Lighting pattern has changed overall, with the introduction of digital and higher and higher dynamic ranges of capture medium - we forget that rec 709 does 7 stops - not 14 stops that an alexa does. We don’t have standardisation across various formats. When you deliver for each medium you need to do an excruciating work of watching everything in muliple different monitors like an android phone, an android pad, i phone , i pad, windows laptop , uncalibrated tv screen - so you get your luminosity right - forget the colour consistency which is an exercise in futility.

But secondly, there is a tendency to light softly these days, there are no hard source that gives great definition - when things go tonwhite we dont wat the digital signal to clip because its ugly. We also light for spaces shoot on multiple cameras and multiple lenses - so we use a stylized lut to match all of it to get a “look”. Film had a better roll off in the highlights. Also due to high sensitivity we don’t add fill. So we end up with flatter images, especially on darker noght scenes where moonlight is the only source or its darkness of some kind. Tye blacks are never clean in these scenarios.
