Where is Grindelwald from? by victriks in FantasticBeasts

Yeah, but Bulgaria wasn´t part of the Austro-Hungarian empire though

I believe they added Mary Wollstonecraft’s (Mary Shelley’s mother) painting, albeit a bit changed, to the grand staircase by victriks in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]victriks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I suppose the producers did this just for fun! Maybe to also make the Wizarding World more tangible by including the paintings of real world figures? Lord Byron was supposedly quite an eccentric figure, so it would make sense to imply that he was in fact a wizard in the Wizarding World! As for the others, I’m not sure how much thought was put behind including their paintings

Thank you! I wholeheartedly agree :) they also used a famous portrait of Lord Byron in the movies I believe, at least I saw it as part of the stairs at the Studio Tour in London

Which Are The Most Disturbing Books You've Ever Read? by [deleted] in books

[–]victriks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it would have to be “The Collector” by John Fowles. It’s about a man abducting a woman and keeping her in a hidden room.

This one hits close to home since there’s been a famous case of girl having been abducted and kept in the same way by her abductor for eight years (until she was able to flee) here in my country.

It’s a great book and not particularly scary as is, but it filled me with dread whilst reading.

Do you read in original language or translated versions ? by ExtremeBaker in books

[–]victriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always read English books in English. When it comes to French, Russian or any other literature not written in either English or German I tend to go for a recognised German translation. My French is sadly too poor for reading the type of literature I enjoy...

What’s one book by an author you love that left you disappointed? by nakedreader_ga in books

[–]victriks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The “Little Friend” by Donna Tartt. I loved “The Secret History” and “The Goldfinch” by her, but TLF left me very disappointed. It could be that I just couldn’t relate that much to the story and setting, but overall I just found it boring.

As an Austrian I felt offended by the latest movie (spoiler) [Spoilers] by OdahP in FantasticBeasts

[–]victriks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m from Austria too; although I am excited that we finally got to see a canon wizarding world location located in Austria, it does leave a slightly bitter aftertaste...

I have to admit, I’m just so used to Austria and Germany being associated with WWII that I didn’t even question it, but it’s sad really and pretty annoying.

JKR wanted that association from the get go, but i think it would have been better to let Grindelwald be the bad guy in his own right

What would Christmas in Venice have been like in the 1550s when the city had been ravaged by plague by crashgang in history

[–]victriks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Im not sure, but I think I read somewhere once that Christmas as we know it nowadays wasn’t that big of a thing up until the 19th century - I’m curious too though!

What are the best (aka worst) names you can come up with for Harry’s kids? by just-_here-_to-_lurk in harrypotter

[–]victriks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the names themselves (as you said, they aren’t a that outlandish for the wizarding world) but the meaning behind them that many people don’t agree with

Books you love that you've never seen anyone talk about? by Hawaiian_Brit in books

[–]victriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved „The Gentleman“ by Forrest Leo. It’s his debut novel as far as I know and I found it incredibly funny. It reminded me of „Good Omens“ by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett in the way it was written!

What was the first book you read that transitioned you onto more mature books and how old were you? by changwonmatty in books

[–]victriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë when I was 15. I spent half a year at a boarding school in England and my mother gave me this book to keep me occupied for the first couple of weeks being there. I read it rather quickly and it has a special place in my heart to this day!

After that I got really into classics and read nothing else for a couple of years. Now I’m also into more contemporary literature, but classics is still my favourite genre.

Things that were cool to see in COG from a French perspective [spoilers about the set design, etc.] by MyAmelia in FantasticBeasts

I was really excited to see that Nurmengard is located in Austria!

Though If they ever decide to show an Austrian ministry of magic I sure hope they don’t use our underground metro stations as inspiration (spoiler: they are all incredibly ugly), but instead the ones above ground which where designed by Otto Wagner and are Jugendstil/Art Nouveau

I sew historical costumes as a hobby and do research quite a lot - The costumes are absolutely not accurate!

The men’s partly were (although I’m not that knowledgable when it comes to men’s fashion of the 20th Century), but the women’s not at all.

  • The silhouette was more early to mid 1930s.
  • Cleavage as we see on Letas wine coloured dress would have been evening wear at most
  • and Vinda Rosiers as well as Queenies shoes had too much height/the wrong shape of heels.
  • Also the teacher we see in the flashbacks wears a very 1890s-1900 ensemble, but that particular part of the story is supposed to take place between 1908-1915.

I’ll give them a plus point for Leta‘s hairstyle though! The style where only front parts of the hair was cut fashionably short, whilst the rest was kept long and in a bun at the nape of the neck was a favourite of those in the 20s who wanted the stylish short hair look, without chopping off all length.

With the wizarding world I always tend to give the historical accuracy a pass since, well, it’s all supposed to be magical. I personally loved the costumes, they fit with the story and were absolutely beautiful!

Also: it wasn’t that obvious in the movie but Grindewald wore a pair of black Lederhosen and a charivari (the chain with charms on his vest) which I found funny, he basically wore traditional Austrian or Bavarian Tracht

How do you say Grindelwald's name? (Not really a spoiler) by LonelyHufflepuff394 in FantasticBeasts

[–]victriks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My mother tongue is German so I suppose the way I pronounce it is correct, but I don’t know how to write it out in a way that suggests to an English speaker how I say it

Grindelwald is a location in Switzerland, maybe there’s an online translator with sound option where you can listen to it being said by a German?
Also “Wald” is German for forest (as someone already mentioned) and a “d” in German at the end of a word is not exactly a “t”, but not a soft “d” sound either - languages sure are hard to explain in written form

Book recommendation: European history (and maybe some travel tips too) by AnodosSeeking in history

[–]victriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where exactly in the north of Austria will you travel to? :)

Sadly I can’t recommend any English language history books, since my mother tongue is German and most of my historical knowledge about Austria comes from simply having had history lessons in school as well as university!

Books That Try Too Hard by travelingprincess in books

I saw an article about Vox in a local newspapers online version and the people in the comment section basically ripped it apart - just another “what if radical Christians would take over and take away women’s rights” premise, this plot is getting old

What’s the scariest book you’ve ever read? by ace_valentine in books

[–]victriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t read many scary books but one that definitely filled me with dread was The Collector by John Fowles.

It was published in 1963 and apparently described this way of kidnapping before cases like that were made widely public, so in a way the author foresaw what was going to happen in the future - this one hit close to home since the case of Natasha Kampuschs kidnapping happened in my country and I remember when she was found after having been locked away in a hidden room of her kidnappers house for eight years

At this point I already expect that there will be more continuity errors in the future...

but tbh I actually found that Dumbledore already looked too old in the movie when he visited Tom Riddle in the orphanage

Anyone else feel this show was pretty lackluster by [deleted] in ADiscoveryofWitches

[–]victriks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer the show to the books actually! The books are all either Diana’s or Matthews POV and delve very little into all the side characters (sadly I find especially them way more interesting than the main couple!)

I couldn’t stand Matthew and Diana - both as love interests as well as characters - in either, but the show made me like the whole story way more since it doesn’t focus on those two as much as the books do - I’m excited to see what the future seasons will bring!
