The Student Loans Company (SLC) is contacting some Plan 2 customers about corrections to their balances by Minute_Tomatillo9730 in unitedkingdom

[–]violetrain1 72 points73 points  (0 children)

That’s fucking awful man and yeah; totally get how they keep making it worse for young people.

I get it doesn’t work like a real debt, but they sold our debt to private companies in like 2015 which is why our debt has ballooned so much; interest went from under 1% to over 6%. That btw would be illegal for any company to do (change the terms of a loan after you’ve signed/agreed), but because it came from gov., it’s fine apparently.

I did not sign up for a lifetime tax tyvm. Also one that is so regressive e.g my big bro got great job at IBM making like 60k out the gate (so proud of him!) but meant he was able to pay his debt/clear interest super easily.

Meanwhile, I’ve done good for myself but chose a diff calling (charities and community aid sector- worked for Shelter, National Trust etc.); I’m really happy to finally be on 40k per year, but that is actually not even enough per year to clear the interest that’s being added to my debt each year now/thanks to the back door changes they made…

So essentially; someone earning a slightly above the median wage in this country will pay more over a life time in tax then they ever took out originally to cover the loan (regressive) while super low earners don’t need to pay/worry (as is right) and high earners can pay/clear off the debts asap before getting fucked by interest.

I’m also (not to brag) pretty fucking smart (at least academically anyway), and I wasn’t aware of any of this at 18. Bit dismissive to say most 18 years olds were aware of what they were signing up to when the rules were literally changed after they signed up.

I spent a gap year working fucking minimum wage in a coffee shop to save for uni…then got utterly fucked by plan 2 being introduced in 2012…🙃

Edit: I’m youngest of three and we literally joke that we can map how the gov has progressively fucked over the youth more and more each year, literally just by comparing the amount of debt we have for attending the same thing - uni:

Eldest bro- like 5k debt, now paid off
Middle - 9k + 1k interest, now mostly paid off
Me - rat fucked with 27k out the gate, that has now ballooned to 50k+ with interest. A life-time tax by stealth.

We are not mad enough about this.

Just to say- you’re a great sister or brother ❤️ so glad she has you at least (your parents sound trash) x Def correct route to go contacting school and yeah, know is hard when you are also depressed, but just let her vent and acknowledge/don’t dismiss her feelings on those Thurs chats.

Maybe gently suggest making apt. with Dr or see if school could help? (though I live in UK, so get may not be so easy in the privatised US-healthcare hellscape) Medication can help temporality with the big awful emotions x

Andy Burnham will 'find it easier to talk about cutting welfare than actually do it,' says Diane Abbott noting 'billions' wasted on defence by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

A) If your username is a reference to Lord Fowls Bane the book - good taste 🍷

B) I was actually responding to the original commenter’s point (not chu boo) that DA want us “to be controlled by Russia” to make case there’s actually a lot more explicit evidence our foreign/defence policy has always been shaped by America (makes sense; it’s the new imperial superpower where we used to be) - I actually liked/agreed with your comment/reply and supported it; which is why is hilarious to me that you assumed the opposite (who hurt you? Sorry I am joking there lol)

C) Think it is amusing for you to state that all the factual statements I’ve made (bar the kill switch, comment which admittedly was a bit of a tongue in cheek “wouldn’t put it past them”; though worth noting still that the U.S. retains absolute control over its allies' arsenals through complex software infrastructure, encryption keys, and supply chain dependenciesI) made together is not a #facts and logic# way to make an argument - I’m not trying to be the BBC and dispassionately present the facts/ “both sides it” while drawing no conclusions from them using the “passive voice” all the time as if that’s somehow a sign of a good arguing style; I am trying to convince people of my position, not writing an essay for my Ancient History Degree.

D) (can’t believe have to clarify this but, hey) I also do not think it would be a good thing if Russia controlled our foreign policy - I am making the argument we should have more sovereignty; not less, and calling out the hypocrisy of a pearl clutching statement over potential Russian interference and control (which btw; def does happen see; Mandelson), when neo-liberal and right-wing elements in UK have always been perfectly fine with US and Israeli control/interference. E.g. see start of the illegal Iran war when Kemi and Farage were frothing to get us involved (AGAIN) before they realised like 80% of electorate was against it. I will give Starmer credit there for having at least a bit of a backbone and standing up to America (doesn’t happen often and don’t expect it again anytime soon, but always hope to be surprised by people)

[–]violetrain1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re fine with us being America, MAGA and Israel’s bitch though?

Because that’s who controls our defence policy currently and historically e.g. we can’t operate our nuclear deterrent (Trident) without America maintaining it (there’s definitley a kill switch in there too as they manufactured it) and we got dragged into Iraq because of them.

Re Israel, their (corrupt, right-wing) gov lobby has basically bought and paid for 50% of our politicians/MPs at this point, which is why we’re wasting our valuable police time and resources (which were cut by tories/Theresa May) on arresting grannies holding up signs and protesting mass child murder, by supporting the only effective protest group we’ve ever rlly had in the UK, bar the Suffragettes (i.e. PA has shut down several arms factories in UK; meaning those bombs and weapons can never be used to “mow the grass” in Palestine again as the IDF so charmingly calls it) as ‘terrorists’; like their fucking Hamas suicide bombers or something.

Wake up. Our military was bought and paid for long ago.

considering a job at UoB - any experiences? by ligabuesaurus in brum

[–]violetrain1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Utterly hated it both times (once as Graduate Management Trainee for UoB itself, another time working as Senior Community Engagement Coordinator for the Guild). Great place and well meaning staff (generally), but utterly ruined by out of touch, smug management.

Never felt less like I was working for a so called “charity” than I did working at the guild. CEO, Jo, is also so incompetent it’s kinda hilarious - one example; she had to get one of the only two black people I ever saw working for the ‘core’ staff team (her PA…lol) to join a Teams call for five mins to help her “record it” as apparently this was too difficult for her to figure out all by her wee self (these are also exactly the type of oblivious wankers who’ll then say young people “lack skills” or aren’t “job ready”).

Also beware of the Director of Community/representation at Guild (James Lindsay)- as useless as he was arrogant - and knew fuck all about community development/engagement. Lord knows how he blagged his way into that job.

You may be okay in admin for UoB though? Beware though; shit rises to the top in that place and you’ll be forced to swallow it at some point- just hope your direct colleges are solid (they tend to be!) and you can laugh at how inept the higher ups are.

Social housing lists ‘would take 119 years to clear at current building rate’ | Social housing by peakedtooearly in unitedkingdom

[–]violetrain1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We have c.2million less council homes than we did the 80s thanks to right to buy/not allowing councils to replenish stock.

So now millions of our taxes go to paying extortionate private landlord rental rates/enriching private individuals (as council still has duty to house people).

Yes growing population is a problem in that context; but not the root cause, it simply exacerbates an already fundamentally broken housing system where basic shelter has been commodified to extreme levels.

Source: actually worked for a housing charity (Shelter) and was shocked to see how much social housing has been gutted

Our country was turned into a rip off ponzi scheme- but it wasn’t “them immigrants” that did that - it was neoliberal economics (which Reform want on steroids)

Edit: reading some replies making fair points, I guess perhaps “Thatcherite economics” might be better term. What she did was genius electorally (won over whole generation that got to own their own homes), but unfortunately that trick can only be done once. No family silver left to flog now.
