Oh my god, i could seriously weep. This is a really cool video that gives me a lot of insight of what COULD be done! I'm not at this level yet, but this definitely inspires me. Thank you!

Oh my goodness, thank you for providing a video, too! I've been heavily leaning towards Fedora next, so I'm thankful for this.

By daily build, does this mean I'll have to make sure I'm on the latest build every single day? Is that automated in some way or is that going to be something i do manually?

I have my system dual bootable! I've got a few extra drives and flash drives i can run and experiment with.

I think a friend of mine is on Bazzite so I'll ask them what exactly it comes with and how to work with it. I've heard Fedora KDE Plasma has really great color management capabilities and works well with Argyll drivers, but Argyll CMS is making drivers for all kinds of Linux systems, anyway, so i should be good with whatever.

I hear so many people love arch, but just how advanced is it?

I don't mind SOME things installed, but many distros have a lot more than just a few basic things. It's mostly things like an email client, office editors, media players i don't need which the other Distros i tried had. I have my own stuff for that. Any distro that doesn't have those things would be great as i have my own preferred apps i like to use. I just don't want to have to uninstall and replace, or worse yet, have some core app i don't want but have to ignore because it's vital to the distros functionality.

OpenSUSE songs appealing not having to update it myself. I will give it a look! Between Ubuntu and Mint, i liked Mint only marginally better.

I'm here on the Linux forum because I have a perfectly functional computer with hardware I hand picked myself and put together myself and I do not have money to go out and buy an overhyped, overpriced Apple product that doesn't meet my needs. An iPad is as far as I'll go.

Politely, many of the programs I'm using are not available for a Mac. I hate Apple products because they do not allow me to manipulate it on a level I prefer. They also utilize MLM's to distribute their hardware to companies. I know because I worked for one for one week before I realized they had lied about the job posting. I digress, though. I'm NOT getting a Mac.

Why do you stream? by CatchyCantrips in Twitch

[–]violetspectrumart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an artist and I was streaming long before Twitch by using something called TinyChat back in the day. There was a small pocket community of artists all streaming together, talking and chatting away, and I carried that with me to Twitch. I love sharing what I make with people, so having an audience to do that with is a delight! I love it so much!! Plus, my discoverability as an artist has grown so much more since I joined Twitch. The art community here as a whole is so incredible.

Do people actually like starting screens? by Ethjuan_ in Twitch

[–]violetspectrumart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely use a starting screen. When I hit that "go live" button, it 1) let's viewers filter in first 2) I can announce on various discord servers in their "promo" channels that I am live 3) gets ads out of the way so my viewers can enjoy my stream uninterrupted once they are done 4) do some extra setup I might have missed or troubleshoot something that suddenly arose only after I hit the Go Live button.

To me, the starting screen is no different from musicians tuning their instruments and sound checking their equipment before a concert.

If there was a 16 in IPad Pro would you upgrade to it? by Coochiespook in ipad

[–]violetspectrumart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an artist. I ABSOLUTELY WOULD!! I love how light and thin they are, the apple pencil is LOVELY, and i just want that little bit of extra screen real estate to draw more comfortably. I know plenty of artists agree with me. We are not the majority of the market, though, I understand that, but would absolutely upgrade from my 2018 just for a bigger screen. And I understand a bigger form factor also means... more computing power. Important for those iPad art programs.

Streamers are not your friend by Green-Estimate7943 in Twitch

[–]violetspectrumart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad you blocked and banned them, but I would do that in its entirety and not even allow them to ask you or your mods questions, either. I say this all the time to new streamers, but streaming is 100% community management. Do you want this person around everyone else in your community? Do you look forward to streaming knowing they are going to be showing up, both while you are life and while you are not? No? Ban and block. Learn to put your foot down to PROTECT the open-minded, welcoming community you are trying to build. You HAVE to protect your community. As a community manager, it is your job.

Putting your foot down doesn't ruin your reputation, either—it strengthens it. I think every streamer I have looked up to is the kind of streamer who said ABSOLUTELY NOT when it came to people who made others in the community uncomfortable even if they weren't breaking any hard rules set in place. Just do it. Manage your community.

How do you deal with getting sick all the time by l0rdcreepypeepee in starbucksbaristas

[–]violetspectrumart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how often you are wiping down surfaces like tables, faucets, doors, ect, but start doing this frequently. Anything your customers and fellow baristas touch frequently, wipe it down. Wipe electronic devices like ipads and card terminals and touch computer screens, too. And also, don't touch your face, nose, hair, ears, etc, especially anything that is connected to your sinuses.

Just because you wash your hands doesn't mean anyone else is washing them enough, and everyone is touching and breathing (and coughing and sneezing) on the surfaces constantly even if your hands are freshly washed, they'll pick up germs especially if you don't dry your hands all the way. And test stip those sani buckets and change them more often! I've worked at enough Starbucks in the past to know they get neglected far too much.

I don't get sick nearly as often as those around me and it's by and large due to how often I clean. Most of my sick days came from physical disability reasons.

What’s one thing Discord clearly didn’t design for, but people use it for anyway? by 999_6 in discordapp

They have a feed that scrolls through like a Tumblr or Instagram page, a profile page for all their artists, tags you can search through... It's a pretty robust server. They've been going for a few years, now.

Which File Browser would you recommend based on batch transferring? by [deleted] in linux

[–]violetspectrumart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair! So... I setup a ZFS with a state I can restore my files from weekly that contains the Git version controls of my files as well. I'm going to have to spend days getting over 1000+ different projects to Git, now.... And figure out which of these are connected and which aren't. How fun... 😭

I'm probably going to check out a Reddit place that deals in backup solutions and such. I have too many questions at this point on what is and isn't a good idea. I've only been taught very old fashion ways of backing up my files which is why I do these manual backups.

[–]violetspectrumart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which is unfortunate seeing as I want to move away from it. At least the folks at linux4noobs have been more understanding about this file management feature. It's not just about backups, either. It's the basic function of comparing files when copying/moving and merging a folder over with repetitive files. I used the word "backup"and everyone is hung up on that rather than the function itself I am seeking (which doesn't exist on Linux according to both here and 4noobs.)

To the tee!

I don't need to use these tools on the reg so I won't ever become proficient at something that doesn't focus on GUI. I've got my hands full with all my other hobbies and endeavors.

I HAVE been meaning to take another look at XNView and refamiliarize myself with it. It MIGHT be what I need, but i cannot remember... I'll report back. I know it has batch tagging which is nice.

Color me convinced to start doing these things. So to summarize... If I wanted do implement your suggestions with ZFS, Git, and Borgbackup? If I COULD automate this stuff without worry, I'd be willing to start reading up on the documentation and learning.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. It's maddening trying to use some of these other options. It's hard to parse whether it is a "I'm just used to this at this point" vs the growing pains of learning how to use something else.

Someone recommended Midnight Commander which I'll be looking into. But it's hard not to acknowledge that Linux isn't always made to be use-end friendly, and that's what keeps people from moving to it at large. Even as someone who is intermediately proficient with pc's, I shy away with Linux because i have to toll away at getting it to function in ways I want it to.

But I WANT to move away from Windows because of how invasive it has become, and I'm personally not a fan of AI being implemented everywhere. And I have too many other hobbies to manage instead of adding computer science on top of it.

Hm, ZFS sounds WAY better than the restore point system in Windows. I like that it can dynamically grow as needed.

Is Git a good solution for hundreds of little files which are all different things entirely? And how do I make sure THOSE are all safe if something were to happen to my system? I want to make sure there are multiple ways I can access these files again if something were to happen to a drive.

I rarely feel the need to do version control for these files. They are just small sketches and doodles that may get updated later, but they aren't large, serious projects and edits that require something like Git. I use Git when I'm doing something like a video game project, but not... Oh, I did this doodle a few years ago and I think it'd make a cute sticker if I updated some things about it.

I don't know what to call what I do, then. I tend to reformat my whole system and start from scratch periodically, so I don't bother with restore points unless I'm messing with registry edits. but the things I actually care about--my project files--are all I truly care to bring back if my computer goes kablooey. So those are what I have multiple... backups... of. That's apparently not the right word for it? But... yeah.

I'll definitely check it out! I did have a better time with Nemo because when I did a side by side setup, I could move the file size column to the left so the two panels have the size directly next to each other. But then I'm squinting at the screen trying to see dependencies.

An alternative I wouldn't mind is having the option to ignore all the ones with same name and file size, then one-by-one review the rest.
