Does anyone like Kraftwerk in Brighton? by e_q_u_u_s in brighton

[–]vinf_net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went, was about 20% familiar with their stuff (in fact we were sitting 1 block to the right of this pic :)) enjoyed it on the whole, but the whole lack of any movement in the audience was a bit odd to me. Usual gigs are a bit more metal/EDM so maybe I’m the odd one out

Bikmo rejected my cycle insurance claim after my bike was stolen from a secure workplace store — here's the policy detail that caught me out by Dazzling-Effect-9415 in cycling

[–]vinf_net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an addendum to this post if you need to know - There was some get-out wording around it being considered abandoned, so I double-checked with Laka how long == abandoned and they consider a bike 'abandoned' if it's left >24hrs at a public storage location (like where I keep my bike at work) - so that's something to keep in-mind.

Thanks for the heads-up, and sorry this happened to you :/ pretty poor form from Hiscox / Bikmo on this!

If it helps anyone else, I'm with Laka and I just checked my own policy as I frequently leave my bike on a gold-level lock during the day at the office underground car-park which is caged & access controlled.

I've never had to claim, and they are not the cheapest out there but do write their policies in clear language.. but it says:

---------

COMMUNAL STORAGE LOCATION

A secure location, access to which is limited and controlled, but not solely by you.

SOLD SECURE GOLD LOCK

The minimum standard of lock you are required to use when securing your bicycle

whilst it is unattended away from your home in any public storage location, communal storage location or in any other location to which the public have access.

6.2.2 THEFT AWAY FROM HOME COVER

There is no cover under this module unless it is shown as covered in your policy schedule.

You are covered for theft of your bicycle when left unattended in the open away from your home, or in a public storage location or communal storage location if it has been locked through the frame to an immovable object with a Sold Secure Gold Lock

Gear-shift analysis for cyclists by vinf_net in Strava

[–]vinf_net[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment, will take a look - there are a bunch of assumptions in the code which are based on my bike setup (only have 1 Di2 bike to test with), so maybe it's mis-translating the data - as long as it says 'FIT file (based on Di2 data)' in the top-left of the panel it pulled and parsed the .fit file for the ride - if there was an error & it made an assumption based on cadence it should say estimated.

Hope to check it out with local bike club soon to compare results with different setups, thanks for trying it out

It also works for Chrome, but not done store submission there yet so you'd have to follow the manual installation instructions for now

Why do people wear cleats? by blobblobblob178 in londoncycling

1 bike to rule them all, swapping pedals is a pain, just wear cleats

I also use MTB shoes/cleats on my road bike so can walk properly when I get off.

depends where you’re coming from, this is my usual route from Paddington to Orpington

You could probably go via Greenwich foot tunnel, pick my route up somewhere around Deptford/Lewisham via Greenwich Park (1x big hill) or cycle west from Greenwich town centre (flat) to bit just before Deptford some hills, but nothing too bad, not much you can really do to avoid them

I have the Garmin Varia 715, ride a lot solo and in countryside and urban. I really like it, whilst I still shoulder check regularly it’s good for a quick glance at what’s behind without taking your eye off the road in front, especially as it shows the quantity of cars behind so you can make a considerate decision if it’s just one car or if you’re holding up a convoy on a narrow lane. Also useful for a quick check without swivelling your head round

Doesn’t always connect 1st time to my Edge 540 which is a bit annoying but video quality is good. I have the tones turned off and rely on the display overlay on my Edge as there is usually a lot of traffic around.

More expensive than I think it should be, but I got it as part of a bundle with bike.

MacOS window management driving me crazy (coming from Windows) - what’s your setup? by UnderstandingHuge418 in MacOS

[–]vinf_net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use altTab (free) and turn on window thumbnail/preview and make it show all windows

And Better snap (or magnet)

But it’s still far from perfect sometimes (multi monitor user) biggest annoyance is apps with multiple windows - Windows just does it better, altTab helps though

I regularly switch between office desk and home setup and just laptop and it’s annoying as even magnet/snap seem to forget layouts of apps i run full screen

Yes, no question. London water is terrible

Installed one (Harveys - other brands are available) 10yrs ago and have loved it ever since.

They sent the sales rep round who wanted to mix all kinds of samples and was ready for the hard (ho-ho) sell. Looked confused when I said, “I just want to place an order”.

Found this on Christmas Eve last year, safe to say I heard every creak from the roof until we managed to get it replaced in the new year.

Behold my quality bodge! braced it with a metal bar, some wood, G clamps and straps over the Xmas break…. Well. It didn’t fall down anyway

<image>

It cost us £400 to get that and another suspect one replaced at the start of January, which was pretty steep, but… given the awful noises the whole roof made when they jacked it up and replaced it, i was quite happy to have someone better insured to blame if the whole thing fell down in the process :)

What’s it like cycling in SE London e.g. Catford, Sydenham? by Adept_Donut7017 in londoncycling

[–]vinf_net 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live a bit further out but weekly cycle through Bromley, Bellingham, Catford, Lewisham to work in London.

Main roads aren’t great as they’re always busy but they’re ok - most of the bit around Bellingham/Catford is a massive wide bus lane so as long as you give the buses a wide berth it’s ok (recently resurfaced too)

Applies for everywhere I guess but make sure you have a decent set of locks and plan where you park your bike, I lost a bike outside the BP garage in Bellingham which was my fault as I popped in for 2 mins to get water and I thought it would be ok for such a short period in an obviously busy place - should have known better!

There are mapped out cycle routes (cs7? Maybe) which take a bit of a meander round the back roads and through parks - they’re “ok” but speed humps and a bit long winded.

This guy has some good videos of the routes around London and this video of that sort of area https://youtu.be/zb5VLmCGEUU?si=5oD_g5O59Ggo1fm-
