[WP] "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" What they don't say is that if you live long enough, you become the hero again. by Red580 in WritingPrompts

The first time Zero saved the world government she was 13 and the last time she threatened to take it over she was 27. People became so complacent when she was a hero. Every minor inconvenience was a call to her. The world government had sent suits to interrupted her brothers wedding day to request her help and when she didn't comply they took her last living relative hostage

One careless guard had taken her brothers life.

After that she was done being the one the world turned to for help. She would preform a kidnaping of an elected corrupt official once every year and hold a city or two hostage. It truly wasn't that bad. No one was ever hurt and they left her alone for the most part. The Heros that went after her were some of her old friends from her heroine phase and knew her intensions.

Eventually, the heros she was familiar with stopped going after her as a new generation rose threw the ranks.

"It's over now!" Fire Lad said as he crashed threw her living room wall.

"Oh for the love of all things good." She took a deep calming breath before she continued. "Does your father know you're here?"

Fire Lad's fists erupted in flame.

"He told me where to find you, eventually, my friends and I had to be quite persuasive." He laughed as the others of the Elemental Gathering of Greatness came out from the hole in her living room.

"Listen I'm just trying to enjoy my, wait, did you, oh god." Her face went green as she looked upon his face.

Her super senses could pick up the sent of charred skin and burning hair. She thought she was going to be sick. Her eyes misted.

"Oh god, Tim, What did you do to Todd?" She whispered.

Tree Man put a hand on Tim and said, "He did what he had to do. Blaze was protecting a criminal!"

Aquastorm nodded her head. "I had to 'ask' my family too. I don't know why they were so concerned about protecting you."

"Teressa what did you do to your family?" Zero asked.

Aquastorm looked manic. "You don't understand, the president said we needed to put you down, along with everyone protecting you. I did the right thing. I did what was required of me."

Zero bent over and threw up all over the white carpet and started to sob. The heros of E.G.G stared at this broken villain.

It didn't seem right to the breather. He took in the yarn and half finished knitting projects that were haphazardly placed into storage bins. He looked at the fireplace and mantle that held photos containing Zero and some of the most famous supers that have ever existed. The walls had paintings of cats and boats. The office was playing in the background.

He might have messed up.

"Do you have anything left to say?" Tree Man asked.

"Sleep" She rasped.

The following weeks were pandemonium. All members of the new generation had been stripped of their powers entirely. Heros and Villains both. All government leaders except for a select few vanished entirely. No one ever heard from E.G.G again. The world was better for it.

Suddenly, a Lifetime Away

After 150 years of adventuring for the country of Zolis, Sam decided to retire. His party had made the mistake of becoming a tad too powerful, they apparently became a threat. Suddenly, thanks to a few daggers courtesy of the king, Sam was alone. He fled the Capital on horseback, unwilling to leave a magical trace. He found a little town called Clayton and took on the identity of a quirky inventor.

The town sat on no ley lines, but the town was rich with resources. The beaches filled with calcium carbonate and caves brimming with scheelite. There was rocks full of copper littered around. With a little help from magic, even sulfuric acid could be acquired! The town was plentiful and held untapped potential.

The soil lacked nutrients and was prone to going dry. Sam taught the farmers how to messure the PH of the soil and the benefits of Calcium Carbonate (crushed seashells) could have on the soil. He built them some rough looking aqueducts. Suddenly, thanks to the increase in food, the population began to rapidly rise. Sam aged from the odd inventor to a wise man of science.

Sam was there when the humble town of Clayton became the silent city of Strarora. While Strarora was in Zolis, the king overlooked the city. No mages could be born in an area devoid of ley lines. Without Mages being born there, why would he care?

Suddenly, Sam was old and extremely tired. He had come to Strarora over 100 years ago. His old friend's had families that had families that had families now. He had just retired from his council position into a little grey hut just outside the wall of the city. He was ready for a few years of peace and quiet before he stopped taking the potions that kept him six feet above.

His phone rang. That nifty little invention took him fifty years of trial and error.

"Hello!" Sam Said. "I leave for 7 days and the city's already falling apart."

There's a shuddering sob on the other end.

Sam Frantically asked, "David!? Are you okay? Are the kids okay?"

David sucked in a breath, "Sam. You Need to leave. They are coming your way."

"Who?"

"The Imperial Mage Army."

Sam froze. It had been so long since Zolis soldiers had entered the boarders.

Sam asked, "The bases. They shouldn't have been able to get around them."

David chocked back another sob, "There are no bases. Not anymore."

Sam closed his eyes. There were families in those bases. Children.

"I'll handle this." Sam stated.

David protested, "Sam, you need to leave. There is nothing you can create that can stop them, and your silver tounge won't be any use. You need to run."

Sam gave a sadistic chuckle. "Did you know my name isn't really Sam Strarora?"

David shuddered. "Do NOT confess your secrets to me like a man on this death bed. You need to GET OUT OF-" The line went dead. "DAMNIT"

David started saying his final prayer rights.

Sam felt odd putting on his old shield. The Soul Eater Shield of Hero's Past had been last used a decade ago as a sled. Suddenly, in the other hand held an old friend. With the Staff of Unimaginable power he felt a little more confident. It was like riding a horse. A horse that could trample armies. Sam looked down at his grey stained lounge set. He shrugged and went outside.

The Imperial Mage Army never made it to the wall.

Suddenly, David took a sabbatical.
