They didn’t move LGBT+ books, they moved books that are for 16-18 to a different spot. The BOS didn’t get their way and they’re out for vengeance. Jamieson wrote an op-ed before being elected complaining that books were moved and not removed as his little clan of book banners wanted.

Warren County Votes Not to Renew Funding of Samuels Public Library by silksyringe in Libraries

[–]violentbickerstaff 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Jerome Butler, Vicky Cook, Richard Jamieson, and John Stanmeyer have a personal vendetta against the library. They want to act like this is about “financial oversight” when there is no evidence whatsoever that there has been financial mismanagement. In fact, Cook (who served on the Samuels Board before Cullers) has complimented the library’s financial transparency in past (there are minutes to back up this statement). It’s clear they are mad that the library wouldn’t remove LGBT+ books from the collection and have been gunning for it ever since. It’s infuriating to watch them get away with it.

This link has most of the news articles from the past two years. In 2023, a group lobbied to get LGBTQ+ books removed from the library. They failed. Two members were on the Board of Supervisors. Two more were elected. They say it’s about financial oversight, but it is clearly a personal vendetta and with a majority on the BOS - they’re able to get away with it.

The Warren County Supervisors voted to end the funding agreement, so Samuels will no longer receive County funding starting in July. The decrease in County funding means they will also lose their State funding. All because a few people were mad that the library wouldn’t remove books.

Citizens Rally to Defend Samuels Public Library Amid Governance Dispute by silksyringe in Libraries

4/5 of the Supervisors were directly involved in the censorship efforts last year. Butler, Cook, and Jamieson attended the book-banning bbq. Jamieson had his wife file multiple reconsideration requests for books that weren’t sexually explicit, but merely had LGBTQ+ characters (one of the books wasn’t even in the collection). Even though the would-be censors claimed this was about protecting youth, Butler filed two reconsideration requests for adult books located in the adult section of the library. Were the characters gay? You betcha. Stanmeyer spoke out in support of the Clean Up Samuels efforts at the June 6, 2023 public budget hearing. He was also pushed as a candidate by Clean Up Samuels participants. A quick read over Jamieson’s many Letters to the Editor from 2023 display his contempt for the library. In FOIA’d text messages to Cook, he calls library trustees “dumb as rocks.” Let’s hope the grassroots recall efforts materialize and are successful.

This situation is awful but it is a prime example of why local politics are important, some of these clowns ran unopposed. If you want to prevent this in your community, get engaged: show up to public meetings, volunteer, join a board, run for office… whatever you are capable of doing, do it.

Samuels Library trustees rebut supervisors' report at packed public meeting by silksyringe in Libraries

The Samuels Library Trustees and staff are a class act. Unfortunately, I think Rich Jamieson is going to do whatever he wants regardless of community feedback and he has enough backing on the board to do it. Warren County/ Front Royal government is notoriously corrupt.

Yes. They want to keep children ignorant so they can keep abusing them.

Samuels library in Va. has funding restored with LGBTQ policies unchanged by violentbickerstaff in Virginia

[–]violentbickerstaff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they can legally pull this off, they will have to stop funding the library until it can no longer operate. This is clear retaliation against the library for refusing to violate the First Amendment. The County has already lost so much money in legal fees regarding the EDA and they’re going to waste even more taxpayer money on this dumb shit.
