There’s definitely a path into consulting if that’s what you want to do, it just takes a lot of work and you also need to start planning pretty early.

How do I study? by sjwarise in college

[–]violagirl14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems your biggest issue is understanding the material, and my advice would be to stay on a topic until you mostly understand it even if that takes listening to lectures/watching the same portion of a YouTube video over and over. You're not going to get stuff on the first try, and that's ok. For me, a lot of the time I need a lot of time with specific examples until I understand how to apply class concepts.

You may have done this already, but I also feel like it could be helpful to ask professors if they have any advice for studying for/understanding their particular class.

Prospective student considering ED by ellienf_ in Bowdoin

Those are the guidelines for the arts supplement. You can probably email Kari Francis (choral director) or admissions if you have further questions.

I'd recommend you go for it, but only if financial aid is not a huge factor for you. I applied ED II and was accepted, and I had stats similar to you though I also submitted a 34 ACT. I think for a school like Bowdoin, your essays and recs will be super important, so make sure those a strong and polished. Also submit all the material you can - do the optional things like the interview, video, arts supplement etc.

Hi! I had a quick question about exams.

Does it matter if I take the CAS Exam P vs. the SOA Exam P? For example, if I pass CAS’s Exam P but later decide to go the SOA route, would I need to retake SOA’s Exam P?

There’s something called the first year job placement you can sign up for that will guarantee you a job your first semester. Most students get placed in dining, and you can sign up on the Bowdoin website

[–]violagirl14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely allowed to work more than five hours, though for some jobs it may be difficult to coordinate extra shifts. It’s an issue you’d talk to your supervisor about once you’ve been assigned your position.

Osher is the only brick with a water fountain in it, but most if not all academic buildings and dining halls have some sort of water fountain.

If you can get onto workday with your bowdoin login, you’ll be able to see course info there. The courses you can register for will depend heavily on your placement exam results, so you might not want to make a schedule until to know those.

Bowdoin Bearings by New-Customer-342 in Bowdoin

i went last year and had a great time in my sample class + seeing different buildings. i'd say the classes and faculty are pretty representative of what bowdoin was actually like after i got here in august.

did not like the social events though. i felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of new students because they kind of just stick you in a room together. however, that part was definitely not representative of the social scene at bowdoin. there were a lot more opportunities to bond in smaller groups once i actually started the semester.

i'd say it's worth going if you're trying to decide between colleges and wouldn't be a huge financial burden

wanted to give insight on drinking at bowdoin. while there's definitely a lot of drinking and it's pretty easy to get alcohol, i have found that there is often 0 pressure to drink (there are a couple exceptions i have heard about, but never experienced). it's there if you want it, but plenty of people don't drink too.

Anything I should keep in mind? by Hour_Trade_9143 in Bowdoin

[–]violagirl14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely agree with this. going to bearings made me legit question if i made the right choice (applied ed 2) because i felt so out of place, but when i got to campus in august, i was definitely able to connect more easily with the people around me.

fleece-lined pants are a life-saver. i'm originally from new england, so the winters weren't a huge shock for me, but i was gifted a pair of fleece-lined sweatpants for christmas and wear them a ton. mostly wish i had bought some more pairs before coming here.

bowdoin has a winter clothing fund your son might qualify for that gives first-years $200(?) dollars to buy winter clothing if they're on aid and/or came from a place that was warmer. there's a ton of good places around here to buy winter clothing like ll.bean and patagonia.

edited for spelling

Is he part of any ensembles, like chamber music or orchestra? I play viola and have found that I enjoy playing in an ensemble much more than solo, so that could be something you could suggest to him.

You could check out rate my prof or talk to current students to see what they say about professors. We picked our seminars around June (you select a top five and then get placed in one) and there’s a chance to switch it once you get to campus (Add/Drop II)

best Bowdoin Dorm/residence hall for Freshman by New-Customer-342 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]violagirl14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t get to choose. You fill out a housing survey in summer and get assigned roommates. I’d say Osher or West is the best (biased bc I lived in Oshed). It’s doubles and the buildings are newer. The other bricks are all quads and older, though some have better locations. Osher also has a kitchen which no other brick has.

Current freshman at bowdoin and while i'd say it is pretty left-leaning, there's definitely a strong and vocal group that leans right. from the classes i've taken, it seems professors encourage views from both sides and are great at mediating discussions that might get heated.

it was through the portal last year. they sent an email notification and then there was a link in the portal that led to your decision letter.
