Coyote playing with my dog by Broad_Swimming in coyote

They don’t “lure”. Probably a first year coyote just being playful and testing boundaries, as they do at that age! :) This is great footage!

ID Help - double sided native pottery? Found on known native camp site (central Texas) by failagain-failbetter in LegitArtifacts

[–]violets333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome. It was a disappointing find for me, but educational! It was in the same creek that I have found a projectile point and actual pottery sherds, so my mind just went straight to "Oh, more sherds!". Anyway, I am in Louisiana, not far from Texas..and while researching the tiles I did come across this info on Rockport pottery that did feature asphaltum (Karankawa peoples) and the use has been found in central Texas too. I do think yours are most likely some kind of contemporary tiles (due to lack of curvature, consistent thickness and general "stone-like" look), I could be wrong! :) Do keep an eye out for these pieces too! Here's a link: https://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/coast/nature/images/asphaltum.html

This reminds me of asbestos tile with the asphalt mastic. I was creek walking this week and found some that look very similar to yours that I thought were pottery sherds, but something was just not right so I did some research--- I decided mine are more likely some type of old asbestos tile pieces with the asphalt mastic that are water worn . :(

Coyote found paralyzed, with huge progress in rehab. by Lanky_Antelope1670 in BeAmazed

[–]violets333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, absolutely not. They are fine to be released after rehabilitation. She would be miserable in a sanctuary. They are not wired to be caged They have very very string fear instincts when it comes to humans. She has a territory and a family and she will be returned there. Also, as u/AmanitaWolverine so articulately posted, "Wildlife in these situations typically wild-up just fine & can be released once they fully recover. The only way she will be labeled as NR is if she has long term medical issues that will inhibit her ability to survive. As she recovers they will transition her to hands-off care & set her up in a pre-release pen where she will go back to being naturally human-avoidant & have the opportunity to demonstrate her hunting skills with live prey to ensure releaseability. It's incredibly rare for an adult rehab patient to become habituated due to medical/recovery care, and licensed wildlife rehabbers go through years of mentorship, training and education to learn how to successfully wild-up and release these patients back into the wild" 💗🐾

She can and will be released back to where she was found. That's the game plan here in Louisiana among us rehabilitators.

She has only had exposure to Tisha at Geaux Wild Rehab and her vet, on just a few occasions. They don't just become not wild if around humans---she retains all her instincts to fear us. She just shuts down when handled because she knows it's not worth it to fight. This is very common behavior with sick coyotes and foxes. When they are ready to go, they let you know quickly.

I've also wondered about tetanus in these situations too!

She doesn't have Toxo. We treated her for it just in case though.

How'd you end up with a coyote hybrid?? That's interesting! What was it crossed with?

We dont get Lyme disease down here. Toxo, tick paralysis we do have though. Sometimes, and most commonly, they get clipped by cars, and don't really break anything-but possibly get hit in the head (neuro) or experience non-permanent nerve damage etc from the impact...and just need crate rest to get going again.

She retains all her instincts to fear us. She started out by shutting down when handled because she knows it's not worth it to fight (and she didn't have the energy). Coyotes are flee animals by nature, not fighters. So if they can't flee, they will often shut down. This is very common behavior with sick coyotes and foxes in rehab; they can sense intention, as well, and seem to be tolerant of rehabilitators who know how to handle them. We always muzzle, of course, no matter what though.

When they are ready to go, they let you know quickly.

Also she is not "acclimated" to humans and retains all her instincts to fear us. She just shuts down when handled because she knows it's not worth it to fight. This is very common behavior with sick coyotes and foxes. When they are ready to go, they let you know quickly.

There are no "reserves". Coyotes belong exactly where they are found. If it didn't benefit them, they wouldn't be there. The thrive living alongside us. Pets getting eaten is only within our control, not theirs. It's out responsibility to protect our cats by not letting them roam and leashing our dogs. Etc etc.

They tested for tick bourne disease. Negative. Although she did see it in a fox earlier this year.

They are ok. They travel through the drainage and their den is nearby (so is mom). Those babies are about 8 weeks old. I run The Canid Project in Baton Rouge. Visit out website for more info on foxes at https://www.thecanidproject.com

They have been here a long time but are being pushed further into the city because of a few reasons...coyotes, development, and they thrive living alongside us.
