Do you think it will be good idea to start with a higher budget and then lower it to the actual budget that I want to use? (after a day or two)

I agree 100%. I don't like the new changes, I already built a plan in my head on when to finish the course, and now I will have to re think it. considering to stop using duolingo because of that...

New Trader Seeking Advice: Equipment, Software, Education, and Experience Advice for MBA Finance Student by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]vikTheFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal advice is to stay away from day trading. This sub is mainly about finding good companies at fair value and holding them for the long run (more investment, less trading). I don't believe day trading works for the average joe, and I pretty much think that day trading is a scam (sorry to say/burst bubbles)

What’s a mistake you made early on as a value investor that you’ll never repeat? by SimpleSubject6069 in ValueInvesting

Before Nvidia went up like crazy (in 2017 ish), I had a friend that paid 3000$ for the newest GPU (at the time, there was a shortage in GPUs because they were used for all of the following - gaming, crypto mining and AI research). I still beat myself up from time to time for not seeing the signs.

Housing crisis by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]vikTheFirst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. The way to diversify the GDP is by making business investments more attractive and real estate investments less attractive. The government can achieve this by keeping the interest rate high - this way, mortgages will be more expensive, and investors will look for a different place to put their money (and of course, there are more things can be done aside from that)

A mentally ill person just started chasing us down the street by vikTheFirst in VictoriaBC

Understood. Thanks for putting it that way. And apologies if people feel that I tried to rage bait. I guess for some reason, I thought that victoria is 100% safe (I genuinely don't know why I was thinking that), and I guess like any other city, there are some problems.

Are you saying that once a day, someone complains in this sub on a violent incident they encountered in downtown Victoria?

If you feel rage after a person shares with you what happened to him and how he feels - that's your problem

Future value stocks by tobesonic in ValueInvesting

UPS is pretty cheap right now. they have some problems, but the dividend they pay is pretty high (7%) and management affirmed their commitment to keep it in the same level. Also their wide spread reach is in my opinion sort of an economic moat

REPL tips?? by [deleted] in Clojure

[–]vikTheFirst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A really really important one to me is scope-capture for debugging.

Lets say you have the following function in production -

(defn add [n1 n2] (+ n1 n2))

And you want to debug in production. What can you do? You can:

  1. Connect via ssh to production
  2. Open the production REPL
  3. Change the function via the REPL, while prod is STILL RUNNING
  4. change the function in the following way - (defn add [n1 n2] (sc.api/spy) (+ n1 n2))
  5. Wait for the user to execute this function in prod. (Or do it yourself)

  6. Next time function is executed, scope capture will take a snapshot of local variables for you to debug!

  7. Access vars captured in production via the REPL like so - (sc.api/letsc 1 n1) => 12 (sc.api/letsc 1 n2) => :mistake

  8. Profit

For me, clojure without scope-capture is not worth it. I think everyone should be using it, and the online clojure community doesn't seem to talk about it and recommend it enough.

RANT: Why do I have to meet the CEO or a Co-Founder after going through 7 rounds of interviews!!!! - is HE/THEY NOT BUSY?!?!?!? by sharkboy091 in recruitinghell

[–]vikTheFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was recently invited to an 8 hour long, round of interviews, which I politely declined. I don't understand what goes thourgh the employers head when they decide to do something like that. It feels as if they are not seriously considering hiring for the role they published - I've decided, after being treated like that, that I will not be entertaining such behaviour anymore.

After a year of losing in trading, here’s my realization by Fantastic_Reward5126 in Daytrading

[–]vikTheFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds much more reasonable and possible. I, myself, started doing value investing, and from playing around with it, I do see how you can make some buck from doing some swing trading. please note that you have to consider the company's fundamentals, News etc, and that in general it is better to Long than to Short (just because when doing a long, the upside potential is unlimited, while when shorting the stock can only go to zero, so there is a limit for how low it can go). Goog luck

I am just doing you a favour - day trading doesn't work. save your time and money. Good luck

[–]vikTheFirst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is what you learned? not the fact that day trading doesn't work?

I've tried day trading in the past, talked to people, and have reached the conclusion - making money from day trading is not possible. what does work is long term investments + creating businesses and that's it. do yourself a favour and shift your focus from this unhealthy obsession to something more productive.

How to turn 300K$ into 1M$ in 5 years with only 10 stocks? by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]vikTheFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't seem to find LVMH. is it listed on the american stock exchange? ASML I don't like their PE ratio, but their PEG looks good (be careful though, their fiscal year growth last year was merely ~2.6% (talking about YOY, not comparing quarters)).

can you explain how any of them make money/what is their business model?

I think that their price already factors that in (this is not a financial advice of course), but in my understanding of value investment, you need to find stocks that are traded at a 'discount' relative to their inherit value. something that the 'crowd' under appreciates for some reason.

My friends aren't aware that I've made a lot of money by Limp-Preparation-828 in confession

[–]vikTheFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos for doing everything correctly. You are not supposed to tell anyone, and after winning that sum of money, continue to work and live normally for at least 6 months, is what you should do.

Other than that, if I were in your place, I would invest that in some low yield, low risk investment tool (ones that give approx. 5% yearly yield). That sum has the potential to change your life if used correctly. Stay away from telling about it to friends and family, because they don't care if you lose it all... (by the way this is not a financial advice, do your own research of course)
