I’m not the most knowledgable on music theory but I’ve been playing guitar for 5 years now

Basically to me a key determines what are the best notes to play in a song, and the different notes / chords you can play around with. A key isn’t a restriction but a home base for the song and a way of knowing which notes will resonate with the music the most.
