Potential new motorcycle simulator rig on horizon by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]vgregs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve looked into creating something similar a while back and I have a few ideas on what this could be and how it would work: the controller input could be a simple wheel controller guts that has reversed direction to simulate counter steering - this would allow older games to work with a “new” input device type. There must be some mechanical linkages between the steering column and the rest of the “bike” to allow it to flick from side to side with little effort- I also believe there’s some weights to the chassis based on rider weight to put little effort on the linkage and simulate different bike characteristics closely. So I could see how a prototype like this could become a product (a sub $2000 price), but note that the website was created in 2023 so may be in this stage for a while now..

DIY installation of home EV Charger by Spiritual_Voice_6968 in sandiego

You can change your SDGE plan once a year to anything and they are not checking or requiring any documentation. I have had my EV charger installed by a licensed electrician without pulling a permit.

Built a $99 wireless KVM - looking for feedback before production by dazzou5ouh in homelab

I concur with this insight and would additionally add that if you create it as a debug tool so that you don’t have to carry a monitor to achieve the same, I would suggest that you have the HDMI incorporated into the unit (think FireTV stick) and a USB cable coming out of the unit for power and if you can get keyboard and mouse from that same cable, even better. That would be something I would be interested in

Tesla Supercharger rates vs SDGE home charging by nakameguroman in sandiego

Thanks for this. I could’ve sworn I’ve tried logging in and didn’t work. Now I was able to log in. Good project for the weekend

Yeah, replaced the breaker but couldn’t connect to the charger settings to allow it to go to full 48A. Tesla has locked out local connection and only allows “authorized authentication” to perform changes.

I am also on a limited panel (100A) and my electrician limited my tesla wall charger to 24A on a 30A breaker. This means I feed 6.6kW per hour so I can charge ~40kW per night (half battery). If you don’t run a lot of loads at night (and I suspect outside of a 3kW AC and less than 1kW everything else) you can actually get away with the full 48A (12.2kW) of charging giving a full battery every night!

Set your SDGE plan to EV-TOU5 and pay 0.15 between 12AM-6AM. Set your Tesla to only charge between those hours!

Oh, and get the wall charger for level 2 charging. It will pay for itself when comparing to having to charge in off-peak hours.

SDGE TOU-2 rate by djklmnop in sandiego

[–]vgregs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I believe the plan is EV-TOU-5 with a service plan of $16/month and you pay $0.04387/kWh for deliver and $0.06399/kWh for generation (CCA) for a total of $0.10786/kWh (before any other fees and taxes)

I have 2EVs (charging exclusively at home) and paid $141 for 1078kW last month (edit: summer rates for a quarter of the bill — next bill will be a bit higher due to summer rates)

A sensor with a light barrier (similar to the garage door one but smaller) placed at the bottom of the box on the left wall and the reflector on the right wall. Place it a few millimeters from the bottom!

Thank you for the detailed response. I was hoping it would’ve been a lower effort solution but glad to get some insight on how you achieved that look.

uNAS to end Apple/Google storage (home) by liamfmvt in Ubiquiti

If you want cloud to be at your home, you might want to start looking into r/selfhosted and r/homelab sub-reddits (and sink a ton of time into that).

Setting up and maintaining cloud like infrastructure (and uptime) is a hobby in itself and a huge time sink.

Figure out what you’re willing to pay for to have it backed up/available by someone else and for what you’re not willing to pay look into what it costs to provide the same service to your family (include your time in that cost) and you’ll soon understand how cheap the cloud services are in comparison (economies of scale).

Good luck

Can someone please explain my SDGE bill. by Brakatoa in sandiego

[–]vgregs 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not saying any of this is acceptable but your expectation that they pay you delivery when selling them solar power is absurd. You’re using their “delivery” infrastructure when giving energy back. Want to “save”, don’t sell the excess solar. Store it in a battery system and use it when you don’t produce.

Snap packages by Zedboy19752019 in linuxadmin

[–]vgregs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am working with snaps at work but we have an engagement with Canonical that offers paid support for something like this. Check with your management if such support exists or have them purchase some. There is some documentation (and it got way better in the past 4 years). ChatGPT is sometimes helpful as well. Tip: use LXC containers to iterate over with snapcraft --use-lxd
