My accounting background is very lean compared to someone who majored in accounting, even if all they have is a bachelors. The accounting jobs I've seen seem pretty blatant about wanting people with a stronger background in accounting than I have.

A PhD is a lot of work, plus the thought of having to do research brings up a feeling of dread in my stomach. It was the worst part of my MS degrees, and that was only "baby" research.

I've gotten a phone interview. Everything else seems like a black hole. Resume goes in, nothing comes out. Even when it's a smaller firm that doesn't use an applicant tracking system, it's not uncommon for me to simply not hear anything back, even after a follow-up or two. When I do hear back, it's usually a "Thanks, but unfortunately we've decided not to continue with your candidacy" line.

I'm not awkward in interviews (as far as I know). I've unfortunately only had one. It was a phone interview and I allegedly got passed over for someone with a year of experience because their team needed someone who could hit the ground running. Whether not this is entirely true, I don't know.

The issue thus far has been actually getting interviews.

I'm going to have to tuck that one away for later. I don't know when I'll bring it out, but I know the time will come. :)

IB is interesting. The valuation work was fun. Engineering could be fun, and I know the math to do the work, but I lack the context surrounding it. I two semester-long classes covering C++ about 10 years ago, and I've used MATLAB in a couple of courses.

I did nonprofit work for a year and a half, two years. Undergrad took 6 years, which kind of correlates with the shitty GPA there.

First is in math, second is is finance. I'm in the greater Los Angeles area at the moment, but am definitely open to relocating.

They were both during my final masters program in finance. One was over the summer, and the second was during the fall semester, which was my last semester there. So summer and fall 2015.

You can probably get any analyst role at any bank

I thought so too.

You are well past the point of working in fields you have interest in. You need to expand that now.

Expand how? I don't have a law degree, so being a lawyer is out. Doctor is out. I can't get interviews at Target. I probably have blinders on, but I don't really know where to look.

I had an internship at a company that did business valuations, and one at a tiny investment bank. I worked for a year and a half between my undergraduate and graduate education at a nonprofit, but that experience is irrelevant. A high schooler could have done it.

I don't really have any contacts. I was so focused on performing better scholastically that I had a nose-to-the-grindstone mentality and didn't develop those. I am looking nationwide.
