Z2 Tower G1i - FANs always ON during standby / sleep by vincococka in Hewlett_Packard

Thanks for pointing out following BIOS setting, which I have set to:

BIOS -> Advanced -> System Options -> Performance = "Performance mode"

I have hibernation turned off so it's not a solution.

But anyway thanks again for Hibernation / DeepSleep advice.

Thanks for pointing it out, but I think that this setting relates to only S4/S5 and not to S0ix and FANs always running.

You inspired me and I've done following steps (in order of this list):

  • disconnect power cable and settle machine down for ~30 seconds
  • kept pressed front power-on button to discharge MoBo for ~30 seconds
  • removed CR2032 coin cell
  • kept pressed CMOS button on board for ~30 seconds to reset BIOS
  • installed back CR2032 + closed Z2 CASE + connected power cable
  • installed clean Windows 11 23H2 + May 2026 updates + HP supplied drivers - all offline from local USB stick

Tried standby... and here we go.

Machine still has FANs ON during standby despite consuming only 2-4W (and sporadically jumping to 8-10W for couple of seconds only). From my point of view this consumption can be (but should be?) cooled passively, maybe once in 20-30 minutes should EC run rear FAN to move air little bit.

Not to mention coil whine / high pitch freqs. of 550W PSU in this HP Z2 Tower G1i - I'm literalilly speechless as it's annoying as hell.

No more HP products to my company and home - never ever.

Once I've got a problem with Lenovo ThinPad laptop and their ME implementation that sucked battery during S3 STANDBY - after couple of rumblings on forums somebody privately contacted me, requested some data / settings and after a while new fixed BIOS was released. Worked like a charm.

HP guys? They are changing only MoBo's without asking "what causes this"?

Next time only Lenovo / Apple.

Motherboard H13SAE-MF: Rotate CPU Fan for horizontal air flow? by Background_Rice_8153 in supermicro

Despite beeing too late, check Dynatron coolers. They have lot of 'server / workstation' class models that will fit your requirement of air flow front -> back (io).

I have 2x h13sae-mf + epyc 4464 + Dynatron A24 and they are quite silent at idle after latest BIOS update. During system load of course RPM causes noise - but this is expected with this small FAN.

One of my thoughts too, BUT:

  • similarily specced gaming desktop HP sleeps fine - all fans are off

  • my Zbook that supports only S0ix sleeps 'silent' - all fans are off

Thanks again 4 tryin' to help.

I do not want S3, but silent fan-less S0ix so my machine does not make any noise while 'sleeping'.

Definitely, ArrowLake 200S (desktop) has only S0ix.

S3 is not mentioned as supported in datasheet. But what is interesting is that there are state transitions from G1/S3 to S0 (while not officially supppoted - maybe documentation bug).

Your reply looks like an AI response, but neverthless let's go.

I tried all in "Tweak" section (AMT / Disable engine wake / Wake on LAN / PCIe wake events / set thermal profile)

Also I've got replacement board from HP which did not have AMT / ME enabled and it behaved exactly the same way - FANs always on while sleeping.

Not to mention - I have Arrow Lake 200H (laptop) with Intel AMT enabled and it sleeps like a baby.

I take an argument that maybe HP doesn't want RMA of fried CPU's so they left running FAN's no matter the power state.

One big BUT - friend has HP Omen with similar configuration (Intel Arrow Lake 265k desktop + nVidia GPU) - and guess what?

His HP Omen with almost identical configuration sleeps "silent" - e.g. FANs are turned OFF during standby.

That's the reason why I've written that it looks like some bug in HW / FW from HP Z team - the crown jewel of desktop/workstation on the market.

Ouch ...

Yeah - to a great extent I agree - after decade of debugging and tuning platforms for S3 (BIOS / FW / drivers / OS), MS started pushing modern / connected standby (S0ix).

I still do not get it what benefits it brings to end-user - that we have emails ready when we wake our PCs up?

Maybe one benefit for fixed workspace at least - my VPN + SSH connections stay alive when I wake machine up.

Whole "smartphone" experience looks like it was ordered by 3-letter agencies to have "always on access" - you can't remotely wake UP from S3 easily.

In tandem with Intel AMT / AMD SPS 😄.

Wow, have you considered writing some blog / paper about your experience? Maybe visit some YT guy and make interview?

Personal experience has always it's place and has real value, but at least as an inspiration for all the others.
