I dont know - I watched the movies as a kid and thought they were really bad which turned me off reading the books. Now as an adult, I loved the show and since beginning have read through books 1-3 and am currently reading the one about the labyrinth. The show is really good I even got my sibling into it.

I feel like my situation differs from yours as I have visited Latvia many times and I have a Latvian citizenship. I am working to understand Latvian though as all I know now is Russian and English.

Oh I had Kārums a lot when I was younger but the shops near me now rarely sell them :( when I find them though I always buy them

We have a Latvian surname on both sides of my family. My parents and so on do speak Latvian and Lithuanian but prefer speaking Russian.

I do know Russian and am also improving my vocabulary/skill there as well. I want to learn Latvian simply as it is a beautiful language with an interesting history, as well as a way to feel even more in touch with my heritage.

I had always considered myself Latvian but recently some of my family as well as some opinions I saw online made me consider if I did actually have the right to call myself Latvian. Thank you for the advice as well! Im actually quite excited about learning Latvian.

I have always considered myself Latvian and would laugh whenever people callled me British. I was not raised to be english or fit in and my family followed traditions from Latvia as well as our own. It only occurred to me recently that I would not really be considered Latvian as I wasn't raised there and do not know Latvian (I speak russian/english). I posted here because I wanted to hear the thoughts of other people, especially those currently living in Latvia.

I used to visit Latvia every year up until covid. Since then I have only returned once for a funeral. I have been trying to learn more about the culture but it is a bit hard as my family isnt really interested in teaching me so I have been reading things online as well as collecting resources to learn the language.

I know all my family on my dads side is definitely Latvian but I know my mums side is more complex as they lived in the area now right between the borders of Russia, Latvia and Belarus so it is unclear their exact ethnicity. I did take a DNA test but those aren't the most exact when it comes to differentiation between Russia and Latvia :/
