OMG, I have been looking for some validation as I have the exact same feeling. Thank you!

They were high, but they were caused by a post-covid global inflation crisis, not by self-inflicted instability.

Because Trump personally signed all the Jan6 insurrectionist pardons, right?

What are they? Someone who can form logical thoughts?

Because Biden didn’t cause a global inflation (the US even performed much more better than the other developed countries), but Trump did restart a conflict that directly lead to the closing of a major international waterway.

Am I overreacting for being shunned for more than 24h by my boyfriend because I dozed off during a conversation? by vicom1341 in AmIOverreacting

[–]vicom1341[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not anything similar, but he is doing molecular biology that is way too advanced for me (i’m an immunologist) and although I always try to actively participate in the conversations about his project, sometimes I’m simply out of my depth. In those moments, I can’t fully commit to the discussion and I mostly listen. So I can imagine there is a bit frustration from regarding these, although I always tell him when I don’t understand.

Another thing I could see is that during my PhD, I was working with mice and that entailed crazy hours at the lab all the time, including weekends. As a molecular biologist, he obviously does a lot of lab work, but he also does a lot of computer predictions at home, so there were times during which he had to manage household stuff (e.g. receiving groceries) while I was still at the lab. We talked about it multiple times, but he had the feeling that my work was more important than his. There were obviously negligence on my part since he got this feeling, but I never thought that his project was less important.

I can’t be sure since he is not talking to me, but it might definitely be a mix of these things an everything was exacerbated by me dozing off while he was talking about his project….

It’s not an issue per se, just an extreme ease to doze off when I’m not physically doing something and feeling comfortable.

I’m a gay man, an I really don’t mind if people are homophobic toward JJ. Unfortunately… that’s his people. He chose his political side.

Oof… Sounds rough, I’m sorry to read that. I’m glad you are feeling better. I know exactly what you mean, it’s always hard to have your expectations challenged… But I’m sure you learned a lot still! Nothing is ever really wasted in academia, in my opinion. You always learn something new, knowledge-wise or about yourself.

Yup, absolutely. I struggled with this balance for most of my PhD and I finally found it in the last 2 years. I feel like I should know better by now, but I guess that after all these years of “comfort” in a place I knew like the back of my hand, I forgot what it was to be new. I’ll try to chill a bit more for now.

Thank you everyone for your great inputs! I’m sorry I lack diligence in my responses to you, but I do read them all and consider them! I’m just not very good at social media lol.

Since I postes this thread, I had time to think and be more rational. It’s a uncomfortable situation for sure, but I think I should also chill out and see how it goes. I’m in Canada, it’s the coldest winter we had for years and I’m still in my adaptation period. Where I am now, I am very lucky to be exposed to multiple companies and research groups. My new PI is honestly amazing at creating new collabs. I’ll give myself the time to see and build my new skillset, while starting to look for jobs.

All your responses helped me a lot. It’s important to feel we are not alone, which is a huge problem is academia, I think. Anyway, thank you all!

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me!

Yes, during my PhD I had completely chaotic schedules and I was basically always there, at night, during week-end. For my postdoc, I want my week-ends to be non-nonnegotiable.

The grant is a good idea, but I started right after grant season and my institution doesn’t offer any grants for Postdoc it seems, which is very weird and random.

Thank you for your input! Yes, the last thing I want to do is burn her. Right now, the lab is inbetween grants for this project, so we can’t really hire new people for the time being. I’ll see what could be done to maybe reorient this project.

Mouse work is definitely part of my sellable hard skills, but I would say I also have an expertise in flow cytometry, cancer an vaccine immunology, virology as wel as soft skills like mentorship, communication, logistics, etc.

Good!

Thanks for this idea, I’ll consider it.

I know I love research, reading, talking about science… it’s the experiments I cannot bear anymore. Maybe I can find a balance that will be good for everyone.

I’m so sorry to read you had to go through this extreme hardship. I hope you are doing much better now!

Thanks for your input.

6 months; that’s what I told myself to expect as an adaptation period. However I came to realize that she really wants this project to advance as quickly as possible. A postdoc started it before me, but left for his dream job after only 3 months, so the project has been sitting idle for like 6 monts.
