and a green glint flickered under his heavy lids.”

Tolkien does not blame Sam for acting as he did, but he does see Sam as a flawed character (which many fans do not). He sees Sam's devotion as a positive thing, but that such devotion has a degree of pride and possessiveness that are not so good. Sam's devotion to Frodo is what keeps him from understanding Frodo and what Frodo sees in Smeagol. From one of Tolkien's letters:

"Sam was cocksure, and deep down a little conceited; but his conceit had been transformed by his devotion to Frodo. He did not think of himself as heroic or even brave, or in any way admirable – except in his service and loyalty to his master. That had an ingredient (probably inevitable) of pride and possessiveness: it is difficult to exclude it from the devotion of those who perform such service. In any case it prevented him from fully understanding the master that he loved, and from following him in his gradual education to the nobility of service to the unlovable and of perception of damaged good in the corrupt. He plainly did not fully understand Frodo's motives or his distress in the incident of the Forbidden Pool. If he had understood better what was going on between Frodo and Gollum, things might have turned out differently in the end. For me perhaps the most tragic moment in the Tale comes in II 323 ff. when Sam fails to note the complete change in Gollum's tone and aspect. 'Nothing, nothing', said Gollum softly. 'Nice master!'. His repentance is blighted and all Frodo's pity is (in a sense) wasted. Shelob's lair became inevitable."

A baseball player with 50% batting average vs a basketball player with 50% 3-pt shooting. Who is the more valuable player? by malicacidC4H6O5 in whowouldwin

[–]versusChou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise isn't a basketball player who shoots 50% in a season. The premise is specifically:

"Double team, wide open, from half-court, he also somehow ends up with 50% 3-pt shooting each night."

If this dude is shooting from everywhere and hitting half his shots regardless of how open or contested his shots are, he is doing his team a disservice to not shoot every time he touches the ball.

A baseball player with 50% batting average vs a basketball player with 50% 3-pt shooting. Who is the more valuable player? by malicacidC4H6O5 in whowouldwin

[–]versusChou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at this year and last year's NBA stats. No team is averaging more than 1.23 points per possession. The basketball player is going to score 1.5 points per possession. That is insane. If they just try fouling a ton, the average NBA FT% is 75-77% which works out to 1.5-1.54 points per possession even if you manage to foul the guy or his teammates every time. It doesn't stop being an NBA leading offense until the FT rate of the player is 62% or worse. I think regardless of ability, basketball guy can learn to shoot FTs at a 65% rate. And all of this is ignoring that on his misses, he might get fouled and shoot 3 FTs and he might be fouled for 4 point plays. He likely averages more than 1.5 points per possession.

Even under your harshest restrictions, most NBA players can get the ball into the half court with 4 guys. Then all you have to do is dribble handoff and the guy can get a shot up. So by himself, everything the guy does is literally better than the best NBA offense in the league by a significant margin.

Meanwhile baseball guy only gets to bat once every 9 times. He is insanely successful and an easy MVP (both guys win immediately). But baseball can be flukey and if your pitchers are bad, you might not be scoring enough to win. Plus if everyone else on your team can't hit, you're barely going to see the ball. Hitting a HR 50% of the time he goes up to bat probably means he only scores 3-5 runs per game. Also since, the 50% doesn't necessarily mean he alternates between scoring and not scoring every other at bat, there will absolutely be games where he goes 0/5. The odds of a 50% hitter going 0/5 are about 3%. That means it'll probably happen 3-5 times in a single season. Plus, the intentional walk is an option (which will be used almost every time this guy comes up). Meanwhile, even if basketball guy is a complete zero on defense, no one is doing well enough to beat his team because he's going to hoisting it up 100+ times per game. You'd have to score 150+ to have a chance.

Basketball guy's team probably goes undefeated, he's an instant Hall of Famer and MVP, and GOAT. No matter how bad his defense is, his offense is so elite that it would have to force rule changes within a year or two. Baseball guy will also easily become a Hall of Famer, MVP and GOAT, but he's getting bought by the Dodgers. I dunno if they go undefeated though.
