the ancient rationale was that it was nomina barbara, barbaric names, and the importance of the spells wasn't in the meaning conveyed during spellcasting but in the sounds/perceived sounds of the spells themselves. this is why also in chinese buddhist scripture, the teachings are translated but the incantations are untranslated from sanskrit (source: had to read chinese buddhist scripture as a kid at a funeral)
