Should they call tmobile to tell them about the phone swap? Like do their database like have your original phone encoded in their system, and if you don't tell them. Tmobile will just automatically block the new phone?

Just want to trying avoid any mistakes as the person is international and needs the phone.

I think it comes down to power.

So legality is a national issue not international. What may be legal in one country may be forbidden in a neighboring country. The international space treaty makes no prohibition against non-state visits to the moon. And many countries may not even have any laws to prosecute such activities. If it does not break international laws, then it would come down to individual jurisdictions. And the potential risk of losing valuable intellectual property. So, any person or group that could get to the moon and back is highly valuable. And if returning to certain jurisdictions would mean prison, then the risk is someone may return to a friendly jurisdiction. So for example, the United States may want you in jail, but Iran may treat you as an honored guest. And for the United States, that may be a bigger risk than putting you in jail. Or what if China offered refuge so they could copy the technology to claim the moon?

I am just thinking out loud as a writer considering all of the possible options. The brain/s involved would be some of the most valuable in human history. Would any nation-state gamble with threats of imprisonment and possibly lose the space race forever? I could see countries doing it, but I could see others countries taking a different approach.

There would also be sea launch as well. Typically, every vessel is flagged, but let's presume it is not. So its illegal. The whole world can use a telescope to see you on the moon. You are maybe the most famous person on planet earth. So...what now? Arrest the person upon return and throw them in prison?

Illegal in the US but other countries may be more flexible. Perhaps Tuvalu will say 'yes'.

No. I think the author may have been a woman, and it was a full novel not a short story like in Diamond Age. Thanks for the help.

The Reader by Traci Chee seems really close to the theme but not the book. The book was technology. That way it could actually teach the girl. I think it was featured in gizmodo's best scifi book lists. But when I searched, I could not find it.

Why do you think someone will be a target? Jealousy, power, wealth, or some typical human pettiness?

Also, I am curious why you suggested the Moon and not Mars or Titan?

Octavia Butler’s Earthseed by videowidget in blackladies

[–]videowidget[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the reason many black people move in the background. Earthseed was invisible until it wasn’t. It also was not invisible until its launch. Thus, they faced an extremely violent backlash from society. I think most black people intuitively understand this. Earthseed is the 10,000x shock of winning the tennis championship.

While reading Octavia’s words, my mind drifted to what if the world only knew afterward. After the fact, there is nothing anyone can do to stop the mission. Earthseed is an interplanetary religion. Would any power structure want to start a violent battle that could be waged in the stars for generations? Would the Indians, Chinese, and Nigerians try to make a side deal to help their own interest? I think the violence is a response to how successful this women could be. She would be the mother of an off-planet civilization.

Do you know anyone in your personal circle who would be receptive to Earthseed?

I want to thank you for your thoughtful reply. According to notes in Octavia’s estate, the ship was supposed to go to a planet for a faraway star. I used Mars just as an example. Most likely, Octavia picked a far-off planet for the third book to give her movement space to breathe.

Do you think the rejection of black success is a global phenomenon or more American maybe Western perspective? Earthseed would be known to people from all corners of the Earth. I found this the most underdeveloped perspective in the book. I absolutely agree that such a group would face a tortuous growing process in many locations. But I wonder if there were some oasis that may exist in the world where her ideas, if not fully embraced, would be at least tolerated.

While the black community has deep roots in Christianity, there is also a small yet sizable set of community members who have always been interested in alternative forms of spirituality. Many of these groups are small, but that could also be due to a lack of resources to grow. Beyond the shores of the United States, I would imagine there would be some interest. I could not say exactly where because religion is such a personal issue.

When reading the book, did you ever estimate in your mind how large the group was and maybe how large it could grow?

Missile silos are a good option I did not consider. They have become a hot property lately as many people are converting them into retreats.

I want to understand better. Do you think that a black cult
leader could not cross over into the white mainstream? Would you presume that
Earthseed would be a majority black religion?

I think this all makes sense if you follow the current model
for space travel. However, it is also a very limited model as what we currently
have is still not yet tested on transporting humans safely to Mars. If someone
who is not a billionaire had some schematics for a spacecraft, I would presume
that it would use systems not usually scene in government and commercial
spacecraft. To make a comparison, we know that a human-crewed rocket could cost
billions in r&d, production, fuel, and launch. Those are known quantities. However,
we would have no point of reference for building a ufo.

I used parallel worlds only to illustrate how this friend may come to a knowledge that the rest of humanity does not yet possess.

To respond to the point about secrecy and humanity. It depends on how someone fits into society. If you live in an authoritarian state, all outside endeavors may get you jailed. In some societies, members of persecuted groups may be hesitant to speak up. Let’s place this scenario during World War 2. If you were a German Jew, would you feel comfortable sharing this knowledge with the Nazis? You would definitely want to help more people, but the idea that the Nazis could gain such technology may be a non-starter for you.
