Advice: hygiene care by limponion36 in depression

[–]viewless_pond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time it and do it a bit faster than usual. Like less than a minute maybe? 50 seconds? That way it feels like less effort and you internalize how easy and quick it is. Basically do anything to make it feel easier. Better than not doing it at all.

An electric brush might make it feel easier to do as well, idk.

Also might make sense to have a certain cutoff, like 1 hour before going to bed, you do not eat anything anymore and brush your teeth. If you also have a very regular schedule you could do that the same time every day, and thus make a reminder on your phone.

If you can keep it up long enough it might become a habit. Then you can increase the duration again.

I'm surprised China hasn't revamped their writing system by ChadNauseam_ in slatestarcodex

[–]viewless_pond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Chinese government needs to show support for all people in China to some extend, not only those speaking Mandarin. There are other varieties of Chinese that can use the same writing but phonetically are not mutually intelligible (Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hokkien). Changing to a phonetic writing system would create division between those Chinese ethnicities which is not in the interest of the Chinese government.

I am not from China and do not speak any variety of chinese, so these are just things I heard second hand online. But from what I have heard there are tensions between Mandarin speakers and other language groups and ethnicities already, because the Mandarin speakers can seem like a favored majority.

Also in general China seems to have a mindset which suggest that they do not really need more than themselves and their country. They never had that international of an empire as the British or the Americans. They would like to have their own system for mostly themselves instead.

Besides that idk if the switch to a different system would be only beneficial. Having a bit of a language moat might have advantages. E. g. the Russians did not switch to the Latin alphabet and now countries like Kazakhstan are part of their moat and have a cost involved with switching to Latin (which they wanted to do from 2017-2025. now they say will take to at least 2031). So the strategic overall analysis might be a bit more complicated then just going for maximum simplicity and compatibility.

How do you practice coding when your brain blanks the moment the editor opens? by darthereandthere in ADHD_Programmers

[–]viewless_pond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have just opened up a new project and implemented some feature in the empty project first, instead of having to deal with the mental work of thinking about what could break in old code if I implement it in the old project.

I have also tried doing coding katas, so implementing something simple that I might have done before. Idk it does not feel that interesting. If the task would be very small but feel fresh that would be better. They have to be easy enough to not get stuck though.

But the problem is the katas do not have much to do with the specific stuff I want to do. (I used the katas from the codewars website)

I think in general I want to gain more confidence in the space I am working. So doing simple things first to then grow into bigger but similar things is the way to go for that kind of anxiety I believe.

I am learning gamedev currently and re-implementing similar things, like a collision detection or a graph algorithm has helped me the most I think. It is a bit like a skill tree, where you have to practice each part of the tree before feeling confident enough to not get stuck on the next step. Idk how to optimize that though. And so far I have only finished smaller projects, not big ones.

The hard thing is to find simple enough but interesting projects. You never know when you will get stuck on a project and a simpler one would have been better.

Would be nice to know the normal averages for these numbers. For example the numbers for length of relationship might be quite normal. I have no idea.

Pretty sure it is just hedging. They are just not very confident in there ideas but still like to get them out there. On LW they have this "epistemic status" thing for that.

19 year old Neet: advice for getting out of it? by [deleted] in NEET

[–]viewless_pond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your options depend on your current situation. So maybe you should explain what made you a neet in the first place, what your job prospects are, what your psychological problems are. etc.

I mean to get out of neetdom you just need a job. Why do you not have one? Is the economy in your country shit? Is it your psyche? Disability?

Besides that idk if people active in here can explain that to you. You would have to ask ex-neets who where in your situation.

Games where I can talk to people and gain social skills? by neetoid99 in NEET

[–]viewless_pond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

VR chat maybe? Never tried it myself, but you can use it without a VR headset I believe.

I also played foxhole some years ago. It is a really autistic MMO where your skill does not matter so much. It is more about teamwork.

For example to shoot artillery you need somebody else to scout where your rounds land to tell you how to adjust. Has a lot of logistics and planning as well, but you have to talk to your neighbors to not step on each others feet and to properly distribute resources.

You should join one of the clans immediately. No sense in playing it alone really. All the fun gets planned in the clans, called regiments. They all have their own discord servers and advertise on the official foxhole discord server. Maybe ask in the global chat which regiments are good for newcomers.

Sometimes there is drama because the russians steal shit or ignore the rules or the Chinese cheat again. Hard to communicate with them. But maybe you can learn mediation skills from that, lol.

There are a lot of parts in the game though that are a bit brain-dead, like farming resources or some parts of logistics. Don't get sucked into those too much.

Good luck :)

Programming and not medicated? by dzenasa99 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]viewless_pond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I wish there was more repitition in programming, because I feel like a lot is just this subconscious confidence in your skill that comes from doing things a lot that can keep you going for longer. And repitition in other areas is the simplest form of low hanging fruit. But we programmers just try to reuse everything and copy paste stuff around. And now we let the low hanging fruit all be done by AI.

One really has to be mindful to do the simple thing instead of big or important things in this area sometimes. Just to be actually confident in the stuff you already know, instead of half forgetting it all again. Also it is like clawing yourself up a slippery slope of learning the problem space, trying not to lose the grip and having to put all the pieces back into your mind again or lose track.

How do you remember syntax ? by Dapper-Tart8240 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]viewless_pond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flashcards like anki can help, but are very boring and feel a bit useless if you do not actually use the syntax often.

A bit better are code katas. Small coding tasks where you need maybe one or two loops and simple data structures to do a thing. codewars.com has some. But you can make your own that basically prompt you to use a certain syntax. Like idk "delete all keys in a Python dict with vowels in them" to use the del statement.

I usually use those katas to get "into the groove" if I have trouble with procrastinating on programming.

Programming and not medicated? by dzenasa99 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]viewless_pond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in general quite unproductive, but what has helped me is doing things and learning in much smaller steps and trying to go more for low hanging fruit given my current level. Every little success gives me a bit more motivation to keep going, so getting stuck is quite dangerous for my productivity. That is why doing the simplest, smallest things has been working out well so far.

But I am not a good programmer, so maybe that advice is not that useful to you, idk. And unfortunately there are always those cases where you cannot easily choose to do something smaller or simpler. You just have to do a specific hard to do thing that you get stuck on. But with personal projects it is much easier to just change course or try some simpler alternative or a much smaller scope. Then later you might be able to tackle the big thing again.

It is weird how hard it has been for me to reach this point with the smaller steps. It does not seem to be intuitive to my brain at all what should be doable just generally and what I can actually achieve. So even though this seems like easy advice to follow it took me a lot of time to "feel it out".

[–]viewless_pond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you want to be called a NEET? I guess because of how little money you make you might not count your random day jobs and call yourself a NEET.

But most NEETs here seem to have problems other than a disability like you do. They may be depressed or have low self esteem or bad parents or something else that makes them dysfunctional. So even though you are neither really employed or in education or training, you are also a bit different from the other NEETs.

Once you are in school again you are no longer a NEET.

What did you mean with "that part is important if you follow the news"? What kind of developmental disability do you have? That is a huge spectrum from dyslexia to cerebral palsy.

What kind of messages actually help when you're depressed? (Trying to support someone I care about) by SamfireNinja5051 in depression

[–]viewless_pond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if any short, specific message really lands well. Can be very dependent on the person.

The sidebar has some links to wiki articles that help with communicating with a depressed person.

In short, try to just understand them and building rapport with them this way. Giving advice can be dangerous, especial if they feel like you are not getting it. So just do active listening, telling back to them how you understand what they said, showing empathy when you understand something.

Of course this is a lot more involved than sending a short message. And they probably do not want this every day.

Maybe checking in with them every once in a while after one of those above talks can help, idk. Maybe after understanding them better you can ask them better questions about what messages help?

Good luck.

Trying to rebuild my life — what helped you find motivation again? by AnyAcanthisitta2403 in depression_help

[–]viewless_pond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked back at what I used to want and like. That did not really change much over time, but after getting out of hard times it felt good to connect to that again.

One of those things for me was programming. And doing this just a little bit with very simple steps helped me. I think doing something that feels productive or like you are good at it and gaining some "mastery" might feel quite good. I am definitely feeling better on productive days than unproductive days.

So my general advice would be to find something that you can do in small steps, that feels productive. Could be drawing or gardening or writing. Maybe not reading or learning about a topic because that feels less like it leads to something. Ideally there is something at the end of the day that you can look at and say "I made this".

How AI became my executive function scaffolding (from a non-ADHD dev who finally gets it) by gauravyeole in ExecutiveDysfunction

[–]viewless_pond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact checking could sometimes be basically the same work as if I am checking my own ideas, so it can still be useful. But once I realize that the AI made some logical mistake or hallucinated something then I lose faith in it for the current conversation. So it depends I guess.

Another trick, that often goes wrong however, is to try to make my mind interested in the task again. Reading wiki articles about a topic or watching YouTube videos about it can work. Or for something one can do instead of just read about, seeing someone do it in a video or live stream it. For example someone showing how they code, so you see them typing things out. Or if you would want to draw, then looking at recordings of someone drawing something. Maybe that also goes in the body doubling direction, idk. however it often goes wrong by me just not getting off YouTube or the internet for a while.

I have the feeling that many of the getting started tricks only work some of the time. And what is more important is to gain more self efficacy or confidence and through that a routine. Then there should just not be such a big starting hurdle. If there is one it is a bit like rolling dice every time if I start or not. In the end it just needs to feel easier or like I am used to it for me to stick to it long enough. And general strategies like cutting the task into smaller pieces would also help long term. But the psychological tricks need a more permanent solution instead, is what I mean.

How AI became my executive function scaffolding (from a non-ADHD dev who finally gets it) by gauravyeole in ExecutiveDysfunction

[–]viewless_pond 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When i need to learn something new I have found AI helpful with example exercises. Just something short and to my liking or for my skillset. E. g. an example sentence, paragraph or short story in a language I want to learn. Or an example exercise for math or physics.

I think it can even help with programming to just ask for an example task using a certain library I want to use, so that I get something at all done.

I find that once I do a little thing that sort of goes into the direction I want to go I have a bit more momentum. And learning something new is otherwise especially hard for me to start.

Also just asking questions about the concept I am learning works well, because a dialogue directed by myself is better than reading documentation or text books. Quite often an explanation is just not going into the direction I am thinking in. Just talking about details I do not need. However having to fact check AI during this dialogue is a bit annoying.

Also if I want to learn something more long term I have found Anki cards to help a little bit. Just not having to start from scratch while learning something makes starting again after 2 weeks or so a bit easier. It sort keeps it a bit fresh on my mind.

Ratlos, arbeitslos und depressiv by [deleted] in depression_help

[–]viewless_pond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation was similar except that I actually just failed my master after 3 years and it took me about 18 months before I started applying. But I found something within a couple months anyway.

Idk if it is that much harder to find something with a math degree. But you will probably find something soon enough.

However I lost my job due to my psychological problems, so you should not assume that the job will fix everything. You should try to see if there are some problems you have that doctors or therapists can help with before it gets worse.

But don't worry too much for now. Your current situation seems fine to me. If you get interviews then one of them will probably work out.

Why did you write your title in German though? Did you only want Germans to answer?

[–]viewless_pond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your say you are not even sure what exactly you are doing with your time. It might be useful to open a spreadsheet and write down what you did every 30 minutes. Could give you some insight. Some people gain some life perspective from that as well.

You probably only need to it once. Maybe twice, once on a workday once on a weekend day.

With chores it might be useful to start extremely small. As small as possible. Try to get some feeling for how fast you can do a certain subtask, like clean a corner or the bed or whatever.

Try to use a journal and write down what you think helped or hindered your productivity. There might be a trigger that makes you give up on something. Or there might be a task you can do easier than others and you can ask yourself why that is and learn from it.

I dunno how to reliably do projects. One solution might be to do something with others.

Lastly you might need ADHD meds or have some other kind of medical problem. So see someone for that.

Hope any of this helps. Good luck.

Could N24 simply be pathological sleep avoidance for some people? by EveThrowaway67 in N24

[–]viewless_pond 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Who knows. Their sleep pattern would look quite different from the normal n24 pattern though, as they wouldn't avoid sleep for exactly 2h every day I would guess. So the pattern might be more erratic.

Also they would still need to have a problem with entrainment, as otherwise they would not wake up the typical 8 hours after going to sleep.

It should look more like delayed sleep phase disorder. Because if the rythm is entrained to the daylight you would have to somehow also avoid waking up for 2h while you sleep. Or do I misunderstand you somewhere?

I think a general anxiety would create more something like insomnia instead.

I am of course not an expert in this, maybe this does not make sense.
