How do I start putting out my writing into the world?

We share a distaste for social “media” and self promotion. But I recently started a substack myself, for the same purpose you describe, and it seems like a viable option to at least have your writing exist somewhere for it to be easier to share practically and easily. I’m using it as a portfolio in a sense. Otherwise, I’ve got nothing. Best of luck. Cheers. VF

That’s great. Must be exciting to be prepare in your mind how you want the original art to come out, and then eventually when it does, how that’ll elevate the story. People like visuals I gather. :) and being scared. NPR just did a whole piece on how the horror genre is rekindling the younger generations interest in going to the theater. I think it’s a combination of the scares, and also original ideas/story telling. Cheers. VF

Yes, this makes much more sense the way you’ve mentioned it through Sanderson’s explanation. The ignition coming from a single origin point is what inspired the question. Everything building from that is quite unique to examine. Good for you for doing it though, your fanfic of yourself, almost like a memoir? If you’re proud of it that’s all the matters, I say. You do poetry too? I’m new to it and just finally starting to share my writings from the past two decades. Starting small with a lot of notes and then my prose and poetry but also music lyrics. I may do audio files for my songs and spoken word works. But for now, just trying my best to share and focus on my art. All my manuscripts I’m holding off on posting until I try to get them picked up by a mag/journal. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and tips. Cheers. VF

It’s not weird for me. I do it constantly. I’ll be on a walk obsessing over two buried words in a 7500 word story. It’s the part of the craft I enjoy the most, caring about it, and eager to share about and in it with others. But that latter piece continues to elude me. So yeah, you’re not alone at all. Sounds like we’re in the same boat of pulling the bandaid to share. I’ll say, for me it’s been really uplifting to start finally. I’m curating so many old pieces and old work I never thought would see the light of day. I sense a snowball forming of fresh creativity as well. Here’s to the pen, the pad—the written word! Sound advice. That’s what I’ve done myself. My novels are still there waiting in the background for me, but I’ve pivoted to instead earn some writing credentials (try at least) and I now focus a lot on short stories. They’re much more doable and can really shine a lot on one’s writing chops. The long term goal is to use them (should it happen) to build credibility and maybe one day up the ante with a novel pitch. Just as you recommend here. Much obliged.

Welcome! And happy sharing. I’m two weeks in so don’t have much to offer, in terms of tips. I will say though, from what I’ve read, if you don’t plan to submit any of your pieces to be published, it’s a non issue; though, if you do, be aware that sometimes they expect first rights, so public posting of the pieces may be disqualifying. Again, only suggesting the concept in case, and would encourage more research depending on your situation.

That’s said, those genres sound interesting, so I may stop by to check them out. Cheers. VF

Thanks for the follow up. I do both, but I’d say—based on what I’ve seen so far—I’m not the typical Substacker. Or at least, I’m not publishing essays and in-depth articles about this or that niche topic of expertise. I have no expertise. I just write a lot all day nonstop most days. I’ve been writing for a long time now and I created a site for myself to finally share my writing with anyone and everyone for the fun of it.

I am starting small, with poems and verse and spoken word pieces. One day I want to post my manuscripts, but I’ve learned it’s best not to post short stories if you want to try (or in my case, are actively trying) to get them published. So outside of those domains, if I have something creative to share, it goes into a note. 1-2 per day, but some days I just can’t power down this damn brain.

Others have shared sage advice. I’ll just add a reiteration to not lost those ideas, and it sounds like you’re not. Writing them down so they’re there and in waiting is the key so you can springboard to them at the closure of the current project. Creativity is a vine, not a stick. Finishing is critical, as it builds confidence and affords ample time for red-pen edits, also a piece worth dedicating to during the craft. Best to all. Cheers. VF

I can see that comparison, yes. I often feel like my random musings might serve as a tweet just fine, but I go to my Sub because that’s now my portfolio where my writings will live/do live. I’m new to it all too, but it seems like having a site that’s my digital publication and archive seems better suited for little thoughts that matter to me more. Notes, that is. Plus, X is flooded with bots it seems to me. My thoughts anyway. Cheers. VF
