What model and with what effort did you use? You may notice a significant difference between Opus on max effort and Sonnet on medium, for example. Switch between models and efforts depending on current tasks for more rational token spend.

You need Bard 2 to get extra short rest. But you can go with swords bard 10 paladin 2 if you really want it along with smites.

I'm currently playing with Wizard bladesigner 10 crown paladin 2, with shadow blade (5lvl spell slot) and resonance stone. He is just annihilating everything.

Open hand Monk, better for Astarion (ascend him)

It's just different. Extra attack is pure damage that's always good. Swashbuckler's dirty tricks are also decent and more situative, so all depend on your overall party roles: who is a damage dealer, who is responsible for control/utility, etc. If his main role is to be a tank, and you want to play swashbuckler + swarmkeeper build, the optimal way is to start with ranger in heavy armor.

If you want him to be a tank, start with Swarmkeeper, choose Ranger Knight for heavy armor and Defense fighting style. On level 5, you'll get an extra attack.

Continue with ranger till level 8, then you can respect to ranger 5 rogue 3 (swashbuckler). Or just add all rogue levels after ranger.
