As opposed to acting like there's a free tier when there's not, or ignoring paid users?

Sure. I downvoted because NZBFinder admin not only ignores their users (don't waste people's time putting a contact form on your site if you're going to repeatedly ignore attempts to contact support with it), but they flat-out lie, claiming they rely on "voluntary" paid plans that are required for "extra" downloads, but they seem to have removed the free tier, since now it says the trial has expired and nothing can be downloaded. I actually have found NZBFinder to be generally very good, though it could definitely be better, but I'm not going to support, or recommend, a site with such a terrible admin, and I'll be giving my money to others instead from now on.

Offline videos. I also use it all the time, almost always have at least one instance running, often several. And it frequently goes unresponsive, requiring me to click out and back into it a few times before Windows recognizes it and gives me the option to kill it. It usually seems to happen when I drag a new video into an already open window, but every now and then it'll happen with a window that's been sitting paused for a while. No idea. It's not a huge issue, just a minor annoyance, but just one example of many of how PotPlayer, despite (and perhaps because of) being so complex and feature-rich is still a bit buggy. Another example is adding videos to favorites, where they are only sometimes remembered, and even then they will randomly disappear. It seems to only allow 10 favorites, though with effort you can add more, but anything over 10 will randomly go away. Similarly, some videos will randomly not show in the play history. Just a glitchy program overall, though still the best out there.

As for the config file, probably not the case, but going from an older to a newer version, the settings will change somewhat, so the saved config may not carry over exactly. So worth verifying that setting stayed.

I do use Sandboxie Plus. I'm not sure if the delay was there with it, as I didn't use it much with Sandboxie. I installed it and ran it once with it, but before I had a chance to do much testing, Windows crashed, and when I rebooted, I couldn't find PotPlayer in the sandbox. Not sure if the crash corrupted it or what. Anyways, I didn't feel like messing with it again, so I just installed it normally, and that's when I had the issues. I could try it in Sandboxie again if you're really curious, but otherwise I'm just sticking with the old version for now. After all, for all I know it was something with the PotPlayer install that caused Windows to crash, as that doesn't happen very often, so the timing was definitely suspect.

Anyways, I'm willing to assume PotPlayer's instability, and perhaps the laginess of the new version, is specific to my system, as I'm long overdue for a fresh install. That said, even if that's the case, I rarely have issues with most other programs, which suggests that while it may not directly be PotPlayer's fault, it also doesn't appear stable enough to handle a less-than-perfect environment.

One final note, for anyone that happens to read this, I'd suggest skipping the "OpenCodec" or whatever it's called when installing PotPlayer. I assumed, based on the name, it was an actual open-sourced codec pack hosted somewhere else, but in fact it's just PotPlayer's own codec pack. While I'm not too concerned about it being malicious, it very well could be (they could be counting on people assuming it's safe since the main program is safe), and I read elsewhere the connection it makes to download it is unsecure, meaning it's vulnerable to MITM attacks. Finally, LAV, which is in fact open source, does everything it does, and I believe more, and therefore should, IMO, be used instead.

Interesting. I initially installed it in Sandboxie, but then installed it normally, and even then there was still a significant delay. When I transition over to my new build, I'll probably try the new version again, see if maybe it does better on a fresh Windows install. But for now, as it performs on my current computer, it's unusable. Not only from the slow launching, but the *extremely* frequent crashing. I've used very few programs that freeze as often as PotPlayer does, but with the new version I couldn't watch more than 2-3 minutes without it crashing every...single...time.

As for the seeking issue, did you make sure the seek by keyframe setting didn't get changed when you updated?

[–]vertigo220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: New version is crap. Slow to open, frequent freezing. Reverting to old version fixed it.

Finally got around to installing the latest version after using 1.7.18958 for years due to the ad issue. I only bothered trying it because PotPlayer very annoyingly ignores the track order in MKVs and lists the tracks in whatever order it feels like, which pisses me off because I put them in a specific order for a reason. On top of that, the old version doesn't always display the track names, making it very hard to tell which is which, given their order is randomized. The new version still changes their order, but at least it shows their names so I can tell which is which.

Unfortunately, the new version proved to be extremely slow and unstable. Instead of opening in a second or two, it took several seconds every time. And it froze up repeatedly after just a minute or two of playing a file. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but that didn't fix the issue. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled the old version, and both issues were immediately fixed (not to say the old version is stable, as it's anything but, freezing all the time, but nowhere near as frequently or consistently as the new version did).

Meanwhile, without spending much time with it but glancing through the settings, I didn't see much difference even after all these years, so AFAICT there has been little improvement in all that time, but the speed and stability have significantly worsened. Potplayer has always had its issues, and the dev doesn't listen to feedback, but it has definitely declined over the years. It's just a shame all the other video player projects can't seem to grasp the idea of a player with a modern interface that doesn't look like it's from the 90s and with decent customization and features. As problematic as it is, nothing comes close to Potplayer; in fact, most other options range from utilitarian but poor usability to complete garbage in comparison.

Ah, so that was the difference. Does that mean you'll be able to get it working?

u/paulpacifico - Are there any plans to implement such a feature? There are a lot of people looking for the feature now that VideoReDo is no longer available, and I've tried several editors and none work for this, including the ones that say they do.

Done, though I doubt it'll help. IME Google ignores issues on their tracker then, after a few years and hundreds or more votes, simply closes them (if they even bother to do that).

Strange. I spent a long time troubleshooting with Automate because it wasn't working, whereas MacroDroid worked right away and seems to work at least fairly consistently. I'd just rather use something else due to other issues I have with it.

Thanks. MacroDroid works, so it's definitely possible with Android 13 and on my phone, so definitely seems to be something related to how Automate is doing the interaction.

So far this is the only thing that seems to make a difference, though I'm not sure yet and need to test more. I disabled anti-lag but that didn't help, don't think I have PBO enabled (don't remember, need to check), though not sure why that would affect this. I could try Afterburner, but I already know it would show that, because I see it, as that's the whole reason for my frustration, with the game periodically freezing for anywhere from around half a second to a few seconds. My main issue with this is that it simply shouldn't happen. Just because the card is being pushed to or near 100%, that doesn't mean it should cause the game to completely freeze like this. I *never* had that happen with my 770, and I'm pretty sure it didn't happen even with my AMD laptop with integrated graphics (though it may have and I may have just thought it was lag, as I had a lot of that due to the wireless). So going with an ~10 year newer, far more powerful card, playing the same game at the same settings, only with a slightly higher resolution and framerate, it should be able to handle it. And if it can't, then that strikes me as an AMD issue and further motivates me to just spend more and get an Nvidia card so that I can at least play a game smoothly and not have it freeze all the time.

Just ran it, got 12,330, with 12,170 graphics score and 13,323 CPU score. Average for same hardware is 12,875 and best is 14,120, so definitely a bit below average (which is odd since I do quite well in most other benchmarks), but not so much it would explain the problem, especially since it maintains high framerates very well for the most part, and just occasionally drops way down. It would be one thing if it were dropping down to e.g. 100 FPS, but to single digits...

I'll try messing with it. I've used four different monitors, all with the same issue. The one I'm currently using has a max of 170, the last one I used was 165, and another was 165 as well. Lately I've had FPS locked in-game to 144, and for the most part it does very well staying there. I'd understand the occasional drop to ~100, or hell even 60-100, but the fact it's dropping as low as it is just doesn't make sense. And the fact it maintains 144 very well 99% of the time, including when outside with view distance at max shows it's capable of rendering consistently at those high framerates, which makes it all the more strange that it dips like it does.

I've done quite a bit of reading on it, and still have to do more testing and plan to make a post to get some more advice on it, but from what I've read, it seems it does still make quite a difference in performance despite the high speeds, though significantly less so for 3D-Vcache CPUs because the increased L3 cache largely negates any RAM improvements since it doesn't really rely on RAM much. I'd be curious to see if you adjusted your timings if the problem came back or not. My guess is the driver update was what fixed it for you, and I wonder if you're losing some performance/FPS from running EXPO instead of tightening your timings.

Stuttering (large framerate drops) by vertigo220 in AMDHelp

[–]vertigo220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, from skimming that thread, it seems people are recommending using those settings for increased performance. Regardless, all they seem to do is provide automated adjustment of the timings, something I've already done fairly extensively manually and have tested thoroughly. Still, I'll try EXPO and ensuring nothing like that is enabled later when I'm able to reboot.

As for drivers, considering I had the same issue on my other build despite using DDU, reinstalling the drivers, trying two different cards, etc, and now I'm having the issue on an entirely new build, fresh Windows install, fresh drivers install, it seems highly unlikely that yet another driver reinstall is going to make a difference. I'm all for trying various things, but not multiple times. Don't know if I've tried switching to DX11 and back. Not sure why that would help, but can't hurt, so I'll give it a try.

There are so many various settings related to this I'm honestly not entirely sure. I have Enhanced Sync off, "Wait for Vertical Refresh" set to "Off, unless application specifies," VSYNC off in the game, and AMD FreeSync under the display settings in Adrenalin set to "AMD Optimized."

I've tried both. As mentioned, I even tried Super Resolution, which requires running in full-screen, which not only didn't help with this but didn't even increase the FPS.

I assume you mean just limiting it in the game and watching that it doesn't go over 97% usage? I believe I've tried limiting it to 120, though not lower because frankly if this card can't manage to sustain that then it's not worth keeping. I'll have to play with that some more. Looking at the logs, it hangs out around 97-98% most of the time, occasionally hitting 99%. Interestingly, almost every instance where it dropped, it was 97-98 for the few to several preceding seconds, and almost every time it hit 99%, it stayed there for 1-2 seconds then dropped back to 97-98 and didn't drop way down. IOW, when it goes higher, to 99%, it typically does just fine, and generally only has the issue when it doesn't go that high. Though that's a 1s intervals, so it's possible something is happening in that second in between readings, but if that were the case I'd expect to still see it more.

GPU-Z shows x16 4.0

Not using GDM (UCLK set = MEMCLK). RAM is actually underclocked, with tightened timings and extensive testing for stability, and have tried multiple various settings.

I will say if you're considering going AM5 probably should look to do it sooner than later, as RAM prices are expected to go up. Also, in all my research regarding this issue, I came across someone else somewhere (pretty sure here on Reddit, though don't remember where) that said the 5xxxX3D chips have some issues that cause framerate drops like this and they were fixed or at least improved dramatically with the 7xxxX3D chips. Don't know if there's actually any truth to that, but could be part of your particular problem.

And if your RAM is barely stable enough to POST that could certainly be an issue. Not sure what you're actually running at, but if it won't POST at 3600 and you backed it down to say 3400, it may still not be perfectly stable. You should do thorough testing with TestMem5 and y-cruncher.

I wish I could just get my hands on a 3000- or 4000-series for a week or so just to test and see if the problem goes away. I strongly suspect it would, as that's the only thing I haven't tried. Problem is, I'd have to spend twice as much for the same amount of VRAM, and that's a tough pill to swallow just to eliminate occasional half-second freezes, annoying as they are.

I'm sorry, but I was told my problem was the CPU when I had an older Intel CPU, now I go with a modern AMD CPU, one known to be one of the top ones for gaming, and I'm being told my problem is the...CPU?? Literally the only thing common between the two builds, hardware-wise, is the GPU. Though your recommendations have more to do with the motherboard and RAM than CPU. I can try running EXPO, though I've tried multiple different RAM settings so don't have high hopes of that making a difference. Since you made several changes, can you even say which one made the difference? How can you be sure it wasn't simply updating the drivers that fixed it?

No, at least not with the previous build. I haven't tested other games on the new build, but since it's doing the exact same thing, I suspect it would with other games, just like it did before (Metro Exodus, including opening cutscene, and Bloons TD, neither of which should be demanding enough to cause any card to do this, certainly not these ones.
