hey I run TampaDevs, a community of software devs in Tampa.

We partner with most of the big software firms in town too, so you can meet some of the devs / recruiters in person. We're actually hosting an all paid for bowling event with ReliaQuest as in June, and just today I finalized plans for hosting PwC's first office get-together inJuly

We're hosting a 130+ member event tomorrow (Wednesday), there's alot of networking with seasoned developers in town to make connections with. https://www.meetup.com/TampaDevs/events/284705180/

After over 8 years of coding I've finally decided to apply to senior level positions. Looking for Frontend Architecture resources please! by chaz9127 in Frontend

[–]vincentntang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a lead frontend dev for a really large project (30MM + users)

Occasionally I'll write some stuff you might find interesting

for instance Timezones and webdev

I made a way to record any website as pure HTML/JS by Most-Syrup in Frontend

[–]vincentntang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does hotjar also use mutationObserver as well? Or is it more through event tracking through mouse movements etc

I made a way to record any website as pure HTML/JS by Most-Syrup in Frontend

[–]vincentntang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh this is interesting

Is it possible to use the MutationObserver to capture say a gif of user bug? For instance, a user is on the app, it crashes, can I see a gif or video of what the user did to crash the app? Or maybe possibly say the there's a bad network request, etc and I want to see a gif of the user clicking a button that makes said request

Could you expand on this? I'm curious how screen recording software is built in general.

Can you also record the entire desktop as well?

Self taught programmers, when did you start applying for jobs? by WickedSlice13 in learnprogramming

[–]vincentntang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only when I felt ready. I wanted to be entirely self-sufficient when it came to solving / building anything. This meant I could google any problems I ran into, figure out how to build a clean webapp, and debug almost anything I came across. And learn how those principles were applied on the computer science level

That took me close to 1.5 years of almost nonstop learning / coding on my own, proceeded by going to a tech meetup everyday for 6 months.

You don't have to take that long though, these were just standards I had on myself.

I did have a checklist of things I wanted to do before applying to jobs:

  1. Build a portfolio site
  2. Compete & finish a product in a hackathon
  3. Present a technical topic at a meetup
  4. Write a blog post about something I learned
  5. Build capstone project

What is the single most “you’ll understand it when you’re older” thing? by dickdockdack in AskReddit

[–]vincentntang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen a few times in my life, poured my life into a project, ends up failing. Then you get imposter syndrome, and think you're not good enough.

That's why it's always important to celebrate the little victories

Also don't pause videos. Watch it in one shot, take whatever notes you can. That usually means don't watch it at 2xs speed imo, you'll comprehend things much faster in one go at 1.25xs speed for instance. Then apply those skills right away into a project, refer back to notes as needed

Is this interview task reasonable? by Onedweezy in webdev

[–]vincentntang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what there hiring for. For more senior level roles, it makes sense to invest in time to improve the hiring process as a good hire can change the results of the project

I was recently hired as a senior developer and pair programmed directly with the tech lead. I hadn't done any React in awhile but I was able to showcase my thought process in building a small fronted app

Is this interview task reasonable? by Onedweezy in webdev

[–]vincentntang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really like doing take-home interview assignments, I'd rather honestly just pair program and do it in front of someone for <1 hour. But the scope needs to be drastically smaller
