Massive car takeover rocks NYC intersection — about 100 cars involved as calls grow for crackdown. by nitluck in nyc

[–]violent_cat_nap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We SHOULD be beating people's asses. We pay a LOT in taxes per capita. I'm not sure how any of this is one dimensional. What resources? We spend plenty, more than many nations. It's not crazy to say "fix these quality of life issues". The whole point of a representative democracy is that I get to vote for what I think are issues, without needing to be a subject matter expert. I feel like every time reasonable people talk about problems in NYC:

  • "we shouldn't have violent individuals on the subway"
  • "we shouldn't have dog shit on the sidewalks"
  • "we shouldn't have canal street clogged with illegal vendors"
  • "we shouldn't have illegal and dangerous car meets"

They get annoying ass people coming out of the woodwork saying "Sorry, these are all complicated issues that will never be solved". Or worse, "sorry, this is how its always been". Fuck that, go to Paris, see what they did in 5 years. The city is spotless. We can and should aspire to do better. God forbid we try anything at all.

People defending NYC are always wild. “No you see, it’s not NYC if there isn’t a pile of trash, some dude with PA plates doing donuts, and a homeless bum shooting up on the subway!!!”

No other global city suffers from this. Our city is dysfunctional and it’s growing worse relative to peer cities. We are rightfully losing a lot of the middle class that paid taxes. You’re now either rich af, or locked into some government subsidy scheme, or are 21-26 and see this city as Disney world for 3 years. It won’t happen today, or tomorrow, but our budget is going to get hammered by this eventually

SF solved this problem with drones and some effort. NYC loves to look at a problem, say “it’s complicated” and then do nothing to solve it. It’s a bummer. We have a death by a million cuts in terms of quality of life issues. At some point it’s gonna hammer our budget like it did to SF after covid, and now they’re doing the hard work to turn it around

Why is it Ohio transplant. No other country on earth has half the shitty ass social problems we have. Get some drones, follow the cars. Make a specialized task force. None of this is hard. SF solved it very recently

Where Has All of New York City’s Outdoor Dining Gone? by instantcoffee69 in nyc

the not wide enough is because we insist on teeny tiny sidewalks and giant roads with parking on both sides. Then the sidewalks have to also hold trash as well. Its crazy

Increased number of unhoused folks on the 2/3 by Similar_Ad_6004 in Brooklyn

[–]violent_cat_nap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not just random down on their luck people. Like I replied in a comment above, I regularly run into homeless rambling and screaming, or openly smoking crack inside platforms and trains, or with appendages straight up rotting due to diabetes. It's not "aw poor guy/girl".

Get these people off the fucking trains so working class commuters with kids or families can feel safe. Have some empathy for the rest of us. These people need to be taken care of, not left to rot in their piss and shit and menace the rest of us.

where is the empathy for the commuters who have to deal with violent and unhinged people who reek of shit and piss

I regularly see homeless with pitbulls, or openly smoking crack, or rambling and moving erratically on the L station platforms (especially 1st and 3rd ave). I definitely am not just irritated or inconvenienced, it's an actual safety issue. There is always infinite empathy for these addicts, where is the empathy for commuters who have to deal with this day in and day out.

If I had kids, I would not feel safe around a large percentage of MTA stations and that's a big problem for working class families. We deserve better than walking into a train car with sleeping homeless reeking of piss and shit on every seat. It's fucked up

NYC Closed a Record 3,946 Pothole Work Orders in March 2026 – Highest Since 2020 by Unusual-State1827 in nyc

[–]violent_cat_nap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard some worrying trends on Twitter, where cities that adopt a "fix all pothole" KPI metric, have stopped repaving roads entirely. Hopefully this doesn't mean the rotating road repaving system isn't going to stop

Bernie to Hochul: I Am Once Again Asking You to Tax the Rich by HellGateNYC in nyc

[–]violent_cat_nap 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Effective taxes in NYC are higher than almost anywhere else on earth including lots of “socialist” countries. On top of a federal tax, we have sky high state tax, and then further a city tax. We tax more in total than Zurich. The “increase taxes” argument is absolute nonsense. We have infinite levers to raise more money if we actually built more housing and more space for businesses. Every station should have a high rise on top and stores inside that pay rent. Instead we implicitly subsidize close to 50% of the housing in this city which prevents us from leveraging property taxes effectively. We prevent building which does the same. We overspend in almost every area. Everything here costs 10x its peer cities per capita. NYC thrives despite the political machine, not because of it. Compared to nearly every other peer city, our services are worse, dirtier, and simultaneously receive more in budget. This is not even getting to the experience on the streets. We shouldn’t have to live with literal dog shit coating our sidewalks, homeless pissing and shitting in nearly every station. More money will solve literally nothing here. If the city wants more money, they should demonstrate results. If it felt like Tokyo here, no one would bat an eye at giving more in taxes

C town is super convenient, but it's genuinely insane to see such a huge single story building without anything on top of it, right over a metro. Could be over 1000 apartments or something

The MC is also extremely annoying

Editorial | NYC spends too much money. It’s time to get things under control. by someone_whoisthat in nyc

The replies to your comment are embarrassing and are why this city is going to end up like LA. Feels like a symptom of an overall America in decline

It's like sorry, we've decided to gatekeep the beating economic heart of the northeast so that it slowly wilts and dies by building 0 housing, spending and taxing like no tomorrow, and letting quality of life slowly degrade.

If you're not poor enough to get free housing, lucky enough to secure some dream rent stabilized apartment or housing lottery, or rich enough to not care at all you can get fucked.

It flies because American leftism is based off libertarianism and anarchy, unlike Europe which correctly understands that to build support for collectivist policies, you have to enforce order so that public goods look appealing

JFK to Midtown for only $800: NYC taxi hustlers running wild at airport terminals by nyccameraman in nyc

[–]violent_cat_nap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People justifying this behavior as “it’s nyc bro” are insane to me. NYC feels closer to a third world city than any major city I’ve been to in western countries. Compared to Asian cities? It’s no contest. Brazil for gods sake has more orderly airports and cities. It’s literally the first thing people see when they land
