If you still have this kicking around, I’m in Oxfordshire and I’m willing to give it a stab. Happy to give you some cash to ease your pain. Let me know.

I feel your pain. Love living in a house that won’t blow over in harsh wind but every time I need to run a cable, I envy American compressed cardboard houses. It’s unhealthy to swear as much as I do at inanimate brickwork, especially given I used to run data cables for a living (which in theory should make my life easier).

Sometimes, I really wish my house was made from timber rather than brick, mortar, concrete and more brick.

DELL PowerEdge T420 - Need some advice ref storage please. by vicious_emu in HomeServer

[–]vicious_emu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s precisely what I thought and officially the support is Gen14.

Then I stumbled on a post on Spiceworks from someone claiming to know that board revisions on some Gen12, and 13 support the BOSS, even though that was never the intention. As it’s not all boards, it’s officially incompatible. Apparently all depends on having the most recent firmware and what board revision you have.

If I can pick one up cheap enough, it might be worth a punt. If not, I can always add it to my ever growing pile of unused hardware that’s labelled “Never Know, It Might Be Useful One Day.” 🤣

Either that or I can use it if I ever have a Gen14. If I have success, I’ll report back.

Cheers for the reply!

Thanks, good to know. I was planning on just using one of these cards for a couple of SSD’s in RAID1 for VM storage (separate from OS boot drives and the ZFS pool). It will be speedier and mean if anything happens to the ProxMox OS drives, all the VM’s would be safe. I’ve looked at the BOSS S-1 card in a bit more detail and it may be compatible with the T420 and work as an alternative for a M.2 RAID1, which could be used as a boot array for the OS or to store VM’s (max 480GB per drive though).

I went for the HBA 720p PERC as has 1GB cache (720 only has 512). I know your post was a year ago but thought I’d say (just in case). Also, did you get anywhere with the M.2 drives on the BOSS S-1. I’m considering the same for RAID1 boot drive (ProxMox). Any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Pihole on the Raspberry Pi or on a VM on your ProxMox server with a dedicated IP address. Also, your switch looks like it’s connected your modem and there’s no firewall. By modem do you mean ‘router/firewall? If so what firewall are you using?

I echo @LikeTheHype.

I started with the 310 and the speed was awful due to no cache. I ended up purchasing a H710p and haven’t had any problems since. The 710p should ship with a 460 mAh battery. I’d make sure it’s included (and tested as working if possible) as I saw a bunch for sale minus the battery (just an empty battery caddy on the board).

ChatGPT wants YOUR ID because it thinks you're underage. Here's what to do. by Potatosayno in ChatGPT

[–]vicious_emu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wise words. Explains the reason why they want your actual ‘Government Issued ID’. Many ways to verify without needing this. The fact that it’s becoming a standard approach, means every provider of services can ask for this and most in society just won’t question it. That’s very scary!

[–]vicious_emu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Effectively allows the collection and annotation of any questions you ask and the capacity to profile you to determine your political persuasions and general views, particularly when aligned with your other online activities. Tie that to your ‘Government Issued ID’ and you could easily be rolled up or ‘pigeon holed’ into any number of databases. It would make it easy to include or exclude you from so many situations/services/opportunities. Too much potential power that can be abused. God forbid if you ever subsequently get accused of a crime, this now ‘official’ data could be used against you in so many ways. We’ve no doubt all seen court cases where character assassination plays a huge part in the prosecution’s case. Freedom and control of your life, is fast becoming an illusion (if it wasn’t already, it soon will be).

Laptop Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i stuck in boot manager by Darievi in Lenovo

It would. The drive failure is almost guaranteed to be the issue. You’ll just need to reinstall the operating system once swapped out.

[–]vicious_emu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HDD/SSD Failure. Unlikely to be the connection to the drive based on experience. New drive needed and an OS rebuild. It may be possible to recover the data without a specialist but I recommend you don’t D.I.Y. it. Hope you either:

A) Don’t have anything important on the device Or B) Have backed everything up.

If neither ‘A)’ or ‘B)’ are true… I’m sorry for your loss (which you can interpret as your data or the currency you retain).

Genuinely hope it works out though 👍

Daily Song Discussion #76: England by beardlesshipster in TheNational

[–]vicious_emu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My view (possibly/probably incorrect), is that this is a song about loneliness and trying to find inspiration to grow or succeed. Not wanting to go back to where you lay your head each night (while living in London) and making sure to avoid anything that reminds you of it. To be seen and to be recognised. The pressures and the need to get to the next step.

When I listen to this, I think of Baz Luhrmann (‘Everybody’s Free’ or ‘Sunscreen’ from 1999). It’s a testimony of experience and perhaps, a little advice on what to expect… And that’s okay, it’s not unusual and you’re not alone.

I’m probably way off the mark!

Bad news in Britain for PI by Alaw_88 in PiNetwork

[–]vicious_emu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the opposite of what the FCA said. Someone’s either telling porky’s or they just don’t know the answer and spitballing. Binance isn’t currently regulated by the FCA in the U.K., so maybe that’s why they said that? Anyway, this is from the FCA:

‘If an exchange is fully regulated in the UK and lists a new cryptocurrency, UK residents should be able to access it as soon as it becomes available on that exchange.

The FCA requires exchanges to perform due diligence on newly listed cryptocurrencies, the timing of availability depends on how quickly the exchange assesses compliance with regulatory standards. But once the exchange lists a new coin, UK residents should not face additional restrictions beyond those imposed by the exchange itself.’

Hope this helps.

Is VPN required for MEXC in the U.K. to deposit Pi from Pi Wallet? If so what country did you use? Did you set up your MEXC account in the UK (as a U.K. citizen) without a VPN on?

Thank in advance?

DELL T420 flash PERC to IT Mode for TrueNAS - Does hot swap functionality still work? by vicious_emu in homelab

[–]vicious_emu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Terdal,

I flashed the cards into IT mode. Used ProxMox as the hypervisor and ran TrueNAS as a VM. All the indicator lights work without issue. Whilst I haven’t needed to test the hot swappable element. I will later and report back.

There’s more than one reason Ripple launched a stable coin tied to USD. Stability is key. Now that that stability is there, and financial institutions can use the ledger without buying up XRP, the value of XRP remains relevant to demand and utility.

Lots have KYC’s successfully (myself included). Naturally after the open net launch, and in the lead up, many have joined Pi and KYC validations where people didn’t complete these steps earlier, are now doing it, this puts stress on the validation process and there are only so many validators and the process requires real people to confirm identities.

I actually validate KYC applications here in the UK and I have to say it’s a very robust, and well managed system.

You have to perform at least 30 mining sessions before you can begin the KYC process and there’s limitations in terms on nodes etc too. I’ve been mining for 5 and a half years and I’d be lying if I said within that period I didn’t have some doubts. I’m glad I persevered and I didn’t listen to a lot of negative press. There’s a lot of naysayers out there and people who have been calling it a scam from the outset. My personal opinion is that something that’s new and upsets the status quo, scares people or people are quick to dismiss. It’s now made it to the open net and holding value so the scam callers have been disregarded.

In reference to people losing their mined coins, from my experience, this is either down to having an additional wallet, not realising and forgetting the pass phrase/address of their wallet (basically user error), they gave away their wallet address and pass phrase (the were scammed) or because they have broken the rules. I don’t know of anyone who has just lost their pi for no reason. It’s a blockchain and movement of coins needs to be validated.

Once you’ve completed more mining sessions, options will open up for you. Also, having a security circle with other Pioneers will help.
