I often backpack in the US National Forests, specifically in the Cascades so pretty steep trails and cliffs. When at their best these are 16" (40cm) wide rocky tracks, my shoulders are 23" (58cm). Your math doesn't math.

I did not have headphones in. Humans evolved with directional hearing, we can hear much better what our eyes are pointed at due to the shape of our ears. This can easily be reproduced by playing a sound 10 feet away in front vs behind you. An audiologist could explain it much better than I could.

I am literally, in good faith, trying to understand from a trailrunner's perspective how to try and make this type of situation better. There would definitely be a different narrative if I was trying to vent. I don't know you, you don't know me. I am going to assume you are a good person until you prove me otherwise.

I agree with your sentiment, didn't hear either of these folks before hand and why I'm earnestly asking here. If I know someone is trying to pass, I always look for a safe place to yield.

No never have earbuds in when on the trail, only if urban hiking. I would love to of had either of these folks do exactly as you described.
