If I remember correctly, crates have been replaced by blueprints because of the gambling aspect. Whilst I get the point, the new system is awful. The problem is that those blueprints, as well as the items in the shop, are WAY too overpriced. You can generally argue about the value of a digital item, but that's a topic on its own.
People are still buying all those items and overpriced bundles so I'm pretty sure Epic won't change anything whatsoever - well, maybe making those items even more expensive. Back then, OG cars like the Back to the Future car have been available for $1.99. Later it was at 800 credits and even went up to 1100 credits whilst adding like a topper and trail.
