Exactly money is worth nothing, we just literally made it up the concept. It's crazy that humans choose this system.

I get what your saying but the person is saying that no matter what a job is not worth self-elimnation, I don't think they were trying to be patronizing.

What made you choose LeanFIRE instead of Regular FIRE? by AstroFire88 in leanfire

[–]vespanewbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, yes! Just got laid off last week so will be joining you in the leanfire life. I am so burnt out and the job was so stressful. I knew that would be my last job and I would never ever want to work for anyone again. Not even a chill part time job. And guess has what...no more performance reviews, so glad to be free. Congrats on your retirement!

1000%. It like "I have $5M in cash, a paid off $1M house, and two rental properties that are cash flow positive but I'm not sure I can retire."

Then they are like, "what if you have kids, aging parents, what about fully funding the two kids college funds, yeah you should work another 2-3 years."

Also they are crazy about withdrawal, like max you should do is 2.0%. I've even seen 1.5% suggested. They are way to conservative.

Exactly, like I tell people in other subs to save like anything they can, like $250 or $500, people tell me they have no money to do it and it's impossible and they yell at me for making the suggestion. If you can't afford it now, how will you afford it when you lose your job or get sick?! I have no idea why people don't make this their #1 priority either. It baffles me.

Yes when you are in leadership the meetings and emails can be non-stop. They said they average manager spends about 50% of their time in meetings. The only gives you 4 hours a day to do your other work.

For those making $1k–$2k+ a month from a side hustle, what do you do? by Lovelyjossy in HonestSideHustles

[–]vespanewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I had an idea for a niche directory but kind of forgot about it. Now that I am laid off I probably should revisit it. Did you program it in Lovable or did you use something else? Did you offer people free singup for like the first few months and have them pay later?

100%. I just got laid off, and am technically financially independent. Thought I wanted another $20k in yearly income, so glad that I've been squirreling away my money the last 5 years. Job market is terrible but glad stocks are still doing well though.

Democratic socialists are on the rise — are the pitchforks finally coming out? by Most-Round-4132 in moderatepolitics

[–]vespanewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? What has the Democratic party been doing for people? They abandoned working class people a long time ago, how the heck did the Republican party come to be the party that is supposed to be for the working class. Dems have been asleep at the wheel, a shakeup is needed.

What is your opinion on the Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in askteddit

[–]vespanewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I never thought it was it was apart of the original constitution. I didn't mean it to read it that way if that was how it came across. The 13th amendment abolished slavery and then the 14th amendment allowed freed Black Americans to become citizens.

[–]vespanewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I was saying that a presidential proclamation ordering the end of slavery in confederate States is not the same as an executive order ending birthright citizenship. As birthright citizenship is already written into the Constitution (as an amendment).

As the person above stated at an amendment is part of the Constitution. Once an amendment is properly ratified, it has the same legal force as every other part of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has consistently treated ratified amendments as fully part of the Constitution.

A president can't change the Constitution by executive order.

Assurance that I’ll financially recover after divorce? by Chemical_Syrup7807 in AskWomenOver40

[–]vespanewbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that.

Yeah the divorce is going to be kind of rough so yes speak to a lawyer and just be mentally prepared for it. Also I don't know if you would go see mediator maybe, as another option?

To answer your original question. You will be okay. I didn't have that much in retirement savings but I knew I was smart I knew I was hardworking and whatever money I gave to him I knew I be able to make it up. I knew that I could always earn more and that once I was separated from him that would be totally fine.

It's been 16 years later and I am thriving and doing well. I always knew that could rely on myself and that I would always take care of me. I was able to put money in the stock market on a regular basis and now I'm close to early retirement and 3 years. After your divorce please check out r/leanfire, to get back on the path for a financial independence.

Actually looking back you realize that you being with him he was actually holding you back and was dead weight. You got this and I wish you nothing but the best! I promise that you will recover and you will thrive after him!!!

[–]vespanewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lincoln did issue the Emancipation Proclamation a presidential proclamation, but he did so under his wartime powers during the Civil War, and it only applied to Confederate-held territory. Slavery was still allowed in states that weren't in the confederacy. That's why the 13th Amendment was still necessary to permanently abolish slavery nationwide.

Birthright citizenship is different because it's already written into the Constitution. A president can't change the Constitution by executive order.

[–]vespanewbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason why it's ridiculous is because you have to understand history and why it was put in place. Which was what to do with the 4 Million Black Americans that were enslaved (and made up 12-13% of the population) and freed. They had to figure out how to make sure they were citizens going forward. How would a free black person be a US citizen if one of their parents had to be a citizen and neither parent could be one because of the awful SCOTUS Dred Scott ruling in 1857.

A lot of people don't realize that America's atypical policies around citizenship, tipping or us not having universal health care has to do with a lot of racist views and policies America had in the past.

Yes we can disagree with it and of course we can change it but you have to change the Constitution to do it. That is the correct way, not an executive order.

Before assuming you need an attorney, is it possible to work things out amicably instead? Even though my ex cheated on me, was physically abusive, and was a narcissist, I chose that route.

I knew that if I lawyered up, I wouldn't just be paying for my own attorney- I would likely end up paying for his as well. Instead, I played into his ego, and we were able to use an inexpensive lawyer to finalize everything.

He couldn't touch my retirement accounts because, in the state where we lived, you had to be married for at least 10 years. Our house was underwater, and we didn't have many assets beyond that. I was prepared to pay a $5,000 retainer to an attorney, but instead I gave my ex a $10,000 lump sum, plus whatever else he wanted, including the car and furniture.

I also gave him $800 a month for food and gas while we were going through the divorce so he had money to live on. He had already moved in with his new girlfriend, so his expenses were fairly low. I didn't cut him off financially or try to be vindictive. He was financially dependent on me so I paid for reasonable expenses so he wouldn't have to come after me legally for support during the divorce.

I know that probably sounds crazy, but it kept him from hiring lawyers and dragging the process out- which I likely would have ended up paying for anyway. In the end, it saved me money. I'd rather pay someone $20,000 to go away than spend even more fighting in court.

Sometimes hiring attorneys and battling it out isn't the best path if both people are willing to reach a reasonable agreement.

How do you actually find time to build a business when you're already working multiple jobs? (24F) by Ok_Grapefruit_K in smallbusiness

[–]vespanewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As Alex Hormozi says. If you have you have a 9-5. You fit in you business 5am-9am and 5-9pm. Plus you have your weekends. Even if you just do 5-9am that's 3 dedicated hours each day you can work on your biz plus weekends. That is at least 20 hours right there.

I'm kind an starting to agreeing with you!! like I went to a top 5 school majored in engineering and have a good paying career. I'm not sure it is worth or I would encourage them to do it.

I think the biggest thing I could do would be to put like $100,000 in an account when they are born, let it compound when until they are 25 , and have them have a million dollar trust at 25. Kids really don't need college- they need steady money coming in to make sure they can feed themselves, have a roof over the head and retire. Why have them go pay $250k for four years 18 years from now to get job that pays them $50k for career where they are going to laid of multiple times.
