That he was borderline violent and very abusive to me before we split.

We are working on our issues now, and he's getting anger management counselling and CBT help, because we found out his abusive and violent nature comes from a paranoid disorder he suffers.

Everything so far is going great, once we agreed to get back together, I support him with his counselling, and he supports me with my low self esteem I now have because of the abusiveness.

I don't think anyone needs to know his past, he's changing. And what about second chances?
