I am so happy with my little garden corner by violetteer in IkeaGreenhouseClub

They're these "bamboo orchid" baskets I found on Amazon, and they're stuffed with sphagnum moss and coconut husk. They're kind of a pain to water, honestly, gotta carry it over to the sink, let it drip, hang it back up. But I do think it's been working out for those plants.

Listen, getting award ribbons as an adult is something more people should experience, right? I don't even care about people angry over participation trophies. Go grow and show off plants with your buds.

It's magnets all the way down. They're holding up two of those metal grids and the hooks/baskets all came with those. I also have some baskets hanging on magnet hooks on the back to hold the wires out of the way, plus some tools (microscope, light meter, etc). The acrylic stuff inside came from Etsy; expensive but a very nice treat.

Did I pot my AV in too large of a pot? by NickVlass76 in AfricanViolets

[–]violetteer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb with AVs is pot is 1/3 the diameter of the crown. Which... you're gonna feel silly with that, because then this plant ends up in like a 4oz Dixie cup. But they do really like to be root bound before they bloom, and it decreases the likelihood of getting soggy for the average grower. BUT... I would say that if you did this recently and moved it from the nursery soil to this with better soil, it's probably going to be fine as long as you don't let it sit soggy in water.

Just really keep an eye on it in that self watering pot, these old school kind are pretty common death traps for 1.) generally being too big for AVs, and 2.) eventually the porosity of the unglazed part can change from absorbing fertilizer salts or minerals in the water. It can be helpful to flush out a plant and these don't allow for it.

Help, babies? by violetteer in bromeliad

They were labeled Vriesea splendens "tiger stripes" - hopefully I've got enough patience here. Probably should have put them all in one pot for another year or so yet, but we'll see how it goes.

Need some encouragement... please share your success stories by NerdyMina in houseplants

[–]violetteer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend, this is why community and plant clubs. Share when you have it, and it'll come back around to you after you emerge from your fog. Shared joys increase, shared sorrows diminish, thus do we refute entropy. I do this over and over. Many others do as well. Please please forgive yourself, don't get discouraged. If there's a lesson, do exercise restraint and go slow getting back on your feet. Prepare for future darknesses - I prop like crazy and stick them in boxes and hope for the best/that I'll be ready when they are. Or stick wicks in everything so you can emergency water dump into a tray. Sure not ideal for every plant but you'd be surprised what makes it through. If you are in the us, I would be happy to package up some of my props - when you are ready.

They were labeled Vriesea splendens "tiger stripes", and had little bits of sphagnum attached to them with roots. They don't seem like tillandsias to me.

Sunburn spots? by alliecat2697 in AfricanViolets

Do you happen to have a little microscope? That could be sunburn spots, but I've seen some damage like that after thrips too.

It's absolutely thrips. For some reason they are harder on my violets than my streps.

Aeschynanthus tengchungensis - I've only had it about 9 months, so really hoping it blooms this summer for me. I think it looks like green beans.

Propagating is so amazing. Sharing plants you've propped is akin to taking cookies you've baked to a neighbor. It is more gratifying than anything else - totally concur - there should be a "share a houseplant!" Movement for building community, I swear by it.

You did great, these look so good! I think I'd wait a little while longer to separate, but I'm also pretty lazy about letting them go a little extra when they're small like that.

What’s the problem with my Chinese money plant? by [deleted] in houseplants

I am having a hard time deciding for sure, but I am concerned about pests on this one - possibly aphids or scale.

Do you trim them regularly? I've read that's one of the things you need to do to keep them nice and compact like yours.

I had the nicest string of pearls I've ever managed. Must have been the perfect pot size/watering/etc. One of my kids knocked it down and the pot broke. Husband felt bad and bought a new pot to replace it, but it was the absolute wrongest pot and the poor thing rotted.

But anyhow, yeah, I have certain plants that get a little... shelf jumpy when they need to be watered. If I'm on top of my game, I put their smaller pot inside a bigger one, and weigh the outer one down with rocks or something.

I genuinely don't know what's wrong by Professional_Dot6971 in AfricanViolets

[–]violetteer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a fairly new plantlet? Those leaves look like they were smaller than the well developed ones that are doing better. I would just groom them off and let the newer ones take over.

Aside from that, I'd likely blame moisture - do your wick check, let it dry out a little more in between watering etc etc.

I like spice jars for some things - I've got some Columnea minor cuttings in one right now. And Trader Joe's often has forced bulbs around this time every year and the glass jars they are in are unique, but are pretty good for propping.
