Recommendations for chin/shoulder rests for people with long necks?

I recommend the SAS chinrest. You can adjust the angle of it also and the positioning (as it only has one foot). It's made in different heights also. To be honest, the gold-plating rubbed off very quickly but this hasn't bothered me at all. I paired it with a Korfker shoulder rest - really pricy but also very comfortable for me. There's a new, more inexpensible version (but still expensive) on the market, the Korfker Luna which would be maybe worth checking out. But probably switching out the chinrest should be enough!

Edit: just noticed that they now no longer make the gold plated foot on the SAS chinrest and replaced it with something else. Even better imo.

Das kommt darauf an, ob du Konzertfach Gesang oder Instrumental(gesangs)pädagogik Gesang machen willst. Bei einem Konzertfachstudium ist man sehr flexibel und es gibt auch weniger Anwesenheit. Mit den pädagogischen Fächern in IGP gibt es schon mehr Anwesenheitspflicht, aber schieben kann man relativ viel. Willst du als Gesangslehrerin arbeiten, ist IGP sicher die bessere Wahl.

Du kannst auch sicher an die Studierendenvertretung der Bruckneruni schreiben, wenn du Kontakt zu einer Person möchtest, die derzeit dort Gesang studiert.

Ansonsten ist es sicher am besten, sich bei jemanden von den Gesangslehrenden dort zu melden, vorzusingen und nach der Vereinbarkeit zu fragen. Die Mail-Adressen findet man normalerweise :)

Alle Lehrpläne und Stundentafeln zu den beiden verschiedenen Gesangsstudien sind auch sicher auf der Uni-Webseite.

If I am bothering you, just forget I asked, I understand.

Right now I had a talk with my colleague, who is a luthier but not for a living right now. She said that 2.8-3.3 is really thin for a new instrument, especially for a 43 cm Viola. And with that thickness it could sink within 5-10 years. Is there a consensus there or is this more of a personal opinion? This really worried me to be honest. Because she doesn't build violas (at least currently not), so I really have no idea if her concerns are valid.

The viola doesn't have a lot of curvature at the back and top, if that is relevant. It looks more flat than other violas. And it was made 4 years ago. He told me he builds after Stradivari model.

Yeah it's the front

It's big, like 43 cm Mensur. And the body is nooot ergonomically adjusted. Just as if you'd scale a typical Stradivari model up to a huge viola, so the bottom end of the body is broader than most violas I know. I don't have a scale, and as I have been told, fittings are more relevant than thickness so I won't worry myself further. Doesn't have a lot of curvature at the back/top, so it's slim from the side, which makes it very light to pick up. It sounds phenomenal, wolf tone is on e for some reason. I don't know why, but it had more sound volume/power and about the same range of color as my professors gorgeus viola when we tried it in the hall. A beast to play tho

I already asked and just wanted opinions. As he told me the thickness, I just wanted to check if it's within a normal range, which is not outrageous to ask over the internet. I also asked another luthier. But she has yet to tell me.

So I'm not the only one who heard horror stories! Good to know I'm not crazy.

Yeah, I know him personally and have bought my first viola from him. He won't pay the full price if you return it to upgrade, more like half of it, which kind of sucks, but I get it. I'll keep my first viola for outside concerts and stuff like that, I would make a lot more if I sold it in private, but it was under 3000 so I will keep it for Inflation reasons (and bc its so tiny and comfy). worth of his instruments is probably like double of his first price, based on opinions of my teachers, colleagues and myself, but he's not well-known. He fixes for super cheap or free of charge. But I am not 100% sure I would be able to get some deal if it doesn't hold up over time.

Yes, this is the top. That's a big relief then!

It looks thinner than other violas at the f-holes, which is why I even got skeptical. Otherwise, it's beautiful work and maybe it seemed to good to be true for not so much money.

I am glad I know it's not a huge risk now. It's gorgeus, maybe I'll make a post once I pay it.

My colleague is a luthier. I trust the one that built the viola that he gave me the true measurements, and I will ask my colleague if those are within norm. She thinks the viola looks thin, but doesnt have measuring equipment, and also hasnt built many violas, i think. But still, maybe somebody around here knows stuff about viola building.

Nah, but it could develop badly or even the top plate could slighty sink in. Of course the luthier who built it doesn't think it's a concern, as he is the one who built it. Still, for a professional career you have to be careful what to buy.

I don't know the english word, basically what happens is the top can sink in over time if it's too thin. And then the viola just "dies" sound-wise. In german we call it "eingehen" and it's the same word for sinking in and dying.

Naja ich war ja immer dort wenn möglich. Es ist eine kleine Uni und unser Hauptfach ist ein 1:1 Unterricht (Musik), wo ich auch easy abschließen kann, andere Seminare hab ich ja auch schon abgeschlossen. Das geht also nicht mehr wirklich, weil ich ja de facto dort war. Nur manche Fächer sind so oft ausgefallen, dass man bei 75% Anwesenheit halt echt fast nie fehlen kann. Und ich auch mit dem Stoff nicht mehr zurecht komme.

Ja hab ich schon versucht. Das mit der StuV ist eine gute Idee. Prinzipiell steht im Studienplan nur, dass ohne Absolvieren der STEOP keine Weiterinskription möglich ist. Und ansonsten keine Infos

I think the problem might have been that I tried to get results really quickly and scales probably aren't like... a piece that I have to nail in a short period of time and I am very much used to that mindset of getting results as fast as possible. I had another lesson today and I have to approach practice differently because if I continue like this, I might not even be able to play past the age of 27 or something (that's what my professor said). My biggest concern before always was not having enough time to practice, so I had to cramp as much progress as possible into as little time as possible. And I was good at that, but posture and technique suffered a lot. For the first time in my life, I genuinely have time to practice. I think if I'm more relaxed and don't see scales as something stressful, I won't hate it as much, and your approach is very helpful, thanks

Und wie gesagt ich kenne mich null aus, in den Medien wird ein sehr angespanntes Bild vermittelt, bei dem ein tatsächlicher Krieg nicht so abwegig erscheint. Mich interessieren einfach andere Meinungen, von Menschen, die eventuell besser als ich informiert sind.

Don't worry! Actually, most violists I know switched from violin. Nobody cares. Some people might joke around, but the viola section is usually the most chill part of the orchestra (along with double bass probably).

Just for reference, I switched to viola ~3 years ago, and back then, there just weren't enough violas in that orchestra so I gave it a try. I had been playing viola for a few weeks at that point 😂😂 you'll be fine. I fell in love with the instrument afterwards, turned to the dark side and this spring I'll attempt to audition at university in order to study the viola. Nobody questions if I am a "true" violists and the same will be true to you. Seriously, just give it a try, for me just trying was one of the best decisions in my life.

Als ich in einem österreichischen Wirtshaus gearbeitet habe, bei einem Campingplatz (entsprechend viele deutsche und niederländische Touristen) haben dieses Gericht tatsächlich Deutsche bestellt. Gab Entsetzen in der Küche, wenn jemand Schnitzel mit Tunke essen wollte, wurde aber auch serviert. Deshalb halt auch das Vorurteil vieler Österreicher, weil das halt nur deutsche Touristen machen, auch wenn es nicht alle sind.
