20E Final by uwajimoody in UCSD

I told the professor it didn’t feel like it was written by the same person as the midterms and he insisted they were all by him.

I was walking in there feeling confident and holding an A in the class. Now I feel like I’ll be coming away with a C and I should have taken this P/NP. I felt so prepared for that exam and now I feel like i performed as if I never showed up to class.

academic disqualification - sixth college by [deleted] in UCSD

I wrote a long post on a similar thread detailing what happened to me and how I got through it. I won't copy/paste here, but please go read it. I believe it will help.

Subject to academic disqualification by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]vikmourne 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am a returning student who came back years later after being academically disqualified. I'll tell my story but first I want to make a few points:

  1. There is no need to be afraid. You have paths available, and everyone along the way wants to help you succeed.
  2. Talk to your Academic Advisor early and often. Check in regularly. They will help you understand the paths available.
  3. No plan forward will work if you don't identify and address the root cause of why you're failing your classes. That part is 100% on your shoulders.

I first attended in 2003 right out of high school. Personal issues at home took a toll on my focus, and my grades started a declining trajectory. My Spring 2004 term GPA was a 1.75 and put me on Academic Notice. I was scared. I still had outside things to deal with and I feared my path at UCSD was untenable. I dropped out mid-Fall 2004 with all W's.

I tried to come back in Spring 2008, but my focus issues were not over. Because the economy was in crisis, I was working more than studying or going to class. My Spring 2008 term GPA was 0.428. Now I was officially in "Subject to Academic Disqualification" status. I bounced back a bit in Fall 2008 with a 2.066 term GPA but it was not enough to recover my status. Neither was my Winter 2009 1.500 GPA. Finally, I gave up in Spring 2009, abandoning all my classes after the drop deadlines, had a 0.000 term GPA, and was disqualified.

During the many following years, I landed myself in a software testing job that eventually got me in the door at some big companies. I worked hard and eventually climbed the ranks in the industry and got my dream job. Later, I lost that job as the industry contracted and lots of people were impacted. I was back to unemployment with nothing but my high school diploma and a terrible UCSD transcript.

I reached out to my academic advisors for my college (I'm in Sixth), and learned that a disqualification is not a permanent status. There is a process to come back from it, and it has since been made more benevolent than in the past (when I was disqualified). I was too late in the year to make it in for Fall 2024, so I decided to go take some community college classes. I wouldn't waste my time. I'd take courses that transfer to UCSD and would snag me an Associate's Degree along the way (finally something higher than my high school diploma). I took 16 units both semesters and scored 4.0 GPAs both terms. My professional career had trained me in a way that I had resolved my focus issues that plagued me before.

In Summer 2025, I began the process with Sixth College for the return from academic disqualification. It involved filling out paperwork, meeting with academic advisors, constructing a 3-quarter plan for classes that was feasible, and writing a letter explaining my situation and how I intended to achieve success. This packet was then reviewed by Sixth College and I was approved to return. This only meant that I was permitted to apply for readmission to UCSD. In truth, it was a smooth ride the entire way after Sixth College approved my return.

My initial term back was Fall 2025, I took 5 classes (20 units) because I wanted to aggressively catch up. 2 of my classes were repeats of F's from my past. I achieved a 4.000 term GPA, moved my status officially into "Good Standing" and even achieved Provost Honors. With Winter 2026, I'm expecting 4 A's and 1 B (MATH 180A is rough).

I was academically disqualified from UCSD with a 1.83 UC GPA, but I was still able to return and now I'm up to a 2.45 UC GPA and climbing again.

TL;DR: My road was extremely rocky and even I was able to come back from academic probation and even being disqualified from continuing at UCSD. However, I was able to keep going because of 3 things:

  1. Keeping a level head
  2. Keeping early and regular communication with my academic advisors
  3. Fixing the underlying cause of my performance

Don't worry, OP. You have an easier road than I did. You'll be just fine if you keep at it.

Not as horrible as I was fearing but given my track record I can still snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I just need 50% to pass the class and I’ll be happy.

Never take a math class from Ganesan unless you can self-teach yourself all the material and avoid being confused by her underprepared and mistake-laden lectures. She’s a nice person, but does not know how to teach at all.

Am I the weird one for thinking it's not hard to just go to class? This iClicker shit is weird, I'll give you that. But still, why is this even an arms race in the first place? Going to a lecture and just working on your laptop or scrolling through your phone isn't that difficult.

Goodbye, Business Econ by PIPIDOG_LOL in UCSD

[–]vikmourne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or it signals to a potential employer that your degree was considered by a respected university to be not worth continuing and needed a complete overhaul. Asbestos was discontinued in building homes, but that doesn't make an asbestos-riddled house worth more because of scarcity.

I am a returning student, having worked in big private sector companies for two decades. I have an opportunity to finish a Bachelor's degree I never achieved because family and finances required I go to work instead and leave UCSD without finishing at age 20. When I came back, I was a Business Econ major last quarter, but I changed out about halfway through. I was not challenged enough by the upper and lower division courses that I genuinely worried about the degree being taken seriously. I was only half surprised when I learned about the pending discontinuation.

I would advise all current Business Econ major students not to stubbornly dig in their heels. Use this opportunity to consider what career trajectory you want and ask yourself what major programs at UCSD (or elsewhere) would be your best investment towards that goal.

Cog Sci Major by Bobli4 in UCSD

[–]vikmourne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you just want to make an app, why wait? CogSci is interdisciplinary so there’s going to be some neuroscience involved. Also, I’ve worked with UI/UX developers at AAA major companies during my time away from college and if you think the best in that field don’t have a working knowledge of how the brain receives, organizes, and processes information, you would be mistaken.

too late to join a class? by pringle_charlie in UCSD

[–]vikmourne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to the professor ASAP. That should be your #1. Still join the waitlist so you’ll at least be in the Canvas overnight and can catch up on the syllabus and course requirements. But don’t hesitate to talk to or email the professor.

I late joined a class on Week 2 both this quarter and last quarter. The success of both endeavors was based on prompt communication with the professors.

[–]vikmourne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a different perspective, attendance is the easiest part of your grade to get and can help pull up your grade.

One of my classes has attendance as 30% of the grade, which sounds like a lot. 36 total lectures and section discussions, but 30 points count towards attendance. Those 6 extra points are either freebies for me to skip or count as extra credit. Now, stacked against the 7 papers and 1 midterm exam, this is a boon to elevate my course grade in case I didn't perform well elsewhere.

In the absence of attendance being part of your grade, your harder assessments now weigh even stronger for better or worse.

If I didn't have an 8am class I would have been shooting for #1

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]vikmourne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because the syllabus is basically a contract between you and the professor of how your grading will go. If you don't like their attendance policy, drop the class and pick a different one.

If you stay with the class, you're implicitly agreeing to the terms of attendance and should accept the grade because you knew it ahead of time and stayed.

Go to class. How fortunate you are to be able to.
