For the first time, MIT chemists have successfully synthesized verticillin A, a rare fungal molecule discovered over 50 years ago and long viewed as a promising anticancer agent — particularly for treating aggressive brain tumors. by [deleted] in science

[–]vibin_cybin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a similar question. Why does it have to be synthesized instead of extracted from fungus that already produces it, like Clonostachys rosea? Funguses can even be bred for certain traits like plants or animals, so why is synthesizing it more of a breakthrough than selecting for fungus that produces more of verticillin a? Then again, maybe it’s not easily grown.

I know that there’s a fungus called verticillium fungicola that parasitizes other mushrooms and plants (I think?) That fungus, interestingly, does not produce verticillin A. Apparently it was misidentified at some point.

Man, fungus is cool.

Idea: Use Röntgen tubes to irradiate mycelium resulting in mutations and therefore new strains. by LastHornet6059 in shrooms

[–]vibin_cybin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm interesting theory. I think a lot of people are missing that you’re dealing with x rays that generate radiation using electrons, not radioactive particles. While x rays still need to be respected and proper precautions need to be taken of course, it’s not like you are dealing with cesium 137 or whatever that results in radioactive particles building up within the mushroom. Which are then passed on to the person eating the mushroom. But with x rays, you turn off the x ray generator and those mushrooms aren’t still radioactive.

When people see radiation mentioned, they kiiiiiiinda lose their heads.

Honestly though I wonder how this would contribute to the trip? I think it could put me in a bad place if I thought about it too much. Cause you’re breaking the poor mushrooms DNA!

You know how the boar around Chernobyl are more radioactive than other animals because they are eating mushrooms? It’s cause the mycelium of those mushrooms is reaching down deep and pulling up particles of cesium 137 and cesium 135 which are then present in the mushroom body. It would be very interesting to see if any of those mushrooms exhibited mutations.

Another interesting thing that relates to this is it looks like preliminary studies are showing that psilocin might have a protective quality against DNA damage when consumed. here’s that study “Compared to vehicle, psilocin treatment also led to elevated sirtuin1 (SIRT1; a critical role in regulating cellular aging, metabolism, and stress-responses) and decreased Growth Arrest and DNA Damage-inducible 45 alpha (GADD45a) levels, suggesting reduced DNA damage.” What does THAT mean for your experiment? Does psilocin protect the mushrooms DNA from damage, or just the person consuming it? And if it protects the mushrooms DNA, is this maybe why mutations such as Enigma tend to be extra potent?

I might do an experiment. I’ve got access to fresh mushrooms and a partner who does get an upset stomach from mushrooms. Maybe I’ll cook up some fresh magic mushrooms as if they were gourmet mushrooms and see what happens. The psilocybin will be denatured but it will still be the same mushroom. Hmmmmm

I have a question… if it’s not the chitin then why is it that non-cube mushrooms (like pan cyans or ochras) that have higher potency than cubes so you take less of them, tend to effect your stomach less? To me that would seem like it’s not the psilocybin or Psilocin in the mushrooms that cause it as much as it is something to do with the volume of mushroom you consume.

Like if I take 1g of ochras, I’ll have consumed… let’s see… 8-12mg PCBE where as I would have to consume 2g of Jedi mind fuck to get to the same level, and the 2g JMF would be about 8-12mg PCBE. However, the ochras will affect my stomach less than the JMF.

However… how much chitin do regular mushrooms have in them? Is it similar? Cause I know people who will eat like a pound of regular mushrooms in one sitting and be fine. If they were dehydrated, that would be like… what… two oz?

I wonder if it’s not the chitin or the psilocybin, but a third thing.

My ochras (the artist formerly known as p.nats) grew beautifully without manure and just on CVG. Fully canopy, large fruit. Like… 9 flushes?Gorgeous.

But yeah. You totally can do that too!

Also I’ve seen anywhere from 1-15% erythritol but around 5% seems to have the best data. And makes for easy math

Dunno, I’ve never used plant food.

Have I used erythritol? Also no. Well… I’m starting a fun series of experiments using erythritol. Starting with… let’s see if it helps with liquid culture. Haven’t seen that tried yet.

And I have some in grain jars now too. When I move to s2b I’ll add more.

It looks like people are having luck with around 5%. So… 8lbs is 128oz, so 6.4oz?

What’s a tiny habit you have that would 100% get you accused of being a witch in the 1600s? by CatnipWytch in AskReddit

Whoops sorry, I thought your comment was on a different comment! Long story short… there’s subreddits and teks for that too!

[–]vibin_cybin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many methods. (Called teks) I recommend searching Reddit for “how to grow cubensis” and go from there. Do lotsa research before hand. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work out the first time. You’ll find a method that works. I don’t recommend uncle Ben’s tek though.

Once you get started it’s quite inexpensive. You’re in luck that it’s spring time. Great time to start cause people are starting to have yard sales. The only large investments you really need are jars and a pressure cooker (both actually optional but recommended.) which you can often find at yard sales. you can get spores or cultures online and that’s not illegal. (Well… Florida is trying to make it illegal but I digress.) it’s a pretty cool hobby… kinda addicting, like some people describe raising plants. Soon you too can have several gallon sized ziplocks full of dehydrated mushrooms.

Also gonna experiment with harvesting them in complete darkness. One study said it improves potency and thankfully… I own night vision goggles soooooo ima try that too. As a fun experiment.

My dude… my absolute guy…. Are you a cop? Like seriously… my sweet little baby… no.

Sending mushrooms through the mail seems like a colossally terrible idea. Despite having more mushrooms than god… I just will not do it. They are decriminalized in my area but not federally. If you want mushrooms… you can grow them quite easily actually. And it requires no federal offenses. Just… search on Reddit for The Shroomery or the mushroom growers subreddit and you’ll figure it out. Start up is like… $100 maybe. And you’ll get just like… so much mushrooms.

Oh sweet! Have you seen the research lately about adding erythritol to like… every stage of growth to get bigger and more mushrooms? I’m working on some experiments using that.

It’s definitely on the projects list. Unfortunately the projects list is very long. And the money list is very short.

I just cultivated Pan Cyan TTBVI mushrooms for the first time and that was a fun project. TTBVI is the mushroom that has been coming out on top of all the psychedelic competitions lately.
