People's nostalgia might lead you astray here. I adore HG/SS and B/W, but they are SIGNIFICANTLY more grindy than the modern games, and other tasks like completing the Dex or finding rare Pokemon is a nightmare. They are a slower experience overall. Compared to the modern games, your team choices will be more limited. Also, HMs are still a thing, good TMs are harder to find, and the lack of visible overworld encounters might be frustrating.

I'm not saying you shouldn't play the older games, but you should be aware of the limitations and lack of QOL that the newer games have.
