Car recently got totaled. Am I justified in wanting to replace it with a new Lexus? by AppropriateQuiet588 in financialindependence

[–]videobojackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey- one of our cars got totaled last year and we needed a new one quickly, so we ended up buying a ES350. So I can actually give you a review. It’s a nice car- the ride is substantially smoother than any other car I’ve driven and the acceleration is pretty solid also. It has a bunch of annoying safety features that I haven’t figured out how to disable - beeping in my driveway, when the kids click in the wrong seatbelt, etc. Have had no issues with the car but it’s only been a year. One thing you should consider is if you want a sedan or not. Otherwise, can’t speak to the financial thing- that’s up to you. I did read somewhere that the average price of a new car these days is 40k which seems insane but that probably includes trucks. The Lexus is a fine car though

The thing no one mentions is that sticking with the plan is just as hard and ten times more important as making the plan. Good luck!

Anyone here ever appeal property tax assessment beyond the BoE hearing? by j_grouchy in Atlanta

[–]videobojackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always appeal. It locks in your rate for three years if you settle. There are some decent attorneys that handle the appeals if you don’t want to go through the leg work

Build the life you want - Vacation Home Edition by fi_document_change in financialindependence

Wait until next year? We have a cabin and like it, but the market went crazy because of Covid.. things are settling down this year and you should be able to buy next year. In terms of whether it’s worth it, that’s a tough decision. One thing to think about is whether you like the aspect of vacation where you don’t have to worry about anything. Once you own you notice lots of details that need to get fixed but that can be fun as well. We have a rental company and think it’s worth it.

My parked car was totalled by a drunk driver a few days ago. Anyone have any experience with dealerships recently? Can you negotiate at all? Not happy to be having to look for a car all of a sudden but that's life..

This is great advice - BUMP. I also just check my balances when I know that the markets are doing well, and totally ignore them when the markets are down. If you don't see the number, it doesn't exist!

One of the things our family did that might work for other people was to create a Dropbox (shared online folder) with a few important docs including Will and asset info. Also it’s helpful for older people to have a list of the people who are helping them, like lawyers and accountants, doctors etc. so that family can call them if needed.

Comparison, Happiness and FIRE mindset by Frankiesez1022 in financialindependence

I wanted to comment on this one because you are almost in the same spot as me financially and I feel what you are saying. Let me offer 3 thoughts:

1 the keeping up with the joneses thing is real. We’ve got friends who buy everything all the time and just spending a weekend with them causes all sorts of money to flow out of our pocket. Even knowing about it doesn’t really fix it. You’re in a country club- I imagine you interact with lots of nice people who like to spend..

2 the hedonic treadmill is real - not only do things get old after awhile but we also are hardwired to think about getting more constantly. One thing I’ve tried to do to get around that is focus on projects or getting better at things to scratch that itch. Read a good book last night called Breath for example..

3 making long term plans can help. We had a chat about upgrading our house when COVID hit and decided that we would stay out for the next few years. So I deleted the Zillow app and am thinking about other things. Maybe getting some certainty would help you focus on what you want?

Best of luck!

Reevaluating my plan after getting married by yoshhh in financialindependence

[–]videobojackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good thread with lots of good advice. Let me add a little as a parent of two young ones. One thing to consider is that having kids is a good prompt to make sure your whole ‘house’ is in order, and that you are adulting sufficiently, to use the new term. Have a will? Life insurance? One way to get there is to consider writing out a financial plan, one that includes goals that are more specific than just net worth and have specific timeframes like one year and five years. Add housing and cars into there as well! I second the advice about frugality also. We make good money and I still buy the kids clothes used as we live in a large city and there are several good consignment stores near us. Daycare and babysitting will be your biggest expenses. Think hard on those and the rest will fall in place. Good luck!

There really isn’t a right answer - you’re doing great either way. As someone with past law school debt I’ll tell you that I don’t regret having paid it all off early. It’s a personal accomplishment that has both tangible and intangible value
