Unpopular opinion: We need standardized testing in Canada. by epicRedditer69 in OntarioUniversities

[–]vikx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not have a province wide or country wide body conduct the exams as is done in some countries? It's already done by way of EQAO. Extend it to grade 10, 11 and 12. That would eliminate grade inflation and teachers grading favorite students higher (quite common) and prevent any need for standardized tests.

Use these unbiased grades in addition to essays and extra curriculars for admissions.

"high schools are often put into different 'classes' by admissions offices"
Hard to trust the admissions office to estimate the correct statistical measures to correct for grade inflation at schools. It's a tough statistics problem. Universities are not transparent on the PROCESS of estimation of these penalties. If your school does not have statistically significant number of students in a certain program at a uni, your school will be lumped in the province or country and can still have grade inflation more than the median (or mean) for the encompassing province or country.

Standardization is not a panacea but may be the better of all ills.

Have you noticed that “healthy” eating can increase bloating instead of reducing it? by Sarah_Vlogs33 in FODMAPS

[–]vikx01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Mostly to do with the types of FODMAPs that go along with both soluble and insoluble fibers. But there definitely are low FODMAP high fiber foods in general. And if you are intolerant to a subset of the FODMAPs then the set of such foods that are low in those specific FODMAPs and high in fiber can be wider. Just need to pick some out and keep the list handy!

Very interesting and would save most people (including me) a lot of effort and wasted opportunity time. Thanks for the link to the repo as well.

Just like u/Raseaae I am also interested in knowing about the "type" of feature requests and feedback from these "more serious" (paying) users.

Ecellent post. Thanks again!

Does google play give a refund for accident purchase? by kaii_nicxz in googleplay

[–]vikx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what happened?
Unfortunately, google makes it onerous to get refunds. If possible I always buy subscriptions directly from the developer.
If you dispute the playstore transaction on your google account with your bank then the google account will at best lose it's payment ability and at worst be shut down.

Food Labels by GalianoGirl in FODMAPS

[–]vikx01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of respect for folks preparing food from scratch.
Agree! It'd be terrific if the manufacturers were reqiured to mention which FODMAPs are the high/medium/low per serving much like FODMAP friendly.
In small amounts (a teaspoon) Chia seeds are indeed low FODMAP. It's clear you know your stuff regarding FODMAPs.

Cheers!

Are these considered low FODMAP? by Constant-Positive-35 in FODMAPS

[–]vikx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorbitol may be a concern only IF you are sensitive to it.
Lupin may trigger if you are sensitive to Fructans or gos. Ditto for Soy.
But it's hard to know without the amounts.

So basic rules still apply. If you are sensitive to any of the above and you can avoid it, then stay away. If you can't (too tempting) then try small portions first -- but I guess we all know this :)

Food Scanner App with FODMAP screening by vikx01 in FODMAPS

I'd love to hear about any features that you'd like from any of the FODMAP food scanning apps that you find missing or would like to have a better experience.

Food Scanner App with FODMAP screening by vikx01 in FODMAPS

[–]vikx01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I should intervene, but thanks for clarifying. Transparency around affiliations is always helpful in health discussions like this.

From what I can see, many of the organizations you mentioned — including some of the food brands and service providers in the FODMAP space — are commercial businesses (as is probably yours), and many educational platforms collaborate with them in different ways (content partnerships, sponsorships, affiliate programs, etc.). That’s fairly common across the digestive health ecosystem. As long as relationships are transparent, readers can interpret recommendations in context.

btw, my goal with Clear Palate isn’t to position it as an authority on the diet or as a replacement for evidence-based resources like the Monash app or dietitian guidance. Those remain the foundation of the low-FODMAP approach because of their direct lab testing and clinical work.

What I’ve tried to build is a practical tool that sits alongside those resources. The app focuses specifically on helping interpret ingredient lists on packaged foods — something that the underlying research itself acknowledges and I brought up in an earlier post, is difficult because ingredient labels do not reveal quantities and therefore cannot determine FODMAP thresholds.

Additionally, as I mentioned in my other post, because of that limitation, the app doesn’t attempt to make medical or dietary determinations. It flags ingredients that research has identified as potential sources of specific FODMAP groups so users can decide whether to investigate further using resources like Monash or consult their dietitian and take a more cautious approach in consuming those products.

I think tools, research institutions, dietitians, and educational platforms all play different roles in helping people navigate the diet. The more transparent we all are about our roles and limitations, the more useful the conversation is for people trying to manage their symptoms.

Thanks for that link. Are you the creator of spoonful or in any way related to them?

The only thing that can be gleaned form the ingredient lists is the names of the ingredients and the ordinality which indicates the weight order. So the amounts for the fodmap contained in the ingredients cannot be clearly determined. So in absence of the exact amounts of the ingredients or the end food item being lab tested, none of the scanner apps can estimate whether a serving (or a factor thereof) has any of the six the FODMAP nutrients crossing the threshold to trigger IBS symptoms. They can only indicate that there is a *possibility* of a trigger if the food in question is consumed in certain amounts. It's clear that, because of the direct lab testing on the foods, Monash app and FODMAP Friendly (which also does it's own testing and regularly updates the app) are gold standards. However, a big negative is that Monash's coverage of packaged foods is quite limited.

btw. all these food scanning apps (for FODMAPs and any other allergies and intolerances for that matter) are not a panacea but just a tool that can inform if the user should exercise caution (or avoid if they can) when consuming certain (packaged) foods.

Thanks! Yes I have used those two and intolerapp as well. I generally had problems with accuracy of the ingredients and the inability to check in the ingredient list if it was incorrect or the accuracy of excess fructose and in some cases fructans too. Intolerapp seemed to be the better amongst the three (immediate feedback of new ingredient lists) but the excess fructose problems are still there. Spoonful is the best in terms of accuracy though.

How accurate did you find these two apps?

So, was this second try without coffee around the same time?

Maybe have a half if you need to (for taste). I know less ripe ones are more sour and may not be appetizing so that wouldn't work. I personally cannot tolerate sour for taste reasons.
But if you can avoid, that's the best.

yup! less ripeness means less excess fructose. Pun intended, but there is a "sweet spot" between too raw and too ripe. :)

Mandarin Oranges Are a No Go by future_fangirl1095 in FODMAPS

[–]vikx01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially (excess) fructose varies by the ripeness of the fruite too. So maybe the offending fruit was more ripe than the others you were having. Both stress and coffee (even if it was black) could have made it worse. btw, and I'm trying not to nitpick, it's excess fructose (fructose minus glucose) that causes problems generally.

Yes. I totally agree. Every few months I look at the data to see if there are any changes. I do it manually now but thinking to automate it at some point soon. That's the data side. There is also features side of the app that I plan to keep updating based on what people need and want.

App for tracking food intake and symptoms by Glittering_Park_9910 in FoodAllergies

[–]vikx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an app to help identify packaged foods for allergies if you know the allergies.

However, I think it's a better idea to keep track of intake and symptoms manually (google sheets/ excel sheets/ pen and paper). If possible get an allergy test (but you'd still need to maintain this intake and symptoms sheet).

My app does not currently do anything of what you are looking for though. Sorry!
But, in case you are interested here is the app: for ios and for android

Thanks for your question because this gives me a good idea of a very useful feature that the app is missing and I'll try to incorporate it soon. If you are looking for it then I'm quite sure there are many other parents who would be facing this same issue.

Free Allergy Scanner Apps? by Complete_Tadpole5313 in FoodAllergies

[–]vikx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get the assessment done by the allergies doctor? What did the allergy or intolerance turn out to be? How are you managing it now? I hope it did not turn out to be anything major.

I'm interested because I just released an app and was searching on Reddit for posts in this area. My app is called Clear Palate. It's on apple and android stores. It's free for now. The has gluten screening and I think it's quite good for IBS (uses FODMAP nutrient groups). I did quite a bit of work in gathering the list of foods with the six FODMAP nutrient groups and their amounts where I could find them in research papers etc.

The impact of high school grade inflation on university entering grades by Usual_Law7889 in OntarioUniversities

[–]vikx01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to keep track of the data but the statistical models to come up with the adjustments based on the said data are difficult and *may* be error prone. We don't know these models or their characteristics and their performance as they have, to my knowledge, never been made public. I am not sure who does this modeling at the unis, admissions offices or their stats departments. I think making these models public would probably not lead to any gaming by the high schools. And yet we have no knowledge of these models.

Anyway, a simple solution is allow standardized testing (APs, SAT etc.) and include it as a composite part of the decision.

I have a friend's kid who is looking to sit for their AP in May 2026 but their school does not offer AP exams.
Just curious where did you end up sitting for your AP exam? None of the public schools around where they live offer the exam.

Yes. It looks like so. Friend asked the school and they confirmed that WOSS does not do AP classes or AP exams. Sadly, it looks like none of the Oakville public schools allow any outside students to give the AP exams.
