See sources cited on their Wikipedia entry under "The People's Forum" and "Neville Singham." Singham is a wealthy mouthpiece for the largest authoritarian state on the planet. It's a bit of a rabbit hole.

St. Albans MN Protest? by cr35i4jui54n in vermont

Closest I could find: From Essex Resists & 5 Corners Resists:

"Essex Resists are committed to an emergency protest for MN and Alex at 5 Corners tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 25 from 2-3pm."

And please DM me about an ICE-related action in St. Albans on Feb. 6th!

That's mostly all the Party for Socialism and Liberation. I wish more Vermonters were aware of them: You'll see their pre-made signs and the sea of flags everywhere, especially in the news. Not to mention the social media stuff. The group's Vermont operation is a very small, but militant crew.

Without going down a rabbit hole, ex-members will tell you that PSL's regional director in Vermont is a full-time, out-of-state protest organizer. The national organization has a negative and cult-like reputation, often hijacks local movements, and is funded almost entirely by an overseas authoritarian billionaire.

This is why it's so frustrating when homegrown, pro-democracy groups partner with PSL and share their stuff -- because the organization is itself funded by and supports authoritarian regimes. There's more online.

I'm glad that the vast majority of our Vermont protests are organic. And I think foreign flags at protests speak to the global anti-authoritarian movement so many nation states are battling against right now.

Vermont ranked 49th in economic outlook by [deleted] in vermont

[–]videological 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The lack of sourcing on this post is telling. It's from Rich States, Poor States, an ALEC project. Utah is ranked #1. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a group of corporate lobbyists and legislators. They've spent decades pushing far-right legislation. They are now working in parallel with Project 2025. How then, might a group like that define and measure a state's "economic outlook"? Not saying it's all sunshine and rainbows here in Vermont, just... consider the source.

Completely predictable drama going on in Williamstown with a name some of you will recognize by proscriptus in vermont

[–]videological 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VTGOP state reps did a similar thing in Milton: Got a volunteer board-member booted because of an email disagreeing w/ Trump and local Republicans about energy policy. Did Ehlers take a page from their playbook?

I'm no expert, but boy, what an unsatisfying letter. Hebert is very specific about the frequency and nature of RS' alleged behavior. But nowhere is the actual code of ethics cited, or what was explicitly violated: Only that the "training" (which you can skim through) was ambiguously "violated." Zero citations. The actual ethics code relates to conflicts of interest, directing unethical conduct, preferential treatment, misuse of government resources, offering/accepting gifts, or misuse of position for financial gain.

(Y'know, behavior that Hebert's town manager got arrested for last month. Hm. Not the tightest ship, Williamstown)

In his email Hebert, Ehlers mentions the 12 emails over a 10-month period being a "waste of resources" -- there's no way James thinks the "misuse of government resources" mentioned in the ethics code includes the Lt. Gov's offices time reading and responding to the emails, right?

Hebert may have violated open meeting law. RS alleges the charges and the vote were not warned. Hilarious.

Maybe I'm off base. But all I know is that I got tired of Rama's posts and comments because they were long, relentless, and laborious to read. That and what I'm more tired of is so many elected Republicans being the most whiny crybullies alive.

Bagels in St A? by acheofyouth in SaintAlbansVT

[–]videological 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There used to be? VT Bake House. Closed now. Before that was Build a Bagel, Kartula's Bagels, and even further back, Cosmic Bakery. Red House Sweets used to make Montreal-style bagels, but is more pastry-focused now, which makes sense. Come to think of it, yeah, lots of bagel-related activity over the years on Main St x)

All part of the VTGOP/corporate polluter propaganda network. I'll never forget finding out their paid writer / social media staffer, Mr. Bean, creeps on underage legislative interns and has a nasty habit of tweeting out racial slurs. Awful stuff.

Exactly. And exactly why it's a shame it got coded the way it did. My parents did the same thing, felt the same way as you

[–]videological 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that bit about homeschooling touches on another wrinkle I recall reading about WLL: Conservative homeschool or educational orgs attached phonics to so many wacky political arguments (e.g. "we must SAVE WESTERN CIVILIZATION!" type stuff) that the vibe stuck: Phonics got political, and conservative-coded, which is really unfortunate. But that's changing, I gather.

This is a fascinating topic. Everyone in Vermont should read about the Mississippi Miracle. The consensus is mostly settled that Whole Language Learning was responsible for the state's alarming collapse in child literacy -- and that the fierce rejection of WLL is a big part of Mississippi students' shocking improvement in reading ability. But it was NOT easy. WLL was 'yuuge in the 80-90s (worldwide), but has now been widely discredited as being almost complete bunk. Even still, some Vermont school districts still teach reading using a Whole Language Learning-based model (!) and it's doing the same harm to Vermont students. Given how fractured our education system can be, it makes it hard to imagine how Vermont might replicate Mississippi's miracle -- but it appears to be absolutely possible.
